What Dallas does in the 1st round will be debated and debated no matter the pick from who the pick is to why did they stay put or why they moved down or up for that matter. We have a number of mocks that show us who they could take in later rounds but why those guys.

I decided to research what McCarthy and Quinn like in players at different positions to try to get a take on them and what I found especially with Quinn is SPARQ scores seem to be important as well as certain sizes at the position. Used McCarthy draft picks from Green Bay and Quinn's picks from Seattle through Atlanta. These are in no particular order or projected in any round other in what the analyst believe that this or that guy will not get past a particular round which we all know always changes. So here goes.

Alim McNeil DT North Carolina St. - very active DT, high ceiling, one of the top 5 SPARQ scores for DTs, mostly a 1 tech guy that can play 3 tech also, always give effort on every play to the whistle, excellent run stopper, leader type, 6'2 and 320, fits Quinn type of interior DL. I see him in the 3rd.

Marvin Wilson DT Florida St - had an off year in 2020 but considered to once have been a solid 1st round choice, great size at 6'4 and 305, can play 1 tech, 3 tech or 5 tech which Quinn will use to certain situations, SPARQ score was in top 5, great use of hands and good strength although was out of shape most of last year, can stop the run very effectively and get to the QB. I see him 3rd or 4th.

Walker Little OT Stanford - has all the tools, quickness, strength, set ability, excellent ability to the second level on run blocking, again a guy that scored high on the SPARQ even above those projected in the 1st round, was considered a 1st round guy if he hadn't been injuried the end of 2019 and opted out of 2020, reports that he is in great shape, 6'7" and 315 built like Tyrone Smith, an offensive line leader. I see him in 2nd through 4th guy.

Tyson Campbell CB Georgia - at 6'2 and 185 he is the prototypical guy that Quinn looks for in his DBs, long arms, good hips, plays a great cover 3 on the outside, top five SPARQ score, extremely quick and physical, good size hands. See him in 2nd or 3rd or could fall into 4th depending on runs of other positions.

Xavier Campbell DE Clemson - high SPARQ score maybe highest among DE in the draft which he is not but worth mentioning as apparently he is deciding whether to enter the supplemental draft, not the tallest DE at 6'2 and 270 but extremely quick, great hands, gets to the QB, and plays the run extremely well, hardly ever gets washed out of plays, someone to watch

Andre Cisco S Syracuse - another high SPARQ guy that seems more of a SS type than FS type, great at run stopping and knowing gadget plays, great hands, can be the take them out quickly with hits guy and at 6'1 and 205 delivers blows that makes a wideout or running back think twice. Probably a 3rd or 4th or 5th round guy, has a high ceiling but needs work.

Jabril Cox LB LSU - great speed, great run stopper, can cover the TE well, very instinctive guy at 6'3 and 230, can also play the position that Neal will play, needs good DL in front of him to be more effective, top 10 SPARQ scores, very active, takes a leadership role on defense. See him in 2nd but if drops to 3rd I would go up and get him.

Baron Browning LB Ohio State - at 6'3 and 245, he can play almost anywhere on defense, high SPARQ scores for a LB, ability to cover well, stop the run well, great at taking on blockers and shedding them, good blitzes, see the field well, more of a will or sam lb. Seen him anywhere from 2nd to 5th although probably in 3rd round late.

Tamorrion Terry WR Florida St - scored good on SPARQ, okay route runner, great speed, great hands, very competitive for a WR, has the size, speed and hands that McCarty covets, homerun threat on every play. At 6'3 and 210, a great WR2 or WR3 guy. Due to problems at Florida St with coaches could see him going as late as the 6th round where I think he would be a huge steal.

Other DBs that more fit Quinn's scheme are Caleb Farley CB, Trevon Moehrig S, Ifeatu Melifonwu CB/S, Richie Grant S, Paulson Adebo CB, Caden Sterns S.

Other DL guys that fit Quinn's scheme are Payton Turner DE, Elerson Smith DE, Joseph Ossai DE, Charles Snowden DE/LEO, Tommy Togiai DT

Other LB guys that fit Quinn's scheme are Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (probably top 20 pick), Chazz Surratt.

I still believe that Surtain or Horn will be the pick at 10 but not knowing who falls to 10 really could change things.

My favorite 2nd round guy is the speedy linebacker from Kentucky, Jamin Davis.
3rd round: LA Tech DT Milton Davis
4th round: A&M DT Bobby Brown & Notre Dame TE Tommy Tremble

I think this is another draft we neglect the safety position and run with our signees, we'll see. If so, I hope we add bodies to the defensive line.

The second and third days of the draft are where the perspective scouting departments of each team earn their bread and butter.
in other words, it's where we learn which teams have the better scouting departments.

@Sandyf Great post. Thanks for taking the time to look at it from the SPARQ/coach tendency angle. I have looked into this draft more than any other. Because of that, I appreciate anyone who has done some homework and their take on some of the prospective draftees. Thanks again.

You only listed one OT on there, but there are several who may be just as good as the big two, but less pub on them. That is who the Cowboys should target instead if OT is a concern to them. May even turn out to be better, who knows.

Interesting that Wilson, Little and Jaylon Waddle went to the same private school in TX. Waddle was the lowest ranked of all three. They had a pretty good high school team.

Tremble is really interesting to me. If we are looking for culture changers he could be a nice mid round pick. Not great production receiving but looks to be a good athlete. But if we want to go back pounding people in the run game, that is he shines. We probably need to upgrade of offensive line too, but he is an interesting name. Fourth round may be too late for him though.

Remember that Larry Allen was the 49th pick in the 1994 draft and the 10th offensive linemen selected. So crazy things can happen. And you can uncover gold nuggets. Like it was said above, this is where the scouting department earns their bread, and shows who belongs.

Unfortunately because the FO has let this team get so far in the hole, even a couple good picks in this draft is still like putting a bandaid on a hemorrhage. For the last 25 years the Cowboys have been behind the curve in fixing this defense and are always reactionary instead of proactive.

We’ll sprinkle in a few good picks with the rest of the underachievers, say how great the pick was and still keep on finishing 8-8........only to look forward to fixing things yet again in the next draft.

I’m not one to hammer the Jones regime but sadly the sucking will continue until this pestilence is no more

The most important picks in the draft come after the first round
That’s where you build your team
That one pick in the first gets the most attention but from a roster perspective it’s a small part of your draft class
Great scouting in the 2-7 rounds is the real key to success

Thanks for all the effort you put into this post. It will be interesting to see if we select any of these guys in the draft.

Remember that Larry Allen was the 49th pick in the 1994 draft and the 10th offensive linemen selected. So crazy things can happen. And you can uncover gold nuggets. Like it was said above, this is where the scouting department earns their bread, and shows who belongs.

This year might be especially true.
