Frankly it probably says more about McGovern than anything else. Really disappointed that McGovern hasn't been able to lock down a starting spot. I thought he was going to be a stud.
I still say McGovern is the better player.

You know as well as I do that once you're annointed in Dallas, it's nearly impossible to lose your job.

Williams is an enigma IMO. He doesnt pass the eye test for me, yet he generally ends up with high PFF grades.

Even if Williams turns in a legit Pro Bowl season, this is exactly the case where you have a capable backup and you use that money elsewhere.

This is not a big deal. The Cowboys need a backup center and they are trying Williams out to see if he can do it. They need depth at the position.

OTAs, Training Camp,..pre-season is the perfect time to break players into new, different or swing positions.
Why not use this length of time to have several optional swing players at several positions ?
But it's about what players the coaches best see fit in these possible swing positions.

- Philibin doesn't want to see Williams as a emergency swing tackle but rather inside as an option at center
- Philibin doesn't want to see McGovern as an emergency swing center, despite some college center experience, so he's strictly gonna be a pure OG under Philibin.

- But what if Williams himself gets hurt ?
Who then is next up to be the emergency backup center ? .. 7th round draftee rookie Matt Farniok - who has only played center in one lone game at Nebraska ?

Cowboys will need to have someone ready to backup at Center, they seem unlikely to resign Looney so someone has to get reps to backup Biadasz

what i do like with not re-signing Looney is a club that not only investing in their young draft picks on the OL unit, but they are not afraid to play their young guys.
But i admit that i instantly thought McGovern was the front runner as a swing center than Williams who has never played center in a game before.

Broaddus speculation is Williams at C and McGovern at LG. Seems to me that is the plan if Biadasz goes down

Throughout the offseason for the Cowboys, starting Guard Connor Williams has been getting some looks at center. What does this mean for projected starter Tyler Biadasz and could a change be brewing at the position for 2021?

Williams saw reps at center came during the spring practices and again during these first few days of training camp. But according to Mike McCarthy, Connor’s only being evaluated as a potential backup.

MM said he likes for his guards to learn how to play center. They already know the line calls and just need to learn how to snap the ball. This is not a slight against Biadsaze but just good coaching.

Even with lack of experience at center from starter Biasdasz or backup Williams, I still have confidence in the interior oline doing their job.

I do not have this same confidence in the backup tackles.
