Note to fans. They are not getting a 3rd round pick for either of their linebackers and they are not going to trade the excellent depth that they have.
I will never understand the excitement that comes from trading players away for picks in the third round or later rounds. Dallas does not have a good history of drafting players in the later rounds and the team gets comp picks when the player signs with another team. Every blue moon they may stumble on a decent player drafted in the later rounds, but it doesn’t happen very often.

If any team offered anything above a 5th round pick he would be out the door before it closed.

Ok let's say a third round pick was offered. What would you do, wait to see if he can be better and not injured? or take it?
Gone, and I like the kid. J smith gone for a 3rd would make me smile.

They decline his 5th year deal to refuse the trade him? Maybe an extension is imminent
It’s all about the comp picks. That’s why he’s here that’s why Gallup’s still here. They know it may be a year down the road but you get the player for a season and you get a comp pic pretty comparable to what you’d get in a trade.

A third/fourth for Gallup is all you’d want in a trade...?

That's not true. They can franchise tag him and then negotiate a new deal without the rest of the league interfering. But this won't happen unless he balls out in the coming season.

Well I know they can franchise tag him. But after the tag you're in the same position. Signing him to a new contract. It will be top dollar.

This is all true, but I think LVE is a different situation because of the injury concern. It's harder to commit early because of the neck issues.

I can't blame them. They committed to Zeke, Jaylon Smith, and La'el Collins. Not to Tank, Byron, or Dak. Not the best history of results either way. Dak has probably the best structured contract out of all of them. But Tank is being paid like a quarterback, and we lost Byron.

Stop right there! Let's look at your post that I replied to and then we'll see how you are now trying to move the goal post.

There is no option to extend if he plays out his 4th year. It would be a new contract. Dallas would be competing with the rest of the league. That's why they lost Byron.

I showed how we don't have to compete with the rest of the league to resign him but it would require him to ball out this coming season. Your reply now seems to indicate you don't want to pay top dollar for players that ball out. WTH! You're not going to build a championship team being cheap.

All I said in my post was that there was no option to extend after you play out your last year of the rookie contract. And there isn't. That doesn't change with a franchise tag. A tag only delays it. A franchise tag doesn't give you any leverage on a new contract. ZERO! You're paying top dollar whether you tag him or not. You're just delaying that a year. Just look at Tank's contract. A franchise tag changes nothing in regards to the contract. All it does is allow you to pay the player more than anyone else.

If it’s a late round pick then it makes sense because we can keep him and get one
More year out of him while still getting a likely fourth round comp pick.
So any trade offer would have to be significantly better than the fourth rounder comp pick IMO

Not all you’d want all that you’d get offered. Who’s giving you a second rounder for someone who will either leave or cost you a big contract the following year and he isn’t a proven #1

That's nonsense! First, I only advocated he be tagged if he balls out this coming season. Once he's proven he's worth of a top-dollar contract, we should have no problem giving him one. If he's not worthy of the tag then let him go. I'm not recommending the Cowboys take this route. I'm just correcting your suggestion there was no option to extend him without competing with the rest of the league. IMO, that's an ignorant statement. The tag gives you ample time to negotiate a long-term deal without competing with the rest of the league for his services.

You’re pretty much right. No one is offering a second for either. They can get a big deal somewhere else we get the third. It makes sense.

I think it’s two things:

  1. They want to see him prove it in terms of having a healthy season; and
  2. If he can prove #1 (and of course play well) they would offer him an extension much less AAV than what picking up his 5th year would have been.
Between he and Jaylon, I’ve got infinitely more confidence in LVE turning it around than I do Jaylon.

I also think LVE’s first half of the season is critical. If he’s healthy and plays well I think you’ll see the Cowboys try to extend him rather than him hot free agency and let the price jack up.

I think LVE is acutely aware of needing to stay healthy barring a freak injury. This past post-season he indicated he was going to work even harder to get in the best (protective) shape of his career.

someone who doesn’t think they’d win the free agency bid for him or wouldn’t want to risk it, happens often

And I think that's the issue with trading him or Jaylon. What on earth would teams even want to trade? They are trying to kick the tires and do it for cheap. Just like how the Cowboys traded for Robert Quinn.

Like I try and tell people on here though...I think a big selling point made by Quinn in his interview is that he can get LVE and Jaylon right. That was a big reason why Mike Nolan came here and that's what the Cowboys are hoping base don how they handled this free agency period.
Exactly, garage sale shoppers trying to buy at pennies on the dollar.
This roster is much better off at LB depth overall now, that alone is worth more than the scavengers are offering.
Jaylon and LVE both still have a solid role, and I believe Quinn knows this.

Pure speculation, but I always thought the Colts could be a possible destination for Jaylon. He’s from Indiana and Matt Eberflus (his first LB coach w/Dallas) coaches there.

Not sure of what Eberflus thinks of Jaylon but he certainly has some familiarity with him.
