"On paper, they're the team to beat"

I believe the Cowboys have the most Paper Super Bowls of any team on the league.

Even when the Cowboys were good they were favored to win in games they probably shouldn't have been. Which is why they probably have the most playoff losses as the favorite than any other team. People just think they're going to win, until they don't.

I find it quite odd that people are mixing up legit sports terms w/ cliches. Seriously, there's monster of a difference between accepted terminology and a cliche.

I’m old enough to remember back in 1978 when NFL Films dubbed the Cowboys “America’s Team”. Tom Landry hated it, but Tex Schramm loved it. It was accurate then- the Cowboys were clearly the most popular football team in America.

But 43 years later, IMO, it’s not only a tired moniker, I’m not sure it’s still accurate. But that led me to think about some other tired and overused quotes that are commonly said about the Dallas Cowboy and sports in general that are either used too often or just flat goofy.

Here are a few I came up with in no particular order of importance:
  • “America’s Team”
  • “War Daddy”
  • “Cover corner”
  • “Possession receiver”
  • “Who’s going to step up?” (When an injury happens to an important player)
  • “_____ is in the best shape of his life.” (Said every year about some player- true or not)
  • “_____ is having a great camp.” (Said every year about some spare who will either not make the team or never play much)
  • “Hot Boyz” (yuck)
So what are some other tired old cliches we hear too often? Seems like every offseason is full of old cliches.
What say you?

"We'll take it one game at a time." Well, duh. It's not even humanly possible to play more than one game at a time.

Throw him open
It's just the preseason

I have to admit..."throw him open" has meaning to me. You throw it to where the guy is gonna be, not where he is. If you have good rapport with the receivers...you can direct him to an open spot with the pass. It may not be on the route called. The receiver has to ...go get it...beating his man to the ball.

Throw him open. I dig it.

It means don't overthink it. Stay focused.

It's a little bit like....if you have (figuratively) dug yourself a hole...the first step out of it is...stop digging. If you are worried about the hole getting deeper, while you still dig....screwed.

One "game" at a time. I dig it.

Yeah, but on these boards, most use the term incorrectly and don't even understand what it means.

Same as lateral agility, more quick than fast, phone booth quickness, non stop motor, stuff like that. These are quite simply descriptive football terms.

I'm just trying to feed my family, but you're in a negotiations for millions of dollars.

We're taking it one game at a time. As far as I know there is no other way.
If you are playing the Bengals but think about next week's game with The Chiefs....

"Next Year's Champions" was a phrase about the Cowboys that used to bug me before they won a Super Bowl.

Yep. Are you old enough to remember this book from 1969?

"Just go out
Or more appropriately nowadays, "I don't follow things said about me on social media"
Just go out there and give it 110%

They need to run the ball first.

Barring injury . . . .

"He needs a little work."
"Those are things we can fix."
"That's something we need to work on."
"We'll address that this week."
"That's been our biggest problem."
"You can only play the people on your schedule."
"You can expect that when you come up on a team like _____________"
"They played a great game."
"We wish them well going forward."
"We were a little flat coming out."
"It was a good call. I'd call it again in the same situation 100% of the time."

I tend to thnk "cover corner" and "possession receiver" serve a purpose, because it allows someone to have an idea what kind of player a guy is even without having watched him play much. They are still pretty broad terms, so it doesn't give a zoomed in picture, but with "possession receiver" you know it probably refers to a guy who is not a big play, downfield threat, but can still have a lot of value with consistency and helping to keep the chains moving.

What exactly is a "moral victory"? Did the other team have a bunch of immoral characters on it and how is it possible to out immoral the Cowboys? They're the only team with required "immorality clauses" in the contracts.

The dumbest of all time for me is "Hot Boyz". First of all, it just sounds stupid but they weren't even a hot commodity when he tried to sell that. They were more like the "Tepid Tots".

I am now awaiting the team's first musical group "BossManFat and the Hot Boyz".

It strikes me as worse than that. Like a gay porn thing.
