I’m old enough to remember back in 1978 when NFL Films dubbed the Cowboys “America’s Team”. Tom Landry hated it, but Tex Schramm loved it. It was accurate then- the Cowboys were clearly the most popular football team in America.

But 43 years later, IMO, it’s not only a tired moniker, I’m not sure it’s still accurate. But that led me to think about some other tired and overused quotes that are commonly said about the Dallas Cowboy and sports in general that are either used too often or just flat goofy.

Here are a few I came up with in no particular order of importance:
  • “America’s Team”
  • “War Daddy”
  • “Cover corner”
  • “Possession receiver”
  • “Who’s going to step up?” (When an injury happens to an important player)
  • “_____ is in the best shape of his life.” (Said every year about some player- true or not)
  • “_____ is having a great camp.” (Said every year about some spare who will either not make the team or never play much)
  • “Hot Boyz” (yuck)
So what are some other tired old cliches we hear too often? Seems like every offseason is full of old cliches.
What say you?
1A: Sports reporters and sportcasters asking players & coaches in any sport - after qualifying for the playoffs - "Who would you rather play?"
1B: Sports reporters and sportcasters stating when a team in any sport ends a season on a winning streak \ playing well entering the playoffs - "Nobody wants to play this team (first) when the postseason starts -
"They are clicking on a'll cylinders \ are so hot....)

Myth: Dak Prescott is an "average" QB and "average" QB play won't lead to a title.

Even if Dak was average (he's much better than that), here are some quarterbacks that have either won or at least reached a Super Bowl since the turn of the century: Trent Dilfer, Kerry Collins, Brad Johnson, Jake Delhomme, Donovan McNabb, Matt Hasselbeck, Rex Grossman, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Cam Newton, Nick Foles, Jared Goff, and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Won't be too many yellow jackets being worn among that group.

What exactly is a "moral victory"? Did the other team have a bunch of immoral characters on it and how is it possible to out immoral the Cowboys? They're the only team with required "immorality clauses" in the contracts.

The dumbest of all time for me is "Hot Boyz". First of all, it just sounds stupid but they weren't even a hot commodity when he tried to sell that. They were more like the "Tepid Tots".

I am now awaiting the team's first musical group "BossManFat and the Hot Boyz".
Defining what the “moral victory” thing is would be a great question for Jerry at the next “State of the Cowboys” address before TC starts. He seems to like those kind of “wins” more than anyone.

Don't forget Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, and Jeff Hostetler.

no patience to read all the posts but clearly the..."Wnetz (insert whoever here) is proving (in OTA'S) that he is the leader of this franchise, and has looked like a hall of famer"

"off platform throws"
"stuck his foot in the ground"

**I'm always more annoyed by the new cliches that suddenly get picked up and used by everyone.

Not necessarily a cliche' but an annoyingly overused "stat" - QB won/loss record, especially playoff-wise. It's the laziest attempt at analysis, ever.

Team wins playoff game 14-10, despite the QB turning the ball over twice and barely passing for 150 yards. "He's a winner!" (Translation: his defense saved him)

Team loses playoff game 34-31, despite the QB passing for over 300 yards and 3 TDs. "He couldn't lead his team to victory." (Translation: his defense failed him)
