Just curious......so with this typical package, as of now, who would be starting front 7?
Also, isn't Gregory a LBer, instead of DE in this package.

Tank....DE
Woods...DT
Gilmore ...DT
Gregory...DE

Smith.....LBer
LVE........LBer
Parson...LBer

Darn.....I'm confused
Idk, it's what Quinn said, specifically. DE vs. OLB distinction doesn't really matter. My guess is that the 3-4 front will look something like:

Gregory - Urban - Gallimore - DLaw - Parsons
LVE - Jaylon

In the base nickel:

Gregory - Urban - Gallimore - DLaw
LVE - Parsons

Those DL will rotate, but I'd guess that's the general approach.

Go back and reread. The comparison is of Parsons and Matthews in college and as rookies in the league.

No need for that -- I was merely referring to the tendency that some of us display to already compare them to Matthews, who has had the advantage of professional tutoring. He has already had the advantage of his development while they don't. I'd much prefer to wait until Parsons and Cox get the same amount of time and development before assuming what they might become as professionals. They're different individuals in very different time frames. They also haven't even had the advantage of their rookie year as of yet. Let's see how they perform as rookies before jumping the gun.

Well, the more I look into it.

if Quinn is running a 3-4 in base. Yes Parsons will probably be OLB In those packages.

Or if Quinn is running the 4-3 under. I see Parsons as the SLB more likely. The SLB in the 4-3 under is on the edge, standing next to the strong side DL, which would be Lawrence.

so you would have tank Lawrence, and Parsons on the same edge together in those situations.

Which could be lethal.

Parsons and Lawrence would be impossible to block (assuming Tank is giving full effort)! If you pick one up, the other gets the QB or run to the outside. I would love the thought of this!!

So you don't think Jaylon Smith is on the field in the base nickel ????

They're not going to play a 4-3, ever. They'll be a 3-4 "base" but in nickel 65-70% of the time.
Quinn has always switched it up and has already said they will be multiple. He has stated they will normally line up in a 3-4 in the base D, but that doesn't mean they will never be in a 4-3.

First they said Parsons was a combo of Ray Lewis and Von Miller....now they're comparing him to Clay Matthews. Can we just allow this poor guy to be himself? I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do on the field.

Once a game counts as never lol

I don't care if they have a handful of packages that are technically a 4-3, if they're only going to be in them two plays a game.

Saw a draft review where someone listed Parsons as similar to Clay Matthews. I thought that was interesting especially since McCarthy was in GB and chose Matthews. Coaches tend to go back to the same well for water. Will McCarthy try to use Parsons in a similar way as he did with Matthews?

Matthews was the 26th pick in 2009. Parsons the 12th. Parsons is a little lighter but much quicker. Matthews was a 3-4 LB. Will the Cowboys be using Parsons as a 3-4 OLB at times? Matthews had 10 sacks as a rookie.

Anyone remember Clay Matthews in college? I don’t. How do they compare in college tape? Would you say Parsons has more talent and potential than Matthews as a rookie?

I remember Matthews. If memory servers, he was actually a DE at USC. He shared time with Griffen there. Matthews was not all that productive at USC, to be honest. He was projected on his physical abilities, more then anything. I think Matthews, coming out, was much more experienced as a Pass Rusher then is Parsons. Parsons, at this point, is a LB, he's not an Edge Rusher or a DL. If that's what the Cowboys want to use him as, he has a learning curve. He's not a finished product there. He's not even somebody you can just stand up on the edge and expect him to play the position IMO. He can play LB for you though. But it has to be in the right scheme, he's not going to be successful unless you can protect him. He's not going to mix it up with Guards and be successful IMO. You have to keep him clean. He's a lot like what we have right now with Smith and LVE, to me.

Looks like Sam is where he lined up most of the time in college too.

Yes. I think Sam makes the most sense when in the 4-3 under or “base” packages.

And then nickel LB when in nickel.

Can you please point me to the interview or piece that quoted Quinn on this? I have not seen this interview.

Oh, ye, who are all high and mighty, and refuse that cardinal sin of comparing certain traits of one player to another. How dare I do such a thing and not patiently wait until you wave your hand and allow others to weigh in on a topic.

Newsflash: This ‘poor guy’ Parsons will not be harmed by any comparisons to others on a football chat. Trust me. LBs are not like that. QBs and CBs? Not so sure.

Isn’t there some other parade you can rain on now?

Hey bud. I don’t know if Quinn said exactly what that poster was saying. But here’s video of the recent press conference.

Quinn does mention being like 3-4 in “base”
But being a 4 man line in nickel which is like 70% of the snaps.

but he leaves it open to some interpretation I think.

Every team plays in a 4-3 at least some of the time, any dc worth a hoot won't totally ignore one of the best defensive alignments ever....
Ok fine. Let's do some math on it. Assuming an offense runs 11 personnel 65% of the time, which requires nickel, and that they run 70 offensive plays.

65% - 11 personnel - 46 plays
10% - 10, 01, 00, 20 spread personnel - 7 plays
5% - 22, 23 short yardage personnel - 4 plays
20% - 12, 21 personnel - 14 plays

Assuming an NFL offense runs 70 plays, were only talking about 14 plays where they 4-3/3-4 distinction even matters, because that's the only plays they're used. If a DC comes out and says they're going to skew 3-4, you're not going to see 4-3 bundles more than 2-3 times per game.

I don't care if a team runs a 3-4 or a 4-3, because it doesn't matter. The number of snaps where a team is in base is low (this is high end), and the number of times that difference would actually matter is virtually non-existent.

Nickel is really the only defense that matters.

Well, said this before but when I see Parsons, I see LaVar Arrington. Maybe it's just the Jersey but I think they are very similar.
