What if 3-4 defense struggles

You are always onto the truthful trail...hoooah, my friend.

To me, this will be the cruxt to degree of change on the defensive line:

There’s lots to talk about ...at defensive tackle. Free agents Brent Urban and Carlos Watkins, plus rookies Osa Odhigizuwa and Quinton Bohanaa, are joining the mix with returning prospects Trysten Hill and Neville Gallimore. It’s doubtful all six will make the team and how the snaps will be divided between the survivors is also hard to predict. This is about as wide-open as it gets for a position battle.

Two current roster players; two veteran free agents; and two drafted tackles

8 days until Training Camp...I'll be watching, for sure.

As to the defensive ends, there are two starters already: Randy Gregory and Demarcus Lawrence. All backups/rotational players are speculative going into camp.

This has to be seen and followed as well:

Quinn has an updated yet simple scheme that should allow these defenders to be in a position to make a play. It is up to the players themselves to execute.

We will shortly see both directions and player involvements developing. Success is being placed upon the players, where it belongs.

The complete picture for defensive line change, is this:

the additions of Brent Urban, Tarell Basham, and Carlos Watkins in free agency and using the draft for Osa Odighizuwa, Chauncey Golston and Quinton Bohanna.

Right now, this may be a key element:

Gallimore grew into his role as so did his confidence. The young man understands the Cowboys need a high level player at the 3-technique that can be disruptive and do so at a consistent level moving forward. He may also see playing time at the 5-technique when defensive coordinator Dan Quinn calls in three-down-lineman fronts. Having that position flex and the ability to do many roles will be key for not only his longevity but for the teams overall defensive success. The Cowboys as an organization have struggled to find that player in years past and Gallimore has an opportunity to take hold of that position going forward.

The addition of Dan Quinn and a normal offseason program can’t be overstated as well. Adding Quinn as the defensive coordinator and this year’s team having a full, somewhat normal offseason will allow for Gallimore to develop and grow within this system. Gallimore was not afforded that opportunity with Mike Nolan last year and it showed as the product on the field for the defense was not good. The play became increasingly better as the year progressed for Gallimore, and it makes you wonder just how quickly he may have flashed if given a proper offseason and training camp last year.

This is what we look for in Gallimore:

As you look over Gallimore’s 2020 campaign, his stats will be analyzed. Many people look at the numbers to determine a players success, and many will look at the lack of sack production (.5 sack total from last season) and rightfully suggest that will need to improve. However in the same breathe he was able to produce 12 quarterback pressures and four tackles for loss. Gallimore’s presence moving forward will be graded by much more than the stat sheet. It’s going to be the things seen on film that won’t garner much statistical notation, but will be vital to the defenses success. Gallimore will need to be able to win at the point of attack, occupy space and blocks allowing for easier reads, and opportunities for his teammates around him. He will need to be committed to doing the dirty work in the interior while also providing a consistent pass rush.

No a fan of firing HC mid season. I expect McCarthy to have his team ready for the season and at the end of the year you evaluate where this team is

Thats Gus Bradley’s base D. Quinn was baby sitting Gus’s D in Seattle; what he had his d coordinators do in Atlanta is closer to his preferred style, as is the case with all def-minded head coaches.

I don't agree. Much of this stuff probably pre-dates Seattle, if you dig deep into origins. There is an interesting blitzology article that traces elements of the Pete Carroll fronts to the 2007 USC playbook. It becomes important in the historical sense because Pete's amendments to the 4-3 under in the NFL are well documented. A lot harder to dig into SoCal coaching talks than it is to trace Bob Condotta articles in the Seattle Times. As far as DQ being involved, he was the one who switched a 320 pound Red Bryant from 3T to big end, and that's what he's given so much credit for.

As far as people who would know, as opposed to all these sudden "experts" who never watched a Falcons game before 2020 unless Dallas was playing them, I actually live in the Atlanta area and I can ask Pudge/Falcfans about all this. To be plain, I don't recall Atlanta mediots talking about the Atlanta 3-4. Next question: if Atlanta is running a 3-4, what was Grady Jarrett's final position in DQ's fronts? AFAICR, it's 3T. There is no 3T in a 3-4.

They can run a 4-3 and not have a base defense close to Seattle. I wasn’t saying he ran a 3-4 in Atlanta

Last year Mike McCarthy was adamant on playing 3-4 knowing he didn’t have the time, coaches & players to do it and still wants to continue go down this road.

Dan Quinn’s success came under 4-3 defense & in Atl SB run it was 4-3 majority of the time.

My question is would you get rid of McCarthy if the defense struggles for the first quarter of the season like last year and promote Kellen Moore as the HC?

3-4 or 4-3 is irrelevant. All teams do both.

Your assertion is testable. In the Seattle fronts, the big end always moves to the strong side of the formation and the Leo (Vic Beasley for most of DQs seasons) would be moving to the
weak side of the formation. Just look for that pattern on 1st and 10 in older ATL video.
