I did not expect Basham to win this so convincingly. That career high 3.5 sacks last year with the Jets must have really impressed people.
The question is who will be the lead guy coming off the bench. I'm thinking Basham was signed for just that role. Counting sacks doesn't determine much. He was from a podunk U, and had a long way to go. He may be best suited for a backup/wave rusher.

What a terrible list to choose from.

It's probably fair to say all of them are "to be determined" types of prospects but to me . . .
Gholston is the closest to being legit. He's unproven as a pro, however, so there's that, too.
Basham does appear to have possibilities as well, although, the proof is yet to be submitted. o_O
There's also the question about if Bradlee Anae will even be given the chance to show his wares.

This notion that guys dont get a chance to show what they can do is nonsense. If they dont play its because they havent shown enough to get a chance to play. How many sacks did Gholston have last year? I dont see him as a pass rushing DE.

Call it nonsense if it suits you but Anae hasn't been afforded enough reps to prove himself in the past, according to many witnesses. Hopefully it won't continue in TC and the preseason games. Gholston will likely be judged by what he does in camp, since he's new in Dallas. Hopefully, so will Anae. They're all subject to the Dallas coaches' scrutiny now. The Cowboys' coaches will surely judge them as they see fit, regardless of what we think.

You don't get offered reps you earn reps. So he is self entitled to equal reps? If Anae is kicking but in practices and preseason games then he will get more reps. If not, then he probably wont play much. Thats pretty much the way it goes.

I'm surprised only one guy thinks we'll end up bringing someone in later. This isn't exactly a quality list of options.

Of course. However, counting sacks as the sole evaluation tool is quite possibly inaccurate.

Yeah this is what you say when you have a bunch of guys who can't get to the QB.
Or when you have a guy who is quite disruptive and makes it possible for others to make plays.

He's a backup.

We brought Basham in to be the third guy and gave him a two-year deal. He's our someone.

Last year, we took a shot on Aldon Smith because Gregory was suspended and we didn't know what we could expect from him. This year, we plan to have both Gregory and Lawrence out there in starting roles, so we went after a rotation guy in Basham.

I'm not sure exactly was expected by fans. What were we supposed to get at this position since we weren't looking for a starter? I like the Basham signing and think he'll be a good piece of the rotation, and he'll make it where we are not forced to put Anae, Golston, etc., on the field if they can't earn playing time ahead of him and are not forced to use Armstrong as our third DE otherwise.

Who are you talking about?

What a weird conversation. First he tells me what my own question meant and now apparently one of our stiff backups is actually quite disruptive.

Yeah I like it too. There's nothing more comforting than to know if either DE goes down we got a guy with nearly 8 sacks in 5 years waiting in the wings.

You think we should sign Richard Sherman or maybe trade for Stephon Gilmore?

I understand how it works. I don't doubt that Anae has had chances in the past that we haven't heard about. Perhaps we'll see what happens with him in TC and the preseason games to come. I've heard nothing about Anae complaining, though. It's more about the staff being secretive that bothered some of the media and fans, especially concerning the defensive team last year.

The 2020 staff was surely adverse to say things that could be viewed as unfounded criticism. We'll see how it goes in TC and the preseason, assuming the defensive staff allows them the exposure that was missing by many of our young players last year. Missing out on the preseason exposure was hard on the young players like Anae in 2020. Nolan went pretty much by who had been established in the past.

I polled for Armstrong, only because man do have some long arms and we know how important those vital intangibles are.
On a serious list... where do you place Anae and Rondell Carter at this point and thats why its very difficult unless you own one of those crazy 8 Balls from the 70s or whatever time that you shook up and it would tell you relevant info..lol
Golston and lets not forget about Azur Kamara, good ole Azur that gets zero love.

Last update on Anae I remember was that he was taking arm pulling and stretching exercises, and has progressed to the point where his middle finger now hangs around the ankle area.

Dont forget that they just took Gholston in the 3rd round as a DE and the new staff is going to want to see what he can do. They also signed Basham to a 2 year deal. Anae is competing with both those guys for the backup DE positions. Gholston I see probably playing behind lawrence. Basham probably, Anae, Armstrong competing behind Gregory in the 4-3 alignments.
