you rely on it for basic stuff. But it also enables us to organize and share information so rapidly like never thought possible before.

but.... people nowadays aren’t learning the skills on how to live WITHOUT the technology. So if it’s ever not there.......

And that's why solar mass ejections are such a threat. Wipe out the satellites for a couple of weeks and anarchy ensues.

I know some of the focus with the issue on a state government level with the Texas situation. And rightfully so. Texans have the right to deal with their government how they feel they should.

But when it comes to situations like this. Shows how important local community based organizing is. In your town or county or whatever.

my town. I am a member of the outreach group. We gather donations or furniture, clothing, canned goods, etc. also help elderly or disabled with rides to and fro places from volunteers.

I do want I can. I donate what I can when I can. Have given some rides to people when I could.

Little things like that on a local level can go a long way. Especially situations like Texas right now.

We were uniquely equipped for the storm. We live full-time in a (well-insulated) motorhome and tow a 4x4 pickup behind it. That motorhome makes us self-contained. We've got a big genset and were able to make electricity if we'd needed it. However, we are currently parked near some essential city/county operations and that proximity probably helped us to avoid power interruptions. We lost water a week ago, but our big fresh water tank kept us going--with some pretty stringent conserving. Our pickup did fine in the conditions and helped us scout around for the supplies we needed. We never used the option, but we could have quit the area and relocated to Florida or Arizona in the days before the storm arrived. Next time, we might just do that.

We didn't adopt this lifestyle for its emergency-conditions survival capabilities, but we did better than many. Count us grateful.

Lol, yeah, it was almost 80 in Dallas a few days ago and last night we had major storms and flash flooding. Place is a mess, north texas is bipolar when it comes to weather.

Went from fires started by candles and fireplaces to fires started by lightning all within a week. We had frozen precipitation last night but in the form of hail, lol.

Grew up in Upstate NY in the Adirondacks. Snowed constantly but that was not bad. It was the ice storms that were worse. Getting the ice of the driveway was hard work especially since it was a long one. Don't have to worry about that now. Moved to Northern CA and there is no snow but if I want it I can drive to it. Stay save everybody.

Measured my ice cycles with a retractable measuring stick longest one was 8'7" and the ice that slid off my roof was over 5" thick

In Texas? I assume you had an ice dam, where the melting snow hit the gutters, froze and backed up onto the roof.

Glad nobody was hurt. Yeah been getting some serious melt going on here too. Sounded like the whole roof was coming down the other day. Just hearing the ice melt off and fall.

Thankfully it feels like spring is right around the corner

I just got my truck out of the dealer service shop. The bitter cold in OKC ruined all my parking sensors, blind spot sensor, froze and broke the lines to washer fluid dispenser. Not to mention little electrical glitches here and there. I get home and the parking sensors are still not right :thumbdown:

The NG industry in Texas dropped the ball in not getting all of it's players, that rely on electricity to operate, to get signed up on the TDUs, (like Oncor), on their "Critical Infrastructure" List, so that if and when rolling blackouts or other electrical outages are forced, that these players are not left with out power.

An example of such NG players are: NG power stations, Texas NG compressing stations, and Texas NG refiners. Many well heads are heated by electricity, instead of NG, because, for the environment, electricity heat is cleaner than NG. Which is another way to say, that to save the environment, we almost lost the Power Grid, and if that had happened, the disruption of many things could have caused the death of thousands...
