I am not a Kuiper fan at all, but this video is pretty unfair to me. To go through his career and pick his worst mistakes out of literally thousands of evaluations is what is called a hit piece. Kuiper has been wrong a lot, but so have some top GMs. No one in the history of the sport has been perfect in these draft evaluations and predictions. And let's not forget that the teams that pick these players - the so called professionals - make the same mistakes as Kuiper.

I don't like the guy, but I will give him credit for being a self-starter, and motivated enough to push his idea to market draft evaluations because look at that business now. There are literally dozens of services that do the same thing, not to mention all the amateurs on the internet.

It is a hit piece and unfair, and I'm sure Kiper is chuckling on his way to the bank, to the extent he cares at all.

I suppose I was one of Kiper's earlier subscribers, all the way back to the 80s. In those days, when you called to order the annual guide, Kiper usually answered the phone, and he would talk draft with you for a half hour or more. Knew his stuff and was genuinely a nice, though intense guy.

I think he was a bit more daring then. His opinions were much less shaded by conversations with NFL folks and agents. He missed some players, of course, but generally he was quite accurate and often ahead of the curve.

He still does a good job. Yeah he misses some. Over the course of many years, he has missed quite a few. And he has also hit on more than his share.

Kiper is an easy target, but his success is no accident.

Kiper found a niche and exploited it and has made a very good living doing so. Good for him, but he’s a fraud. He knows no more about who will or won’t be a successful player than 90% of NFL fans. He’s far worse than your local meteorologist.

I got his wife on the phone one time. Very cool. They are good people.

Jimmy wanted LB James Francis over Emmitt Smith.
Parcells wanted Spears before Ware
And then later in the 1st took Spears ahead of Aaron Rodgers

And then there was Bobby Carpenter in the 1st round.

Ah, the human condition

Great take.

Love him or hate him, Mel Kiper basically built the draft evaluation/fandom industry.
And once you realize that the draft is one big guessing game, you're less perturbed about absolute accuracy.
I find it interesting and ironic that Bill Tobin once asked "Who the H*&+ is Mel Kiper?"
Now people could ask, "Who the H*&+ is Bill Tobin?"

I'm more disturbed at the "tear" coming from Pat's eye.

I recall Kiper blasting Dallas on taking Troy Aikman over Tony Mandarich

Kiper is getting old. It happens to all of us. Only the good die young.
