I still 100% believe that if Jerry has a crystal ball and could've known that Fields and Jones would be sitting there at 10 he would have either franchised Dak or flat out not signed him to that massive contract.

Jerry will never admit it, but I don't think he'd pass a polygraph if he said he'd have still signed Dak.

We need to worry about winning our own division before we worry about the other NFC teams.

The defense wasn't terrible in 2019 like you said, in fact, it was a top 12 defense. We still went 8-8 that year. The defense is not always the issue. When you lose games where the defense holds teams to 17, 13, and 12 points then you have to look at the offense, specifically the QB. Dak threw ZERO TDs in those 3 games combined. So, unless Dak turns it around and starts playing well against playoff caliber teams then nothing will matter anyways.
I dont disagree, but I also think last years mess was mostly attributable to the Nolan mistake (they weren't even competitive and clearly had the wrong personnel) which has been corrected.

Maybe Quinn isn't any better. No way to know right now, but at least we aren't trying to install a complicated new scheme with no off season.

As far as the teams approach, of course worry about the division first. Crawling before walking makes full sense.

However as a fan, I'm not interested in getting back to peak Garrett level and calling it progress.

Looking a bit forward, which fans have the luxury of doing.....I'm saying the NFC is by no means an impossible conference to navigate through if they are in playoff contention.

You don't know he "couldn't win" any more than others know he can. You're just hoping he can't. You might as well relax and go with the flow dude, Dak's not going anywhere soon whether you like it or not. If he's healthy, he'll be here. They didn't guarantee him all that money just to send him packing, just because you don't like him.
Why would I hope He can't win. . . I don't dislike him. . . Jerry gave him the money, enough said

Six years later with 1 leg and now he is gonna turn it around

Yes. The lobbying against Dak is more worthless now than ever. He is our QB for the next few years and the no trade clause insured it.

Don't forget the big elephant in the room. The money.

He got paid and is set for life. He doesn't have to be good anymore.
Exactly, Jerry Jones strikes again. . . only 2 more years 3 max of this . . . by the way Dalton took a team with that defense to 6-5 record even after this team not having his back.

For 10 million this year . . . now people are complaining because Steven said we are bargain box shopping . . . the same people who insisted we pay Dak.

It is what it is only 3 more years until the whole fan base wakes up and turns on him

"Jason Garrett is holding this team back..."

Once he's gone, we can compete.

"Tony Romo is holding this team back..."

Once he's gone, we can compete.

"Dak is holding this team back..."

Once he's gone, we can compete.

"(Fill in the next scapegoat for Jerry's incompetence here) is holding this team back..."

"The NEXT scapegoat" ? It's Dak of course. Dak replaces all other scapegoats; Past, present, and future.

Anything can happen, and while I think our defense will be better this season, realistically, I think we are 1-2 years away from serious contention at the top of the NFL.

The defense will be better this year, but most of our rookies will take at least a year in the system and training program to be as impactful as a contender needs. Add to that another offseason with another draft, along with a free agent period where we may be slightly more aggressive if we see the team with a real opportunity to succeed, and I believe the Cowboys can be NFC/NFL championship contenders.

I like this draft class, but if most of these players turn out to be backups at best, Dallas will be looking at more dark times. If both LBs meet expectations, if at least 1 CB becomes a starter, if 1-2 of our DL picks at least become part of the game day rotation, and if Urban, Kazee, and Neal play as well as they did with former teams, this season will be fun to watch, and Jerry will be looking to extend a couple of 1-year contracts.
Says who though? Surely not you?

We can be in contention THIS year if somebody forces Stephen to stop playing bean counter in free agency. USE free agency to shore up those holes with actual talent instead of signing 10 cheap guys, 9 of who don't finish the season with us.

don't want to be that guy, but we've always been 1 year away, as least for most of the last 30 years.

In a year, we very well may see Tyron, Cooper, Zeke, Gallup, Vander Each, Jaylon, Williams, and possibly even Lawrence or Martin gone.

Two steps forward, two steps back.

Treading water for decades.

I was strongly against paying Dak that much but it is what it is. At this point, I hope I was wrong.

The way that I would be wrong is if Dallas turns into drafting savants. If they hit it out of the park consistently in the draft then you don't need free capspace to fix holes in the roster. That gets us to the list.

Dallas needs many but not all of these things to happen in order to be a contender:
- Dak coming back healthy and playing as well if not better than before
- The offensive line coming back healthy
- Zeke having a bounceback year
- A number of the rookies being good players pretty quickly. Like 3 or 4 of them.
- Dan Quinn proving that his time in Atlanta was an aberration and that he can both teach his system and it works with this personnel group
- No other random big injuries that compromise the whole team

Not impossible but that whole list is a pretty big ask. We are going to be asking a ton of Quinn and a bunch of rookies on the defensive side of the ball.
