There is no doubt if we can field even a mediocre D with the O we will be in the playoffs. The Cowboys were averaging over 36 points per game with Dak at quarterback last year. Of course, some of that was a byproduct of being behind (for example, the 4th quarter explosion against Cleveland; when Dallas trailed 41-14 before eventually losing 49-38).
Regardless, a respectable defense should be able to hold most of their opponents at or under five touchdowns per game. The lasting image of the 2020 season for me was in December when a Ravens lineman shouted "easy money" into the camera after one of Baltimore's scores. That's embarrassing.
The Cowboys will win more games so long as they can keep their opponents off the scoreboard more often. Let's not overcomplicate things.
Problem is that a mediocre D will get hammered in the playoffs and the top D's out there will limit us.
I want another Lombardi. Nothing less. And we will need more than a mediocre D to get one.
