I’d be interested in keeping LVE and CW, but reality is both these guys could be in a spot to get starter money. The cowboys have a history of letting guys like this walk and take the comp pick. I could see both being back if they have down years and come cheap.

gallop….I just don’t see room on the roster for him. Take the comp pick and wish him the best of luck.

Schultz probably could go somewhere to compete for a starting gig. His odds of being back probably depend more on how Jarwin does than what Schultz does.

Armstrong you can flip a coin, I have no idea.

Wilson should be back. He’s still not a complete player, but has grown into a high potential player at a position of high need.

How do you see it? Who will remain and who will go from the 2018 draft?
Good write up. But one thing you didn't mention that will play a huge part in the decision on these plays - comp draft picks. Clearly the Cowboys covet them and you better believe that will play a big part in resigning players or letting them walk.

I would want Williams, Gallup and Schultz back. So, like a lot of things, it will come down to money.

Wilson might not even make the team this year. Same with Armstrong. I would say the odds are against those two making the team this year.

Going to lose players if one keeps paying top dollar for mediocre talent who fail to produce and can't carry a team like Dak, Lawrence, Jaylon Smith, and Elliott. Cooper is an above average talent but can't carry a team anywhere.

I'd much rather keep all those players on that list in place of Lawrence, Elliott, and Jaylon Smith.

Dorrance and his long arms will win more football games than Anae and his short arms.

The way I heard it from the board expert (who won't be named) Anae is like the second coming of LT. Before the season is over he likely has "Destroyer of worlds" tattooed on his butt.

Nice write up Bob. I agree probably none of em back. I d be shocked if LVE made it through the year without missing time. Gallup is really the only question but I think they hang on to Cooper. One thing to remember is the 2022 draft is supposed to be deep. Would be easy to replace most of these players on 2022 draftee rookie deals.

The same way some of us would like to see Gallup staying here instead of Cooper, I'd like to see Shultz staying here instead of Jarwin. Why keep Gallup over Cooper and Shultz over Jarwin? As the saying goes, availability is a players best ability.

Plus both Gallup and Shultz should be cheaper than Cooper and Jarwin, without that much of a dropoff.

I think there's a very real chance the Cowboys decide to move on from Cooper and keep Gallup. Lamb's your alpha 1. If Gallup plays well but not too well that teams may view him as a 1 and he becomes too expensive, I think it will make sense to the Cowboys financially to pay Gallup to compliment Lamb long term.

It will just all depend on what happens this year.

If you're sad that this is the last year of the WR trio blame Prescott. He needed 40 million cause he's a selfless team leader and stuff.

I think there’s a fair chance we keep Gallup too, but that would certainly mean Cooper is gone. Which I’m fine with. I have nothing against Cooper. He’s an excellent receiver. He just hasn’t meant that much to this team’s overall success. I still think the FO likes him more than Gallup. I mean ol Jerrah loves him some big name WRs.

Most of our 2018 draft picks as well as WR Amari Cooper will present an interesting set of decisions for the Cowboys going into next offseason.

Why? The rookie deals for LVE, Connor Williams, Michael Gallup, Dalton Schultz, Dorance Armstrong, and Cedric Wilson will all be ending. And Amari Cooper, with his big deal signed in 2020 has a team escape hatch built in after 2021 which may make his future staying here a question between who do we want to keep going forward- Cooper or Gallup? And it appears that in this recent draft, this team has probably drafted its replacements for both LVE and cap heavy Jaylon Smith.

Anyway you look at it, the Cowboys top brass will need to make some tough cap decisions after this season about multiple players.

