I don't completely agree. Yes, coaches are often looking for a certain type of player, but a lot of coaches have done terrible jobs when allowed to pick their players. Marinelli, based on his time as a head coach in Detroit, should have never been allowed to influence a draft pick.

I haven't gone through Quinn's drafts to see how Atlanta did while he was head coach (or how much influence he had), but if you have a department that spends the whole year evaluating players. Trust them to do their job. If they say Surtain should be selected, then I'd lean toward taking Surtain unless the coaches ask if he can do something they need from the position and the answer is no.

I don't think so. Everybody, even personnel guys, need time to learn. If we wanted our Personnel guys to go out and draft players to fit Marinelli's scheme, I think they could do that. But I don't expect them to be experts on a scheme they've never run.

That doesn't make any sense at all. But it doesn't matter, since McClay has been associated with the Cowboys, the team has made what, like three first round DB picks? So, Jenkins, Clayborne and Jones? Which of those three picks has established our Personnel/Scouting guys as more knowledgeable or even good at identifying DB talent for us?

See where I'm going here?

This is what I hate most about this franchise. Let’s draft press corners in play zone. There’s no rhyme or reason to what the hell we do

I'm pretty sure McClay was only over personnel when we drafted Jones. However, we don't know how much coaches might have even influenced that pick. I'm of the mind that you hire personnel guys to study personnel. You hire coaches to use that personnel. The coaches should have a say in what they are looking for and the personnel guys should find the best fit for it. If it comes down to a difference in opinions, you trust the guys whose job it is to study these players and identify the best one. If they aren't good at the job, then you look for someone who is.

Coaches can be great at their job while still being bad at identifying talents. Personnel guys' job is to be good at identifying talent.

We'll be playing press with a single-high primarily. Marinelli was a two-deep believer, Quinn runs more Cover-1 and Cover-3 with "press ball" technique..

Horn on the 1st Gowan in the late 3rd.
Molden in the 3rd to play Safety.
Cosmi in the 2nd.
Deonte Brown in the 4th
What ever LB falls in the 4th
might be Cox or Browning

This is kind of a line ball. As a rule you go with the scouts but the defensive co-ordinator is Horns coach’s best mate. Assuming it’s not helping out a mate, he’s got a lot of information on this kid that even scouts might not.

He sounded like it was Coaches vs Scouts, sounds like another Watt/Taco situation with the scouts liking Surtain.

I cringe @ the idea of this coaching staff having any input on draft picks. Just shut up and coach.

Starting to get the vibe McCarthy is nothing but a Green Bay mole to keep sabotaging us.

Coaches want Horn. Scouts want Surtain.

the Defensive coaches choice should break a tie, i know its unpopular given some bad choices Marinelli influenced but really if you want to hold a coach accountable, you have to give them the players they want/need..

really at 10 you cant go wrong with parsons, Horn, or Surtain...

hopefully in the second we get player like Barmore..

i dont think they can mess up the first two rounds getting two of the most likely targets on defense..the first pick will influence the second etc..

Only difference this time is Horn, Farley, and Surtain pretty much all grade out the same..its a coin flip i dont think any of them including adding parsons in there would be a bad choice. watt fell in the draft dont act like Dallas was the only team that had questions about him, sure in hindsight they made mistake but in the moment TJ slipped all the way down to bottom 10 in the first, why?

no worries. Quinn will be gone after a year and we will be running a whole different scheme
