I have long advocated that this team does not draft enough players from the dominant conference in college football. Even though they didn't all come from the heavyweights Bama, Florida, Georgia and LSU at least we're trending in the right direction. If I were drafting I'd be tempted to take the highest rated player from one of the SEC schools every round. My gut tells me that if I just did that I'd have a pretty good team most years.

Claiborne and Spears were SEC and they ended up pretty ordinary.

The challenge with taking players off Bama, UGA and LSU is their D's are so good it's more difficult to assess the individual player. Both of those players were better on LSU's D than on the Cowboys.

I like the fact Joseph was at UK, easier to assess him on that team.

I do like the two Kentucky kids.. That defense had some nasty to it and they were a big part of that. I will say this.. when you see guys on those other schools flash it means something.. If they stand tall even among giants that gets my attention. But I hear what you're saying..

OTOH - Metro Atlanta sports media annually lambast the Falcons for not drafting Georgia Bulldogs players.

Like this SEC sure fire hit? Just draft the best player. Conference be damned.

That story still blows my mind.

But ya, I agree. Too much is made about specific schools or conferences. After all, arguably the best player the Cowboys drafted in the 2000s so far came from the football powerhouse of Troy.

Coaches watch the college games on tv just like most fans. They see a kid on tv make a play and it sticks in their minds. They also watch more cutups than we could ever imagine (at least they should) but they still watch games.

Yeah try evaluating a CB who has a ridiculous front seven terrorizing opposing QBs. It's easier to cover when you only have to for a couple seconds. Nothing against Surtain, but it is what it is.
