I doubt it was anything more than a day three pick.

They will get that as a comp of they don't re sign him.

Why not keep him to see if he turns things around, or if nothing else....for depth...if the compensation is the same, which may suggest it was more.

If it was a 1st or 2nd....they are idiots for not doing it.

If they give him the extension right now, they can get him for a reasonable amount and just cut him later if it doesn’t work out. If they wait until he proves it this year, and he’s back to rookie form he could ask for the moon. It is a big risk. Top 5 QB money, top 5 DE money, top 5 RB money, top 5 G money, top 5 WR money, and then also top 5 LB money? It may be too rich
First, how do you know what they could get him for now, or that LVE wouldn't choose to gamble like Dak did by refusing to negotiate until he has proven himself over another year?

That said, it's true that if he plays well the price could go up, but if they sign him to an extension now they won't be able to cut him later with no consequences the way you suggest. There will be guaranteed money and a cap hit, so there is a gamble either way.

In a world where he'll agree for little guaranteed $ and we don't have to spread out a bonus.

Dallas is hedging--we have Smith on a long term deal, a rookie 1# & #3 pick, a FA on a 1 year deal, & LVE. They're smart to see how this plays out before throwing anymore money at the position.

I'd bet money that Smith's isn't "a long term deal". I expect him to be one of the surest cuts next year.

But it's not outside the realm of possibility that he bounces back--and if he does, his contract is not bad for a legit LB.

If he is really good in 2021 they will get a comp pick if he signs elsewhere.

By keeping him they get the player for 2021 on a cheap rookie contract AND they get a comp pick if he is too expensive to re-sign.

The 5th year option had no benefit to the team but did have a downside.
- The 5th year option is guaranteed for injury and the entire question with him is injury issues.
- If they sign him before next year then they can either structure the deal to protect them if he is injured in 2021 OR they can sign him to a lower contract than normal if he wants some amount of guarantee against injury in 2021.

I think your point is that the 5th year option is really only good for the team if the player would get paid more if he was a free agent.

I would bet against that happening. I firmly believe that he is almost certainly playing his final season in Dallas.

people really forget the whole comp pick process don’t they? Honestly if you can’t get at least a 3rd for a starter why would you trade in most cases

LVE will find out soon enough if he'll be a free agent when the season ends. Dallas just wants to get every penny out of him making up for his lost time.

The offers have to be horrendous for them to reject.
Why?

He has shown terrific ability when healthy.

It was not his neck that shutdown his season in 2020. It was a broken collarbone.

The neck surgery that he had before the 2020 season was a "minimally invasive" type surgery.
- My understanding is that it was a nerve issue not a structural issue.

This front office isn't capable of projecting. When he has no value then they'll look to trade.
I sincerely hope that isn't true, although given the overall results it's tough to offer them the benefit of doubt.

This year the nflpa and nfl agreed to make the 5th year option fully guaranteed.
