Dont blame him a bit for trying to avoid surgery. My belief has always been if Tyron is 100% it gives us a punchers chance in the playoffs . IMO our season and making the playoffs depends on his health , he is that important .

We flatout dont do well with him injured nobody to pickup the slack for not being able to run or protect your QB . That said the rigors of the NFL push things to limits regularly that are rarely encountered in normal life so I hope its not too much of a stretch to believe this will fix his problems on an NFL level

I have read articles previously that Tyron didn’t want surgery and wanted to try and manage it with PT and other treatments.

Given the risks associated with neck surgery and the fact that his neck health is going to be important to him even after football and trying to enjoy his life.

i can’t blame Tyron for wanting to exhaust all other treatment options prior to getting surgery. To be honest.
As a veteran of many of these, I can say that surgeons I've dealt with always preach the conservative treatments until the degeneration/herniation shows it cannot be treated that way. Once they cut on you there is no going back, unless of course it's back under the knife.

He was wise in exhausting all the treatments before getting surgery. I just hope he can play pain-free and without any issues. He has always been on a team-friendly contract and seems like a really good guy. Not to mention one heck of a left tackle.

I remember when Demarcus Ware missed a few games for the first time ever and all of a sudden ol Steve Jones declared his best football behind him and cut him.

then a season later the cowboys could have gone to a super bowl had they had a Demarcus ware to hit Aaron Rodgers maybe once or twice, you know like th way he dominated the 2015 afc championship game in the second half sending Denver to a championship.

pretty weird how Smith has missed way more time and seems to always have issues yet he is still here but Ware was given no such treatment.

something tells me ol Steve Jones has no idea what he is doing.
Not an apples to apples comparison. Ware was due to have a cap hit over $15M going into 2014, which at the time was ridiculously high. He had the worst year of his career up to that point in 2013. So Dallas saw his play slip and combined with his huge cap hit and made the decision. That's why he was cut.

And the real games haven't began yet. Dont mock anything just yet lol...we all know how quickly things can change in the nfl.He could get hurt in Oxnard for all we know. Right now EVERYONE looks and feels like a Million bucks. I'm cautiously optimistic. I dont think anyone said his playing career is over, I think rational people see how many games he has missed over the last 3 years with the same nagging injuries and are simply asking the right questions and wandering if we should move on from him as a starter. He does have alot of miles on those tires.Hard to fault fans for askin these questions, afterall, he has missed alot of time.

Sure. You make good points. But I still think some people have prematurely put his career in the grave. He has only had one season where he has missed a lot of games. Prior to this past season he played 13 games and or more every year.

that’s all.

It should’ve been obvious some time ago that managing it that way wasn’t working out. Like after the first season he fought it.

You’re right. So Tyron should just have been forced to get surgery he didn’t want then. Got it

I heard the same thing and truthfully for the lay person you'd exhaust all the less invasive treatments 1st. Tyron was given that option and I suspect he was told this will fix you. And it might have if he was an ordinary joe but he was a 300 lb man colliding with other 300lb men who had a headstart 50 times a game. Any progress made with non-surgical treatment is quickly negated. The man had a structural issue ... stenosis in the cervical spine. The nerves were getting crunched because their pathways were too small. Surgically they gave the nerves more room and also stabilized the bone structure. It's been since October and I'd think they'd like to hold off on contact as long as possible to give the bone grafting time to overgrow and build a stronger bony structure. Time = more bone=more structural strength.

I'm excited to see a new and stronger Tron !!!!! The left side should be good! We have the potential to have a 2014 quality OL.

Yeah man I agree. I feel very optimistic about His health now that he has had the surgery.

Maybe he should have had this a year or two ago. But surgery on the back or neck is the absolute LAST resort. You exhaust every other possibility first. The really good surgeons always tell you that.

And so many here FORGET that after he retires he is looking at 40 years or more of living with these decisions.

Some here think a player should destroy his life for the Cowboys.

I disagree.

The only people who were worried about either of the tackles were skeptical fans who have been conditioned to expect the worst.

The team converting each salary to bonus for 2021 should have ended the Rashawn Slater is the savior talk but it didnt.

he took the money. Its on him to get his body the right and fulfill his contract at a high level, not the fault of the Cowboys or fans. If he couldn't live up to it, or if he had his doubts about his body, then he shouldnt play. That said, I hope he has a great year. We clearly put all our eggs in the tyron Smith basket.

I also think we need to keep some things in perspective.

Other than this last season. The most games Tyron ever missed a year was 3.

Tyron also played in all of the cowboys playoff games since joining the cowboys.

When on the field. Tyron is still a top 5 LT. Even when banged up.

Tyrons contract is a steal.

Tyron for 13 games per year plus playoffs, on his relatively cheap deal, is most likely far better than anyone you try to replace him with. Unless you use a top 10 pick on a tackle (which is fine if/when it does need to happen)

In conclusion, there’s zero reason to not give Tyron the chance to come back from this. Especially considering he finally got surgery.
Ive been saying for years. This surgery reminds me of when DLaw had his surgery. Had a huge season the year after once he was healed. Also. The legend Tony Romo had back surgery going into 2014. Once he knocked the rust off he was and should have been the MVP that year.

I had a neck fusion at c6-7 and have spinal stenosis. I know Tyron is an elite athlete, but do WE REALLY think that he wont feel the affects? Speaking only from my own experience over the last 20 years, I can tell you my range of motion and stamina is affected. Just sayin. Now maybe Tyron will be the exception not the rule. Never heard of anyone returning to good as new after a spinal fusion. MAYBE PEYTON MANNING...but its not the norm. Just trying to be cautious here.

Deciding to get surgery especially back surgery is a very tough decision...I do not begrudge him for trying to rehab it and live without surgery.

If you know someone or have personally had back issues that could warrant surgery then you will know how tough the decision is...there is a lot of risk and never guaranteed to be truly fixed

I get he's a professional athlete and thats a fair argument but with my own personal experiences I can't be upset with him trying to avoid surgery
My dad had it and felt relief immediately. I may need it, eventually. I don't begrudge him for it, but if he feels that much better, I'm sure even he wishes he had done it sooner

don't get me wrong, having had this done myself, I can vouch for feeling relief almost instantly. It does make a difference. What I am saying, there is a down side. Range of motion is a big issue after this kind of procedure. Question is, how will it affect his play and his stamina on game day? Im a bit skeptical, just from my own exp.

Those are tough, but I don't think he had fusion, if he did, it'll be hard for him to play his position.