Let’s examine those players and whether or not they are likely to be kept in 2022:
  • LVE- the only way he’s around next year is if he has an unbelievably productive and healthy season in 2021. His neck injuries have been a problem since college so who knows if he’s ever going to be healthy again for long, but it will take a great season and great heathy to see LVE next year. Prediction: Not back in 2022
  • Connor Williams- for a second round pick who supposedly had some first round talent, Williams has been just ok at best, inconsistent at worst. Has he been good enough to start? Yeah. Good enough to keep with a bigger contract? No way. Prediction: Not back in 2022
  • Michael Gallup- I am a huge Gallup fan. He has been effective every year he’s been here, including having a 1,000 yd season in 2019, with a slight drop off last yr after Dak went down. IMO, the key will depend on whether or not Cedee Lamb develops into the stud he could be. IF SO…I think Cooper’s salary become expendable and Gallup could get signed to a deal less than Cooper. I like Coop but he has been the best WR on bad teams for a long time. Obviously having Coop is not the key to a SB. Prediction: I’m against it, but I think we keep Cooper and let Gallup go after 2021.
  • Dalton Schultz- last year, Schultz emerged as a decent TE option after Blake Jarwin went down. But the team signed Jarwin to a big deal just before the 2020 season and I think the team is committed to him. Prediction: Not back in 2022.
  • Dorrance Armstrong- the former 4th rounder from Kansas has flashed some ability but unless he surprises us in 2021, he’s gone. Prediction: Not back in 2022 or back with a cheap deal.
  • Cedric Wilson- This guy has shown flashes of brilliance followed by long amounts of nothing. He has made plays both as a receiver and as a returner on STs. If he has a good season, he could be earning a bigger deal elsewhere next year. Prediction: possibly back in 2022 if under a team friendly deal.
So looking at the 2018 draft, we could be seeing many if not all of these guys gone after this season. And I will throw in Jaylon Smith as a bonus. Unless he has a breakout great year in 2021, he’s probably gone in 2022.

How do you see it? Who will remain and who will go from the 2018 draft?

My guess is that you're spot on. IMO, any one of these players that don't get an extension this year, probably won't be here in 2022. Because now is when you would normally give players from the 2018 draft an extension.

Oh, we can add Gregory to the list. I'm pretty sure this is his last year too. They probably won't do it, but I'd keep Gregory and Gallup. The cap is going up next year nicely. By the time Lamb comes up for an extension, move on from Cooper.

Yeah this will be a very interesting season for a lot of guys on this roster. For most of that 2018 draft , this is a make or break year as far as sticking around here in the future. It’s become one of the truths about managing a roster the cap era. Players on rookie deals have 4 years to show if they’re worth a bigger investment or not.

LVE...stays.
Williams...stays.
Gallup...is gonna get CRAZY money...THANK THE LORD FOR CEEDEE LAMB.
i hope we can keep him but i doubt it.
Schultz...stays.
Armstrong,Wilson probably go elsewhere.

What do you see as "Crazy money," for Gallup?

I like Cooper, but his salary is insane. Id cut him and sign Gallup to a much smaller deal than Cooper has. I dont see anyone ponying up Cooper type money for Gallup.

Pretty solid draft even if none are kept
I don’t judge drafts by how many you keep, but how many remain players
In a perfect world you’d have the talent to not have to give anyone a second contract. But at the very least you only want to keep elite players and churn the rest

I’m with you on Cooper. He’s a great receiver but he’s too expensive and disappears at some of the most critical moments of games. And I’m a big fan of Gallup. He’s proven so far to be the best pick of the 2018 draft.

I don’t know what kind of dollar range Gallup will fall within after this season. Much of it will depend on what kind of season he has. If he has another 1,000 yd season (like 2019) with over 6 tds, he’s going to garner big money FA offers. It will be a nice problem to face. But I would think he would cost less than Cooper but the market is a year to year thing.

Gallup has it all in front of him if he wants to be seen as a big time receiver in this league.

I think the question Gallup has to prove to other teams around the league........has he developed into a A-1 receiver worthy of top $$$ or is he a solid #2 guy. I honestly think we can keep with #2 type money.

We'll find out when he's a free agent after this season. Because if Gallup was willing to take #2 money, Dallas probably would have extended him already. They still might. The season hasn't started yet.
