Just about everyone in and around the NFL believes that quarterbacks will be selected with each of the first three picks of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Which means, for all intents and purposes, the draft begins at the No. 4 overall pick, which belongs to the Atlanta Falcons. Not many people seem to have a handle on what new general manager Terry Fontenot is going to do with the pick. The Falcons can go in a number of different directions based on how Fontenot and new coach Arthur Smith feel about the quality of the roster.

One option that has gone somewhat overlooked is the Falcons also taking a quarterback at that spot. Because the Falcons restructured Matt Ryan's contract earlier this offseason and it would be damaging to release or trade him anytime in the next two years, it has seemed like the Falcons would prefer to either trade down (with another team coming up to take their preferred quarterback) or stand pat take a non-QB (such as Oregon tackle Penei Sewell or Florida tight end Kyle Pitts) at No. 4. But Ryan is set to turn 36 years old next month, and the Falcons may not get another chance to find a successor this high up in the draft.

Most of the Falcons talk does not involve taking a QB, but I can see them wanting to be in the game if it offers them more picks.
Part of the issue is that the Fals have decent OTs, and they have a good enough TE. The better OL fit would be a guard. So dangling Trey Lance out there
for someone like the Pats isn't stupid either.

I still feel that the Falcons ultimately want to leverage a quarterback to another team to trade down. My bet would be on Denver.

There is an in house fight going on with their new HC & GM, one wants to look to the future, the other wants to add to the roster now. Reportedly, they are now on the same page. We will see who wins, but it's very possible the Falcons go QB. This doesn't mean Pitts falls to us in any way as every team wants him.

People on the NFL Network like Daniel Jeremiah, Scott Pioli, Charley Casserly, etc. are almost all predicting a QB at 4 for Atl. I’m still not sure because I think they will be tempted with one or more trade offers that will be too good to pass up for a team that needs considerable rebuilding.

With not only a new head coach, but also a new GM, I expect them to make the patient move... which could be either of taking a guy like Lance to sit for a couple of years behind Ryan, or take a lucrative trade offer that will offer them multiple high picks in this and future drafts. Either way the payoff is bigger than one (non-QB) player, if you can just wait for the results.

They’ll either have a future franchise caliber QB or they’ll have a future draft bonanza... both of which will better serve the new coach and GM because they’ll have the time.

No, he won’t slide to 10. I almost never speak in absolutes with the NFL Draft... but Pitts will go before reaching 10.

If Dallas wants him that badly, they’ll have to move up to get him.
Would not pay to trade up
Need our picks for defense

If I’m Atlanta I send all the smoke signals about drafting a QB at 4. That’s how you get the best trade offers. The next 2 teams aren’t going to draft a QB so you have to build the demand.

I think it might be wise for the Falcons to get a qb. They may never be up this high again. They can draft a qb and let him sit for a year or two to learn ( like Mahomes and Brady) and they will have him for 5 years.

Agreed.

And if for whatever reason the Falcons don’t take Pitts at #4, it makes too much sense for the Bengals to grab him to pair with Burrow.

They should kick every stone.
You hope to not be drafting that high often, so the seize the day if he's deemed worthy.

Pitts will be a instant millionaire at age 20 lol, so dont feel sorry for him, but would be a drag to wind up in cin ohio?
If he is southern boy, playing on a northern team, he wont do as well.
Cin is a passing team though, he would get all the targets he might want. I think they threw 65 times in one game last year?

which one is future?
I think if I were the HC I might want the QB.
At least there was an argument ! here with cowboys, no arguments from the puppet HC ! :p

Pitts is originally from Philadelphia, so Ohio will border his home state of Pennsylvania.

he should be good anywhere then.
I wonder if these players have teams they hope dont pick them, and teams they hope do pick them.
Or they dont care much, and just want to be drafted high as possible so their pay is better.

you never hear about any of that.
guess the dont wants would not be smart to say, but better that than be drafted by them.

I think dak was mad back when he went in 4th round, because he thought he would go much higher, and make more money.
But that I think motivated him to prove he was better than people thought, and he got a break with tony's injury, and he did make the most of that.
