How much improvement do you expect by the defense this year? How many points do you expect them to give up this year in total? How many less points will be scored against us this year?

The Dallas Cowboys gave up 473 points for a 29.6 points per game. That’s a lot of points.

I’m expecting them to improve by at least 5 points per game this year at a minimum. I really expect it to average 7 points per game less.

I think the whole league gave up more points last year, and the Cowboys were 28th...ouch
The Cowboys were 23rd in total defense

The offenses--especially early in the year--had a big leg up overall

Cowboys gave up 29.6 ppg (hard to believe there were 4 teams worse)

I say they give up 26.1 this year, or 3.5 ppg less.

That’s a very minor improvement. Where do you think that would rank them statistically form 1 to 32?

We play some decently bad teams. Can the Eagles, Giants and Commanders score 24 points each on us on average? I would hope not.

I think if we had kept the exact same defenders with zero improvement on defense, teams would score more than 3 points less per game than they did last year, simply because Dak and the OL are healthy. More time of possession by our offense should theoretically lower the opponents opportunity to score by itsself.

If Dak and the offense account for 3 less points per game, and the defense improved itsself by 3 points per game, thats a significant difference.

Is the fat guy in the middle worth another less point per game? I’m thinking YES. At least I hope so.

Most important question is how many points is the offense going to score. Will the offense keep the defense off the field? Will the offense give the defense a lead and allow them to pin their ears back and get after the QB? Or is the defense going to be playing from behind a lot?
I remind you that the money is being spent on the offense. Dak $40M, Elliott $15M, Cooper $20M, Tyron $10M, Martin $10M, Collins $10M, and Jarwin $5M. All that money spent on offense and people looking at the defense as the fault.
It is time for the offense to carry the load.

I don't see anyone asking the Chiefs how many points is their defense going to give up? When is the Chief defense going to step up? It is all on Mahomes, Kelce, Hill and the offense to deliver.

Enough that people will blame the defense for all the losses even though a decent amount of them is because the offense doesn't show up until the 3rd quarter.

Hoping for top 22-25ish

Last year it would've been 19th (we were 28th)

I guess if league-wide scoring goes back to 2019 levels, I’ll say 24.1 (or 5 pts lower)

442 points for a 26 ppg. average

Give me what they gave up under Marinelli in 2019, 20.1 points per game.

I feel new scheme, new players, hungry players and the players believing in the scheme will improve our defense to 20 points a game.
Parsons, KJ, FAs all take away 1-3 points a game. Healthy Dak and offense is another 2-3 points, and a scheme that has players knowing what they're doing 2-4 points. So that's my breakdown for the 10 point improvement.

The Cowboys could make no change at all in their defense and they would improve just by staying healthy.

The 11 starters in game #1 in 2020 missed a combined third of the season due to injury. A backup started on defense for 1 out of every 3 positions throughout the course of the season. It was actually far worse than that if you considered that Gerald McCoy was supposed to be the starter at DT.

Imagine the position of DT if McCoy, Hill, and Gallimore had been healthy all season.

Now, the Cowboys will add an entire draft class to the defense when you consider they spent 8 draft picks on the unit. That's a 1st, 2nd, three 3rds,4th, and two 6th. At least two will probably start with possibly six of them making some real contribution.

The defense will have the benefit of a more compatible defense, minicamps, training camp, and preseason games to learn Quinn's defense. last season this was replaced by virtual computer meetings.

This defense has the potential to improve more than any other defense in the league.

I don't think, at least hope not, we give our opponents nearly as many short fields as last year. Plus, I do believe we've improved our D. Both should lead to giving up around 22.5 points per game.

I think they give up 5 PPG less easily. The change in scheme will do that.
We will still need to see how all the changes gel though.

I think overall they will be between 22 to 25 PPG. They may be 25 to 28 for the 1st 3 or 4 weeks, then it should drop to average that 22 to 25.
But could be playing the last 3 to 5 weeks giving up 20 to 22 if all goes well.

However as @Verdict mentioned, with Dak on the field again, and better sustained drives, less turnovers, that should be worth 3 PPG less. So we could see a difference of 8 PPG less by mid season.

My overpriced ( and lite BTW) magic 8ball predicts the Dallas defense will give up approximately 142 points during the 2021 season:starspin:

*Though, upon in-depth & detailed inquiry of the questioned subject matter? Tho,the combined total of GIVEN UP POINTS tween the #4&#21 will more than likely be brain aneurysm inducing to the unaccustomed young, weak of will&those feeble in wheelhouse operational faculties,,,er,,, but fer' $19.46,,, sent to me( cash only) I'll reveal it to you in an P.M. :flagwave:
