Heading in the draft, these were the Cowboys needs, CB, S, DT1, DT3, Edge, LB, FS, T

What have they addressed so far:

LB-many believe Parsons was the best linebacker in the entire draft, he also factors in as an Edge rusher.

CB-1st rd talent, with elite traits, heard he had the best 10 yd shuttle in the class, 4.3 speed, ball skills

DT3-many of us projected Milton Williams here, when he was off the board, they took a similar player, who possesses more length. A far better run defender then the two we have, can also play the 4T

Edge-Goldston is the Tyrone Crawford replacement. Good base run DE that can kick inside on the nickel. More of a power player who can set the edge. All my mocks, I was projecting an inside/outside player, he fits that role.

What is still needed:

Safety-there are still a few safeties that can really help. Johnson, Washington, Gillespe.
1T DT-outside of McNeil, all the NT's are still available
Tackle-still a few quality developmental Tackles still there: Hudson, Smith
Edge-team has shown a lot of interest in Rouche from Miami
Linebacker-the likes of Cox/Moises are still there along with some other intriguing options.

Good thread. The main issue is this team has holes to fill, major holes to fill, in its starting 11 on defense. And they're spending premium draft capital to fill out the depth of the roster. That philosophy is head scratching.

*** Just because the franchise drafts players for area need, doesn't mean THE NEED has been solved. Can they make the team and/or even be productive?

.

I have read that he is a good run defender, but I am circumspect that will pan out. How many 282 lb DTs in the NFL are good run defenders? He may have thrown some Pac 12 OGs around, but I am not sure this will translate to the next level.

He is a former wrestler like Togiai, who is also undersized, they both are hard to move despite their size.

I get that and I wrestled, so I appreciate that. The problem is size matters. Thats why they have weight classes in wrestling. I hope I am wrong here. Meanwhile the CB we took in the 3rd looks like he didnt take the college weight room serious.

Not many DT's in the NFL squat over 700 lbs and bench over 420 either. Give the kid a chance

They were going to draft Milton Williams, who had similar size, but lacked the length, which Oggy does possess. Strength/Length are huge inside the trenches. Jay Ratliff played will as a 3-4 NT around the same weight.

I agree. Cowboys may think differently but imo they need a starter at 1tech and FS, yet their drafting rotational (backup DL) this is my confusion with the draft so far.

This team place low value on FS and 1 tech DT and we wonder why we get the worst D in NFL against the run.

He's not drafted to defend the run, he's drafted because he's the best passrushing DT in the class, except maybe Barmore.

Osa is a nickel pass rushing DT, not a plug

Aaron Donald is 6’0 285. Not saying the kid will be him obviously but lets give him a chance. I had no problem with this choice, the last pick was much much more confusing to me.

I'm liking what we have done so far....except for the Nahshon Wright CB Oregon St. pick.........We can knock one out of the park if we hit some picks today.

Give me

a good 1T DT
developmental OT
LB

No safety we pick up now will make an impact. Definitely do not want a smurf at FS

How about a free safety pickup to become a starter? Never in your life?

It depends how old you are. Cliff "Crash" Harris, 1970 FS out of Oachita Baptist College, All 1970's safety.

1981, Michael Downs, rookie FS free agent, 7 INT's in his rookie yeae, another year also with 7 INT's; eight year starter. He was not drafted because he was injured as a senior. The Boys knew this local kid, signed him and got great results.

I think a lot of these dudes are Quinn specials. I know you were big on that 2 gap DE player heading into this draft and I think we got a pair in Osi / Gholson. Parsons is the LBr that can fly and we got a long CB.

I hope they don't think Osi is playing DT in base downs at the next level...he'll get killed.

We have to have better pressure up the middle. I see him as an obvious nick pass rusher. This pick is a reflection on ho anemic we are at both DT positions.
