Is it realistic to think we can keep Gallup after this year?

They made a mistake by not starting the hunt for a trade for Gallup on the day Dak went down. Gallup had a big game, with late game heroics, with a backup QB. That game was Peak Gallup. At that time, teams could still think of Gallup as a #1, based on 2019, and that strong game. Since then, he was passed up on the roster by Lamb, and his production sagged.

Gallup is a quality #2 now. To some. But I'm always very skeptical of #2s opposite a very strong #1, and good supporting skill players. Harper. Terrance. The production is more indicative of an easy row to hoe than personal talent. I don't buy into those guys.

No, that wouldn't have happened. That's a tanking decision. Because Dalton looked good I'm sure they were thinking they could still salvage the season and look brilliant for signing Dalton. I kinda wished they had because it could have paid off greatly if we wound up in the Dolphins spot and SF wanted to trade that ransom for the swap.

As for the OP's question, I think I'd like to see if Cooper's injuries will impact him during the season again. If so, maybe you keep Gallup for being consistent and available versus rolling more dice with Cooper. You might also want to watch Lamb for any sophomore slump. So if I'm the front office, I'd certainly stay in Gallup's ear about being interested.

We have him for 2021 and then we'll end up with third round comp pick for him. Great value for that draft pick selection.

After '21...Gallups Away.

Going into the 2021 season, the Cowboys have what could be considered “a good problem”. We arguably have one of the top 3 WR combos in the NFL- Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and Cedee Lamb. And with Michael Gallup going into the final year of his rookie deal, he has every incentive to have a great year.

In fact, could 2021 see the Cowboys have three 1,000 yard receivers? It’s not out of the question though it hasn’t happened in 13 years. The Cardinals in 2008 were the last NFL team to have three 1,000-yard receivers. That season Larry Fitzgerald (1,431), Anquan Boldin (1,038) and Steve Breaston (1,006) did it. And it’s interesting that the Cards went to the Super Bowl that year.

But back to Michael Gallup. Is it realistic to think the Cowboys can afford to keep him, assuming he has a typical year for him? I doubt it- UNLESS- they decide to release Amari Cooper and his $20 million a yr contract, which I think is a strong possibility. Barring injury, if Gallup has the kind of year he has typically had or better, he’s going to garner a big deal.

Let’s look at some stat numbers on Gallup and how he compares:
  • In 3 seasons as a Cowboy, Gallup has averaged 52 receptions for 819 yards, and 4 TDs.
  • In 3 seasons, Gallup averages a very impressive 15.6 yards per reception. (Compare that to Amari Cooper’s career avg of 13.8 per reception- 13.5 since he’s been in Dallas.
  • In 3 seasons, Gallup averages a very respectable 53 yards per game. (The 7 years Cole Beasley was in Dallas, he avg about 32 yards per game)
  • In 2019, Gallup’s yards per target was a very respectable 9.8. (About what Coop’s was in 2019)
Here’s where I’m going with all this info:
  • In 2021, If Michael Gallup has even an average year for him, IMO he will be in big demand on the NFL FA open market.
  • Look at the money Cole Beasley got in Buffalo with numbers considerably lower than Gallup’s. Beasley signed a 4 year, $29 mil contract with Buffalo, including a $6 million signing bonus, $14.4 million guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $7.25 mil. Gallup will certainly garner a lot more than that.
  • Look at what former Lion WR Kenny Golladay got from NYG this year- 4 yrs, $72 million, avg $18 mil a season. His stats are very similar to Gallup.
CONCLUSION: If Michael Gallup has a typical year or something better (and I think he will) He’s not going to want to sign a “team friendly” deal here. Period. The only way Michael Gallup is here next year is if Amari Cooper is not and the Cowboys pay him market value.

As stated earlier- this is a “good problem” for the Cowboys.

Salary cap is going up, and if enough rookies replaces some of the older veterans then there will be room to keep Gallup along with Cooper & CD.

I agree with others, there is minimal chance that a healthy Gallup re-signs here in Dallas with Cooper also still here. The salary cap just isn't going to let it happen.

It's most likely Gallup walks, but I wouldn't entirely rule out trading Cooper and re-signing Gallup. A lot of things would have to happen, particularly Gallup matching or outperforming Cooper.

Personally, I think this is Cooper's last year in Dallas. I believe we can cut him next year and save a ton on the cap with not much dead money. I'd be cool with trading him also but Gallup is younger and the future.

Coop is great btw, we just cant keep both.

They would have to trade Cooper or Lamb. They wanted to keep Alvin Harper but couldn't.

Some think he's not a #1 but he could be for some teams and why would he want to cut the Cowboys a deal?

I think the Cowboys are making a mistake by not sampling the market for Gallup the rest of this season. Get something for him.

Agreed.....shoule look to see what you possibly get for him. At worst, a conditional pick will happen if Gallup leaves via FA

What surprised me about the WR FA market this offseason was seeing former Lions WR Kenny Golladay get 4 yrs for $72 mil from the midgets. That’s $18 mil a season. And he’s not as good as Gallup IMO. If Gallup has a good year, I expect him to garner 4 yrs for $20 mil….at least. That’s current Cooper money.

Gallup will continue to be a cowboy, cooper will be traded or contract expires. I see Lamb at 1 and Gallup continues as 2.

That simply comes down to Gallup and what is in his head.

I think that ties in directly with the Cowboy's plans for Cooper.

Every season Cooper seems hobbled but then you see big numbers at the end of the season. He truly is a great WR that generally falls under the radar when discussing great WR's. However, he isn't getting any younger although I have noticed that many great WR's drafted in the top five have very long careers.

Gallup would have to acknowledge that he is the 2nd receiver here in Dallas with or without Cooper. I suspect Cee Dee is going to blow the lid off a great many Cowboys single season receiving records. he will be given the opportunity and he certainly has the quarterback.

They could try to extend him but I wouldn't expect him to be happy with Jerry's offer. I could be wrong for one simple reason. Jerry just loves him some WR. I think it's the position that he mostly identifies with, flashy, dynamic, big play. If you look at Jerry's history when it comes to WR's and what he is willing to do, well, anything is possible.

Cooper turns 27 tomorrow. Not all that old, and his skill set does seem like the type that could age well (vs. say Dez Bryant). That said, he’ll always be older than Gallup—I’d put money on that!

It's a trade off move that everyone would have understood and many advocated tanking besides. Life is full of tradeoffs.

It would have been a move to improve the team both short term and long term if we got a quality starting defender in trade.

Unless he has 100 catches, 1500 yards and 15+ TDs, I think it IS realistic. If he does have that break-out year then someone will break the bank to get him. But with all the other weapons I just don't see that happening. I see him getting 65-80 catches, 800-1000 yards and 8-10 TDs.

The cap will go up, Jaylon will probably be released clearing up more money, plus restructuring other contracts, we should be good to sign him if he truly loves playing for America's Team.
