Potential Cap Casualties

Instead of cutting any of these guys why not try to trade them?

After all, the Lions gave the Cowboys a 6th for Everson Griffen last season and Dallas used that pick on Quinton Bohanna.

You assume teams want them. I think if we trade a player it will likely be Hill.

I think Thompson, Canady and Brown are most likely due to numbers. Thompson is probably the fifth safety (Wilson, Kazee, Mukuama and Kearse) while I think we'll only keep four to go long at corner (especially since Neal also could be counted as a safety). However, if Mukuama doesn't show well, we could keep Thompson as the only other true FS on the roster. Even going long at corner, it will be hard to keep Canady. I've got Diggs, Joseph, Brown, Lewis, Wright and Goodwin ahead of him. It's possible that Wright will need some time to develop, but I can't see us trying to get a third-round pick on the practice squad. Canady then would likely have to beat out Goodwin, but we love him for his special teams play. At receiver, it could come down to Wilson vs. Brown. Wilson is the better receiver while Brown is the better blocker. I think Fehoko could better fill Brown's role for now. That would leave us with five receivers — Cooper, Lamb, Gallup, Wilson and Fehoko — so we could keep both or possibly Malik Turner or a young, cheaper player instead.
Don’t forget about Reggie Robinson ll. I doubt we are giving up on him already.

Hill is a good candidate to not make the team. A good chance that all of the rookie draft picks make the team except maybe the last one. I really think that at least the first 10 picks make it. Quinn is going to go with his guys and I'm all for it.

Wilson and Nseke probably stick but the rest of those guys could be cut easily. Watkins may get a year because he signed as a FA but there’s a lot of competition on the DL now. Same with Kearse...but he’ll need to flash a lot on ST to maintain his roster spot.

That happened last year because Griffin had already shown something in his career before Dallas. Other than Cedric Wilson (who hasn’t done that much), no one on that list would garner a single draft pick. No one makes trades for guys on the chopping block with no resume’.

Firstly, we can't walk away from any of our big contracts this year. That's D-Law, Dak, T.Smith, J.Smith, Zeke, Martin, L.Collins, and Cooper. Cooper, Jaylon and Tyron could be done next year if circumstances required.

A few of the mid-tier wouldn't make sense to cut this season either. Brown and Jarwin having too much dead money, while Urban + Basham have fully guaranteed contracts so it wouldn't make sense to cut them unless you need the roster spot.

The ones that could be cut
Cedric Wilson - 2.1m cap hit, 0 dead money
Ty Nseke - 1.25m, 500k dead money
Carlos Watkins - 1.75m cap hit, 500k dead money
Darian Thompson - 1.28m cap hit, 100k dead money
Maurice Canady - 1.25m cap hit, 200k dead money
Jayron Kearse - 1.1m cap hit, 150k dead money
Noah Brown - 1.1m cap hit, 130k dead money

We could theoretically cut all of them and free up about 5m. It's not a huge amount and I think we'd only do it if rookies show more in pre-season than the vets. But these are the names to look at being cut.
Dak?

Thompson and Kearse are special team starters and are going no where. Same with Wilson (punt returns) and is a great depth receiver, a Dak favorite.

Offensive line wont be touched. Depth needed.

That leaves Canady, Watkins and Brown.

Depending on how our rookies show at camp those would be the bubble names. Also depends if they sign another vet CB which would make Canady expendable.
We probably wont keep both Kerse and Thompson, we will probably cut one. Neither figures to have a role on defense. Canady probably doesn't have much chance unseating Goodwin for that last CB/ST spot

Kiss them all goodbye other than maybe Wilson or Brown. Choose one.
Actually it’s one of the rookies job to push one of the roster
And to do that they need to show they can help on ST because brown and Wilson both do
You aren’t gonna be active as a 4th WR if you don’t play ST

Not really too concerned with bottom of the roster players to be honest.

They are your core special teamers and depth
Finally we are starting to see special teams taken serious
You aren’t gonna be the 4th WR if you don’t play special teams

It’s not much of a savings with any of them. For cap reasons maybe Wilson, if Fehoko can take the 5th Wr because he is supposedly great at special teams. But Wilson would most likely get trading for a late round pick because he is probably good enough to be a teams 3rd wr. Others would just get cut because they aren’t good enough to make the team.

Next year we will see some cap causalities. Jaylon Smith savings $5 million, Anthony Brown savings $5 million, Zuerlein $2.5. The wr situation might be interesting to watch. If Gallup can be resigned to something around $14 million a year, then there might be a decision to make between him and Cooper. Probably wouldn’t cut Cooper but can’t see them keeping both.

I am too
But ST is an important part of the game and can win you a game every now and again, or lose you games every year
But I am impressed they addressed defense this year so heavily
I’m also hoping it’s not forgotten in the next draft though OT and WR are likely to be needs as well

This is really the first draft in a long time that was truly devoted to improving the defense. They are on a mission. Job isnt done. They need one more draft like this next year devoted to the defense and we have to hope they hit on some of these picks.

We still need a NT, FS, LB and possibly a 4-3 DE.
