Don't they still have Cooper Rush the red headed guy after the Giants or whoever cut him?

Right now, I'm of a mind that it's likely Garrett Gilbert. That's unless someone else enters the picture between now and the 2021 preseason. Most of the veteran QBs with decent experience are likely to cost more than our FO would be willing to pay. Barring a ligit surprise, I seriously feel it'll be GG.

If it's Alex Smith then you better make sure you address the third stringer, too. Cause I wouldn't trust that guy to make it through a single game, let alone a chunk of the season.

I thought Gilbert looked decent - for a backup - in that one game. But that's one game, and he has been out of college 7-8 years and has struggled to even stay on a practice squad. That doesn't make me very comfortable.

I don't think the backup is on the team right now, but I would be happy with Gilbert as the 3rd teamer. The team might opt for a developmental guy as the #3 though.

Alex Smith is washed, injured, and only throws checkdowns. idk why people want him in any capacity.
good dude.
solid leader.
tough as hell.
better than avg QB which is all you need in your back-up.
why the hell not.

Gilbert > Smith...for the sake of watchability. Draft a QB to compete with Gilbert n Nooch, and hope Dak stays healthy.

36 yr old qb with bum legs, can't stay healthy, and already has a noodle arm.

Oh but hey hes a good dude who can take a hit(maybe) and complete a checkdown

I feel that the club will stay with Gale Gilbert for the time being, he was impressive enough in one sole game vs a reputably good Steelers defense
and that was considering he didn't have much learning time with this Moore offense.

Alex Smith has vast more game experience, and did he play under OC McCarthy during the Niners dayz ?
but yet why is he still out there on the streets, when having vet back up QBs has become so invaluable ?

what is his current health status ? ..has he become a health risk ? ..what about his mobility and movement ?
He's always been a very careful, game managing bus driver that makes minimal mistakes and turnovers but he also takes too many
hold- ball- too -long ,unnecessary sacks and he doesn't always get the ball out quickly, and he
maybe losing some in his velocity.

You should look to finish in the playoffs or in the top 6 or so draft picks. Quality backup quarterbacks usually get you to the middle.

Mullens would be my 1st choice followed by Winston. Theres actually a whole list id rather Have then wasting my time on a 36 yr old broken qb who might not even be healthy enough to play when asked.
If Smith was our top option I'd rather keep Gilbert whose already on the team.

Perhaps a one game sample = aberration.
His previous 6 years in the NFL, Gilbert has appeared in 6 games - attempting 6 passes, completing 2. Probably 95% of his in-season league time has been on practice squads. This QB turns 30 on July 1st. If he truly has it in him to be a very late bloomer, let Gilbert prove it this spring & summer competing against at least two guys with legitimate backgroundsor resumes´- one a seasoned veteran, the other a draft prospect rated 4th or 5th round worthy.
Cooper Rush & Ben DiNucci are 7th round picks, Gilbert a 6th round selection. Why not upgrade the group that is competing to be the Cowboys backup have QBs graded higher than the tail end of the draft (or an UDFA?)
