Tony Romo on early broadcasting work: 'It was so boring...this guy needs to stop doing this right now'

Screen-Shot-2021-09-12-at-12.43.47-PM.png

Tony Romo stopped by the SI Media Podcast to discuss his early broadcasting work, which made him say "I am the worst announcer ever. I am so boring."

Tony Romo went from NFL quarterback to NFL announcing wunderkind pretty quickly in 2019. His seemingly prescient ability to predict plays right before they happened made him an immediate star for CBS and his continued ability to wow viewers made him an extremely hot commodity when his contract was up soon after (in spite of the detractors). It was no surprise when CBS re-signed him and made Romo the highest-paid TV analyst in early 2020.

All of which is to say that Romo might have made it look very easy to get where he is today. However, during a recent appearance on the SI Media Podcast with Jimmy Traina, Romo admitted that his early broadcasting work left a whole lot to be desired.

He did it again last night. Chiefs lined up at about the three and tiny days....ah, this is gonna be a trick play. It was and when Nance asked him what he saw that allowed him to know, Tony totally avoided answering the question saying he could see that lineman eyes got real big. I think maybe teams complained he was giving away their secrets by doing what he was doing. Lol

He, Aikman and the other color guys are all privy to practice and they see some things they are not supposed to divulge during the broadcast and I thought he had dialed that back because it was rumored some coaches were not happy with it when he first started doing that.

The thing about it is all of these ex QB's could do that if they thought that was the job because they know what the offenses run out of certain formations. The other color guys see their job as to report on it after the fact not prior to and that doesn't appeal to me when he does that. Plus he has a horrible broadcast voice and has still not learned how to project.

I never like Tony from the beginning. I enjoy calling the game myself I don’t need him doing it for me

It's funny....there are just some people that can never give Romo credit for anything.
It's comical really.

But whatever....free country (and forum) as they say

Well, I was a Romo defender when he played so I did give him credit but I also saw the warts.

From a purely broadcast perspective, and I spent 25 years in that, he is terrible. He's off the mic and still mumbles and has drop off in his voice with little projection.

I don't know if they've even worked with him but if the viewer has to turn up the volume to hear him over the ambient noise, he needs work on mic presence and projecting.

That's what surprised fans about Aikman when he did so well when he went into broadcasting because his natural voice and projection were not what he used to cut through. He learned voice animation and projection to help create energy. Just look at the difference when Aikman is interviewed and when he's doing his color gig. Romo is the same in both and it's boring but that's just my opinion but the only one I really care about on this subject because it is purely subjective.

I like Romo as a person and I liked him as the QB, but I didn't overlook the mistakes he made but I did understand most of them because he was trying to carry the team.

Tony got his HUGE payday as an announcer. So now he can relax and coast along. :muttley:

if you call the game yourself, then you have the volume off. How do you even know what Romo is saying? Or do you ‘call the game yourself’ by talking over everybody else? I bet watching a game with you is SO much fun.

Why do I have to have the volume off. I can see what the defense is going to do.Yes I watch the cowboy games by myself for 60 years now. I don’t even watch the Super Bowl with other people. I find it truly enjoyable. I don’t have to put up with people that don’t know what they’re talking about And then I go out Monday morning and train with my two times Super Bowl winning winning back friend

Tony's deal with Corona and the whole beach theme is world class trolling for criticism from 2007. The only way to make it better would be a commercial with him and Witten in it.
There was a joke in one of those commercials where he said "catch? If it were up to me, they'd all be catches."

It was hilarious but heartbreaking.
