They went back to a more traditional defense and gap assignments towards the end. Simplification plus the players picking up the concepts allowed the staff and players to meet somewhere in the middle.
Im just tagging last year with an asterisks, was a failed season league wide... the reset button on the back of the router has been pushed now.

Dallas suddenly has a deep investment in Lbs. We are going to need some playcalling from our LBS. Suppose we put 4 LBers out there now.

A 3-4 defense would be a interesting. Defense with the talent we have now why not run a 3-4 defense and make us a special defense Like Doomsday or the Steel Curtain whatever.

I want our defense to really do something to shake up our rep. Winning would be a nice start.

It's obvious that you don't know EVERYTHING that goes into running a successful 3-4 defense. Along with having FOUR capable LB's to play LB, you also need the right type of DE's and NT to run a successful 3-4. The NT is normally of the large type that is capable of tying up 2 offensive linemen on each play. The4 front 7 in a 4-3 are not the same as the front 7 in a 3-4. They all have different skill levels needed.

The Cowboys have 2 LB's that there are legit questions on, LVE and Smith so it makes sense to have a few LB's in camp competing for the LB positions, not for fans sitting on their couches to think hey how about switching to 3-4.

Yep, and who's to know who the Cowboys would have drafted had Nolan been the DC still? Maybe players that would fit his scheme better?
Maybe but Nolan has been living off his Family name and what he did with the Ravens defense that Already had Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Chris McAllister.

Go to a 3-4 scheme just for the sake that we have human blooded bodies? .. ..not based on ability but just bodies ? .

We just drafted new LBs, because there were questionable issues with the existing ones,
and that’s just 2 new LBs, plus a long time vet safety that will be converting to a nickel LB, ..not a full time starter, much less a 3-4 inside LB.

And I do not think you commit to a scheme unless you believe that it is really what you want to do, because it’s your biggest philosophy and preference.

umm they both count until they dont..

so get passed whatever happens in years past. New year new DC and they will figure out what to do without keyboard gm input's..

so laughable fans around here think they are plugged into what sports franchise is doing and what they should do..

no one here knows anything more then the DC FO wants them to know they funnel it through the media and all the little birds come to the regurgitated information and then it grow's into false narratives with heated debates around these parts..

they are going to run a 3-4 flex scheme and some 4-3 mixed in and who knows maybe some games more 4-3 then 3-4 im sure game plans to who we are facing will dictate schemes,. Most nfl teams today do NOT run one scheme anymore..

I was responding to the OP who worded it as to what they should do with what they have, not what they will do. I know the base will be 3-4, but 70% of the time, according to the new DC they'll be running Nickel. LVE is good, but the injury question is there. Jaylon just doesn't have the instincts. Get past whatever happened in years past? LOL. So you're saying that every player is PERFECT when it's a new season and their performance of previous years is NO indicator of how they might play in the future? That's kind of dumb.

nope stand by get over it last year was last year and i'm betting DQ and the fact that JS and LVE are going to be pushed hard to play better will turn into a better output this year. Competition and jobs on the line but also in scheme that will hopefully put them in better situations.

all this BS about instincts , seriously playing high legal d1 football and a 5th year pro in the nfl has instincts , can play football, and has shown at the very least hes serviceable in the nfl and maybe with some better coaching and inspired to play better he can become better....

just because JS isnt as good as the elite LBs doesnt mean have has no instincts, you know who doesnt have any football instincts? YOU, most of the fans here that who..lmao a pro football payer has plenty of instincts but some are simply better then others..but NONE ??? get the flip out of here you dont make it to the nfl with NO Instinct and dont have 150+ tackles and when comparing his to other LBs ive seen charts hes not that far off from a lot of regulars starters..

that 2020 defense looked like we had no football players, so let get passed 2020 and see what we have this season..

This is the age of specialization.

You put in the LBers that play the best under the circumstances the Cowboys happen to be under.

At the start of the game you want the best balanced LBers, the ones that can perform the best when defending both the pass and the run. If the Cowboys take a strong lead then you know the opponent must pass more so you put in your best pass defending LBers.

On the other hand, if the opponent has a small lead late in the 2nd half thet will try to eat clock so you put in the best run defending LBers.

Also, you may want to rotate your LBers early in the game so you can rest your starters without a significant decrease in talent.

There is plenty of opportunity over a 17 game season for every starting caliber LB to play a significant portion of the game.
