Anger wasn't given a starters contract for a punter. 1 year deal with minimum gtd. So it's not quite like the Greg Z situation.

Hunter will have plenty of snaps in TC to show the coaches he's the guy. But early on Anger is rightful taking the praise unless he's having 30 yard shanks

Doesn't seem like he has a chance though. To me it should be Niswander's job to lose and then let him lose it if Anger out plays him.

It's fine that people want to think Niswander should somehow be relegated because he has missed OTAs due to what is being reported as a family situation. I don't know what that means but I assume the front office and coaching staff are clued in. But 47 yards per punt last year. Unless Anger can top that he should just be fighting for second. Anger has kicked to that level in the past in his first couple of years that was a long time ago. The last several years he has been a yard less than that.. He's also 6 years older than Niswander. Which means he's probably a little more expensive. We shall see.. I just don't think Fassell needed to come out like this.. but maybe he's playing a little mind game with Niswander to get him out to the facility. I just miss the hell outta Mat McBriar who I could count on to flip the field from any point on the field. Even when we were backed up we almost never saw the other team start in our territory. I hated the heck outta that guy getting hurt. We have not had a top notch punter since.

Stats wise they were very similar
Little things like hang time are very important
I liked what the kid did last year but one advantage with Angar is he kicks off which takes 90 kicks off the leg of you FG kicker

Amen to your point on McBriar. That guy in his prime was money.

Anger last year had 54 punts, 46 yard avg, and a long of 67, 23 kicks were downed inside the 20
Niswander last year had 26 punts, 47 yard avg, and a long of 58, 10 kicks were downed inside the 20

Statistically i'm not seeing much of a difference between the two. Granted punting stats are tough to sort out. Typically punters with bad offenses have the best numbers, because they can sit back and just boom the ball. You punt for a team like KC, typically when you do punt its from mid field. I have no issue with Fossil saying that the vet has the upper hand, especially if he can handle kickoff duties better than Niswander.

Either way we should be better in 2021 than we had to start 2020 at the position.

Watching McBriar punt made me football horny. I almost looked forward to us being backed up because he would invariably uncork at 70 yarder that would put the other team back inside their own 25. The only reason he didn't average over 50 yards per kick was because we had a good offense. He had to work on that running corner kick thing just to keep things interesting. He may have been the best punter I've ever seen.

Yeah.. I guess either guy will be better than a gimpy Chris Jones was last year. But Niswander did excite me last year because he reminded me of McBriar in his ability to just boom one from deep in our own end. In the final analysis I guess that Anger being here and Niswander not he's gotta be given the the nod..

Dallas has not released him and it is up to him to go out and perform. A player can sit and pout about a comment like that or they can get out there and show they are better. I fully expect Niswander will get his chance to compete. Unless Cowboys just cut Niswander before camp he has a chance.
Would not shock me at all if they cut him early......

Yeah i really enjoyed watching Niswander too....i'm just not sure if that was because he performed like a great punter or if I could have looked decent after watching Chris Jones who in 2020 is a shell of what he was in his prime.

For what its worth PFF gave Niswander a 58 grade last year, Anger a 71....Chris Jones a 60? I'm not the instant bash PFF type, but Jones getting a higher grade that Niswander is a head scratcher.

Yeah I loved Matt McBriar.....he had a hell of a leg and his hang time on punts was a thing of beauty. He's my prototype for what I want in a punter. Rarely did he give up bad field position.

Jones with a 42.6 average graded higher than a guy who outkicked him by 5 yards per kick? Maybe he had a really good net average or maybe he pinned the other team a lot? I don't know WTH PFF was watching though because every time I watched Jones I found myself wanting to scan the waiver wire for a new punter.

we talkin bout a punter
June is a wild time for football talk isn't it? Still a couple months away from pre season football, the draft feels like ancient history, and Dak finally has a contract this year. Tough to do the constant Trystan Hill debates or argue about DLaws contract anymore. The punter talk actually feels refreshing in an odd way.

Agree with you on hangtime & kickoffs, plus we don't know if there was any holding issues with Niswander on fgs. Also any chance Anger is good throwing the ball on trick plays?

I don't really like hearing this. Niswander was amazing in his stint last year. Dude boomed the hell outta ball for us.. Declaring Fassell's "guy" the frontrunner at this point seems like maybe we're not really engaging in any real competition. And I don't like it.

Niswander had a 47.2-yard average with a 42 net and 10 punts downed inside the 20. Anger had a 46.4-yard average with a 41.8-yard net and 19 punts inside the 20 (but he played in 16 games to 8 for Niswander), plus he has the better last name.

I'd prefer to keep the younger play (Anger's 32 while Niswander's 26), however, we really don't know if Niswander can duplicate what he did in eight games last year while Anger has a career 46.2 average. Plus, Anger is really good at kicking off, which takes that off Zuerlein's shoulders and allows him to focus on place-kicks, preserving his leg.

If it's close, you've got to go with Anger. If Niswander improves, then that makes the decision a lot more difficult to me.

Maybe Cowboys need real competition at kicker too.

Zeurlein didn't impress much.
