In my opinion hope is somewhat fact based and tempered. Hope is a good thing. Hype is different. Hype is either pumping up something that isn’t there or overselling something.

Personally I can’t stand Hype. Just produce and you don’t need hype.

Did anyone have to hype Barry Sanders? Everyone just knew the guy was awesome.

Early hype is almost all BS.

True, to a great extent. Too often, hype is BS with no pads and in shorts. It's best to wait for TC and for live games to find the truth.

Nope it is a bunch of noise like several years of "Dallas Cowboys are superbowl contenders" never went with that narrative.

As a Diehard Cowboys fan since the early '70s, I've learned to not trust the Jones boy's propaganda machine. Thanks to the internet and social media, I can collect enough information outside the influence of the Jones boys to discern where to set my expectations from year to year. I do not enjoy the hype but I do enjoy the positive promotion of my team when it is deserved. I enjoy the ability to know the difference as well.

We all know the NFL is a business first, and a sport second. I enjoy football very much, especially the Cowboys. But I have become increasingly weary of all the hype and hoopla that surrounds my favorite team, especially this time of year.

Here’s a typical definition of HYPE: to promote or publicize (a product or idea) intensively, often exaggerating its importance.

So hype in regard to the Cowboys can be to intensively publicize (often exaggerating) how good the product is going to be in advance of it happening. That sounds like the last quarter century to me. And by the way, I have no problem with any fan who does buy the hype.

Do I enjoy “Cowboys hype”? Honestly, sometimes I do. Sometimes the fan in me wants to believe every good possibility about a certain player or the team as a whole. Other times, especially the last decade, I get sick of all the hype from the leadership of this franchise that hasn’t come close to living up to the “secret sauce” comments about how good we are going to be. Honestly, the Jones boys will have to earn my trust with results on the field not their typical verbal hype.

Am I excited about the upcoming season? Yes. Do I have some hope? Yes. Do I believe all the stuff being said about how good we are going to be? I will believe it when it happens. Not before.

Hype is fine if it is backed up once in a while. But if you fall for the same trick every year eventually you have to feel stupid when they try the same trick on you again and again.

I like to be where I think things are realistic. Any time the Cowboys claim they are ready to contend for a Super Bowl I simply imagine a game between the Cowboys and a top NFL team, like the Chiefs, and I ask myself who would win and how. That grounds me when it comes to the Cowboys. The problem is, not so much for us but for Jerry, if they believe their own BS they will never takes the steps necessary to improve. "We like our guys" does not sound like they know what they need to do.

And btw, I have felt the Cowboys had the talent to contend a number of times over the last 25 years. But something holds them back. It could be culture or coaching, or a combination of the two.

There are several different forms of hype.

There is the hype that the sports talking heads and TV nets provide to create and maintain interest in the most polarized team in any sport, also the most followed. I accept and understand the need for that.

Then there's the self generated hype created by Booger & Son like him saying Jaylon Smith is the cornerstone of the defense while he was the most criticized player on the most criticized defense in the league. Cornerstone is a positive word used in a negative situation.

My problem with Booger is not that he chooses to be his own GM but that he chooses to run his mouth. No GM in any sport does this and he does it to excess. That is why I do not like him. No owner in the history of sports has tried to sell himself as the face of the franchise, not even Crazy Al or Steinbrenner. He's actually hyping himself.

There is also a reverse effect to the hype. Look at how many times you've seen posters say "I'm not buying" and multiply that for the general public. Somehow, his hype and spinning makes some feel like if they have belief, faith or hope, they're being sold elixir by some old coot off the back of a wagon. Bad enough to be disappointed but they don't want to feel foolish on top of that.

I made the conscious decision years ago that if I were to continue as a fan of this team, I had to put these spinners on ignore. I avoid Booger and only know what he says when it is repeated here. And I know, everything he says will be repeated here but that also includes the really stupid things he says and there is a balance to that.

However, there is one side benefit, and I agree it is an odd one for a fan, to all of his hype. When they lose, I can still be compensated by his reaction to losses. The look on his face is almost as good as a win.

I've been accused of letting him live rent free in my head but away from here, he never crosses my mind.

dont like the hype as it pertains to the cowboys always being superbowl contendors when they really arent....

but i do love the hype leading up to the games, its actually as much fun for me as watching the games are....kinda hard to explain but i really enjoy the week leading up to the game thinking through the possiblities and how it could go.

No, I don’t buy into it anymore. I will use my eyes to make sound judgements.

@Bobhaze The ‘hype’ I am seeing is almost exclusively coming from the media, players like Lamb, and some posters here like @Rockport .The only ‘hype’ recently from the office is how good Dak is and why he deserves $40M/year.

I can’t blame the front office for hyping anything when they do. What some call hype, others call building excitement, and others call boldfaced lies. We all hype things in life. Parents hype family picnics and vacations and holidays and stuff. Hey kids, the beach is going to be ‘crowded and hot and you’ll get sunburnt and there are jellyfish, sharks and scorpions’ probably will have the kids playing video games in the hotel.

The hype can be fun, the hype can be nauseating. The hype is necessary at times. So is questioning the hype at times. We are at the pre-vacation hype is good time. Hype-away.

I remember Dak hyping during the 2019 season. Kept telling everyone to stay tuned and great things are coming during the season even when we all knew he was blowing smoke. That was nauseating hype. That was the time to call players out, including himself, and right the ship.
How have I been hyping the team? Being positive isn't hyping.

Hype is ok, but I'm not buying it.

I have to see it first. Until they prove otherwise, they are a 8-9 win team in my eyes.

Not interested in talk. I'm only interested in results

Don't care for hype. Tends to make my expectations for the team too high, and if they don't follow through I'm more disappointed than if the expectations were lower.

And if they do better than they were supposed to, then it's a greater high.

Yeah I'm weird, you don't have to say it....
