He's only 30.

Three of the five starting O-linemen for the Cowboys last Super Bowl were 34 or older.

For some reason I thought he was older,,,, that's great news if the surgeries work out. Now if Jerry can just get the officials to call off the vendetta they've got on Tyron I'll be really happy.

I remember when Demarcus Ware missed a few games for the first time ever and all of a sudden ol Steve Jones declared his best football behind him and cut him.

then a season later the cowboys could have gone to a super bowl had they had a Demarcus ware to hit Aaron Rodgers maybe once or twice, you know like th way he dominated the 2015 afc championship game in the second half sending Denver to a championship.

pretty weird how Smith has missed way more time and seems to always have issues yet he is still here but Ware was given no such treatment.

something tells me ol Steve Jones has no idea what he is doing.

pretty weird how Garrett groupie Giants fans are here commenting on Cowboys

I understand why people are asking why Smith didn't have this done a long time ago; but I think I know why- it was a major procedure and a season ending one last year at that. And if it went wrong it could have been a career-ending situation.

I think the Cowboys and Smith hoped he could manage the issue and were hoping it would calm down on it's own before opting for the surgery as a last resort. It seems everything turned out great and I hope to see him playing several more years.

On the contrary, if I have just paid out a $160 million for a face of the franchise QB I am not sure my confidence is in taking the risk of a post season surgery success vice trading up for Sewell or taking Slater over Parsons.

I guess it's all in how the risk/reward outcome is perceived.

I thought the loss of starting olinemen to Mahommes and Rodgers further demonstrated their importance.

Not to mention the turnstiles that were Steele and Knight against Washington's starters and even NYG in the second game.

Imo, this team will go only as far as the starting olineman's health holds up.

Regardless of defense.
I mean unless Parsons can play a little swing tackle, lol.

Most back ups are backups for a reason.
Chaz Green wasn't so long ago that I've forgotten.

Let Smith or Collins go down... Or gosh forbid both.

The tune around here will change pretty quick.

So based upon all these reasons I guess my risk/reward opinion favors the drafting of the OL as a backup plan over the hope of post surgery success.

Not sure how dumb that is, but that's just my opinion.
Nah. It isn’t dumb. It’s just your opinion, which is mostly what we all write here. I wasn’t calling anyone dumb, although I did say going OL at pick 10 would have been dumb. It was just an unfortunate way for me to say that I think the OT’s are good for a few more years and that Dallas really needed defensive help.

My bad.

I do think that Smith and Collins are going to be good for a while still. Of course they can get hurt but every team has to hold their breath when it comes to the health of their OT’s.

Collins just had a hip problem, which he got fixed. He’s young and should be fine going forward.

Smith’s neck, which had been bothering him for a few seasons, has finally been corrected. He didn’t want to miss a season to have it fixed, so he tried to work through it. Now it has been fixed, he’s still just 30 and he is maybe the best in the league at LT… so I agree that it wasn’t time to draft his replacement and cast him aside.

I understand your position that you are worried he might get hurt again but I think it is a pretty safe gamble. Not to mention that the free agent swing tackle is better than anything they had last year and Ball is much better than Steele.

And the odds of losing both OT’s like last year are pretty long indeed.

I think the OT’s are going to be fine.

Fair enough. I just don't share the same health optimism regarding either based on players returning from injury and maintaining clean health afterwards. Especially o linemen. I am not the biggest fan of the current OT depth chart. There were multiple quality tackles to be had this year even after Sewell and Slater.

I thought those still available in the second or used on any of the 3rd rd picks would have more strongly benefited the team's roster as well or better than the actual picks that were taken. Personally, I thought Ball was a little overdrafted but again, my opinion.

No worries. Like Haze said, differences of opinion while keeping it respectful makes this a good msg board.

I hope you're right and Smith/Collins hold up for a full year although I personally have my doubts.

Not sure I can be convinced that Philbin's coaching up of the current replacement tackles can accomplish the winning performances needed for postseason success or even any real regular season success if Smith/Collins were out for more than 2 games.

Yeah but those statements had no logic or reasoning, they where just being optimistic.

Making the statement now actually has reasoning because he got the longest rest period he's had since High School and had a corrective surgery.
