Cowboys Should Trade for CB Stephon Gilmore, NE

I know we have a glutton at CB at the moment, but not a solid option (that we currently know of) opposite Diggs. Gilmore would instantly solidify our starting CB’s … and NE wants to shop him. He should have at least 2 good years left in him. And he is a MUCH better option than Richard Sherman. I was pushing for this before the draft and so was Mike Fisher — and he still is.

On another note, there is something about Kelvin Joseph that I just don’t trust yet. Can’t put my finger on it, but I wouldn’t put too much hope in him at the moment. He has the skill set, but only time will tell if he has the mental focus needed for us to trust him completely.

With Gilmore, here’s how I would see our secondary shaping up:
  • S. Gilmore (CB)
  • T. Diggs (CB)
  • A. Brown (CB)
  • J. Lewis (CB)
  • CJ Goodwin (Special teams)
  • N. Wright (CB)
  • K. Joseph (CB)
  • I. Mukuamu (S)
  • D. Wilson (S)
  • D. Kazee (S)
I know I only have 3 safeties listed, but don’t forget - Keanu Neal could play safety in a pinch.

I would do it for a 4th rounder or lower only. Read somewhere Gilmore may have a chronic hip issue?

You willing to extend a 30+ cornerback top cornerback money. He is not playing for the contract he has with the Patriots. I would love to have him for next season with Diggs but beyond next year, no way.

I honestly think that the Patriots would expect more for Gilmore than what we'd be willing to expend for him. We are in a very shaky situation in terms of cap dollars and Stephen will likely be unwilling to allow NE a draft pick to please them. I think we'll be likely to rock along with what we have, as much as I'd like to add another veteran talent at CB. With a little luck, let's hope our youngsters work out well for us.

If the Pats want to trade him, ehhhh.

I mean, sometimes it works out like Jones in Arizona and the GOAT in Tampa(release) but it feels like as soon as most players leave NE it's either cause they were system players or NE knew they were declining.

Rather go with Howard from Miami if we were in the market for an AFCE corner that's in a holdout.

As I said:
”I know we have a glutton at CB at the moment, but not a solid option (that we currently know of) opposite Diggs. Gilmore would instantly solidify our starting CB’s…”

while i get what you are saying, I’d personally rather go with the young guys and let the defense build cohesion as a young hungry group than being in a 30 plus cb which is going to be expensive.

Eh, I don't see the point in going defense-heavy in the draft just to panic and scramble and overpay to bring in aging vets to block the kids' paths to playing. The only reason we feel so positive about Diggs today is because we didn't hide him on the sidelines last year; we played him and let him take his lumps and learn. We should do that with as many guys in the 2021 draft class as we can manage, too.

I'd rather get the show on the road and play the kids.

We have our generic veteran options we can throw out there if the kids are getting absolutely murdered and we need to stop the bleeding. That's all Gilmore would be worth to us anyway if we're being honest, a generic veteran option. He'll be much worse and less valuable here than he was in New England. Worse front seven in front of him, worse secondary mates surrounding him, worse coaching staff making the calls. But we're living in this fantasy where you think we're gonna take the Patriots for a ride in a trade because we know better than Belichick when it comes to assessing a defensive player of his? Not me. If we trade for an expensive defensive vet from New England, I fully expect us to get took.

I disagree with the trade. Hope they outright released somebody. I don’t want to give any of my players away we need them

This isn’t Madden. They just drafted 2 or 3 CB’s and signed a couple S’s in free agency.

Can we at least let our draft picks have a training camp to see if they can start in this league before we relegate them to the bench in favor of an aging veteran?
I wouldn't trade for Gilmore, but rookie CBs are never good.

None of them are likely to start anyway.

Gilmore had a great 2019. 6 interceptions.
But his last few years he's in the 1-2 range mostly.
While I would agree that he'd be an upgrade over most of the Cowboys' current cornerbacks, that'd be in the short term, he'll be 31 years old shortly after the season starts, with the plethora of younger cornerbacks as well as other players we now have, I'd just prefer to build on what we have...

Ne isn't letting I'm go for nothing, and I don't want to pay an aging, unhappy veteran.

The second part is the most important here. He’s holding out being he wants to be paid like a defensive MVP should. If you traded for and signed Gilmore, you’d have…

a top 5 paid RB
A top 5 paid WR
A top 5 paid Guard
A top 5 paid quarterback
A top 5 paid defensive end
A top 5 paid interior linebacker
And now a top 5 paid cornerback

At some point this is going to carve into your ability to build depth around the team. Dallas may be able to technically afford him, but they can’t really afford to do it. Know what I mean?

Maybe it would make sense if this was the 2022-23 season and the cap has gone way up with a new TV contract, and a much bigger cap. But we're not in that situation...
