I was part of the crowd who wanted Meyer badly. I thought he was just what we needed as a HC. But my opinion started to change when his leading candidate for OC was said to be Scott Linehan. Why saddle your rookie QB with a guy who couldn’t even last a season as a college assistant post Cowboys?

I did a bit of digging and saw that some media members felt that Meyer’s challenges would be his lack of a robust NFL network. His college network spread vastly but he never had the time/place to build an NFL one. This started to become apparent with his coaching hires. Many bland and average guys who’ve been tied to him.

After the Linehan flirtation, Meyer followed it up with trying to hire a controversial strength coach and having to reverse decision post-locker room/media reaction. Both not as confusing as the Tebow signing, who now media report the coaches in the building are spilt on. Good luck with that one Urban. If the coaches are iffy then the locker room is probably the same.

Imagine if we hired him and he’d done all this, we’d be extremely skeptical at best. We’ll see how the team does on the field but I’m not encouraged. Lawrence may be his saving grace. I think we really dodged a bullet, though I’m not super into Mike McCarthy.
Meyer may fail. He may fail big time. But if he fails, I don’t think any of the reasons he fails will be the ones listed by you.

@817Gill I preferred Meyer over Garrett and McCarthy. I have zero confidence McCarthy will have more wins over Meyer this year. I wouldn’t know which to bet on.

Meyer is the better game strategist. Hands down, Meyer would destroy McCarthy if both had college rosters. I think Meyer’s game and style will translate well in the NFL as long as Meyer continues his style and does not try to change Lawrence into something he is not.

The Panther HC looks totally different than what he was at Baylor.

The college game is coming to the NFL. Just a matter of time. More exciting. Meyer winning will speed the process up. Could be a changing of the guard soon. The old fogey coaches might be done.

Only thing that concerned me with Myers is his health issues that lead to him leaving Florida Gators and then with OSU but in terms of the job he did I think he is a very good HC. Just not sure of the staying power to remain.
That was the first time - late December 2009; but immediately afterwards he altered his decision to be "an indefinite leave of absence"....but resumed his HC duties less than 3 months later. The second time Meyer resigned from Florida - early December 2010 - he said spending more time with his family as the main reason.
Meyer's last game as Gators HC was a bowl game on January 1st 2011.
Late November 2011 he became HC at Ohio State.

We have no idea how Meyer will pan out in the NFL. Let’s pump the brakes here.

Agree 100%. Especially in Big D. The culture here won’t change until the 78 year old face of the franchise recognizes he’s the poison in the culture well.

It’s a good thing you are not obsessed with Jerry. Sure am glad you don’t hate the guy. Sure hate to see your posts if you were obsessed with hate for the guy.

I got a kick out of posters calling Wade's camp Camp Cupcake when Booger wouldn't even allow him to raise fines for tardiness and missed meetings and Booger handed out Media Passes to some players. Those meetings with the team and coaches weren't nearly as important as an interview on a network.

Later that season, on the last day of the regular season, they would play the most heartless game ever played by the franchise and be OK with that.

The culture is it's OK to lose and moral victories count. Because it's all about how it looks and plays out in TV land.

He is a very good college HC, he's proven that several times. But I do wonder if he'll get like Petrino, Saban and Spurrier once he gets a full taste of Millionaire Football?

Jimmy Johnson going from "my way or the highway" before FA and the tail beginning to wag the dog was very telling. I think that did Parcells in as well. Even on a team as bad as the Jags, the money will still talk the loudest.

Meyer openly pitched for the job on that pregame show and that was a head scratcher. He's known as a control coach. Did he think the Joneses were going to change their MO just for him?

I think McC wanted this job because he figured it wouldn't be held against him if he failed because everyone assumes the HC is just the Assistant to the GM with the Cowboys.

The biggest mistake any coaching candidate can make is to assume the Joneses have learned their lesson and will change. We only try to stop making mistakes when we pay for them and that has yet to happen to them.

I wanted Rivera but I don't think he would have taken the job. That interview with Snyder took weeks, not 12 hours, and it looks like Rivera was interviewing him as to if he was ready to give up some control and stop making mistakes.

There's a practice in hiring people in management unless you know them very well. Never hire on the first interview. Granted, 12 hours isn't your standard interview but we know what Booger was looking for, his comfort level with this candidate. Do you think Meyer could make him comfortable?
Two alpha males playing well with others? Sure...:muttley:

Meyer is head and shoulders better than Garrett.

I have no interest either way in Tebow....however, fwiw
Assistant coaches talked Meyer into giving him a chance to try out.
They went to three different workouts (not with Meyer) and kept coming back with reviews that he was in the best shape of his life and had balls skills and movement of a 20 year old.

Still would be surprised if he makes it
I assume the assists went because Meyer gave them the ok....favorfor a friend thing.

Lion do you see Lawrence having a rookie season like Herbert did?

Wow Herbert was amazing....

It could be like Luck in Indy, where he’s pretty good and carries the team to a surprising record. Admiringly I didn’t see “best prospect since Andrew Luck” in college. He was awesome, but I thought Watson looked more NFL-type at Clemson. So I’ll have to take everyone else’s word for it

I also like Rivera , but he is a good defensive coach and he turned around the Washington defense in 1 year almost to a top5 defense , but the offensive side , meh ? I am not following they didnt get a QB in FA or draft , and that is the only hope they will have enough holes to overcome to mount a serious challenge to NFC east.

I’d love to have Meyer over McCarthy.

We don’t have Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers in Dallas and it showed last season.

He owes all of his success to HOF QBs imo.

Only thing I know is he has a tumor that causes him to have bad days and headaches. Great guy and I wish him well.

i don't think Meyer will be based off what Tebow does, that's just a sideshow to get the media and fans re-interested in the Jax organization. again.
it's Trevor Lawrence situation, the defense, player personnel, wins over losses that is gonna make or break Meyers.

-If there was gonna be a college HC i would have thought it'd be Lincoln Riley who is said to have a relationship tied to the Jones.
But the primary goal of the Cowboys HC search was a veteran whose been in the trenches, had NFL success, a leader and a guy that they could
count on hitting the ground running , and Not having to have to learn and grow into the NFL.

- And the HC pickings were not really out there at the time.
Only WFT's Ron Rivera may have been a likely choice too, but the WFT were fast to grab him up first. :p
