SAN DIEGO – It’s a little known fact that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones almost bought the Chargers.

Decades ago, Jones threw his hat in the ring to purchase the San Diego Chargers.

FOX 5 asked Jones what the Chargers would be like today if he had bought them. Jones would not speculate on “what ifs,” but said for sure he would have been a very active owner has he has been with the Cowboys.

I wonder who might have purchased the Cowboys if he had gone with the Chargers?

I would sacrifice those 3 Super Bowl wins in the 90s if it meant Jerruh buying the Chargers instead. It’s at least possible that a different owner sets the team up for long term success and isn’t just a flash in the pan narcissist. Then again, those 90s teams left a huge impression on me as a child and made me into a fan for life. This is confusing.

The others bidding against him were then-Cowboys minority owner Ed Smith Jr., Mavericks owner Donald Carter, Lakers owner Jerry Buss and an unidentified Japanese businessman.

Needless to say, none of them would have been nearly the meddler Jones has been, more often than not, to the product on the field's detriment.

Smith was the first to get in line and had Tex Schramm and the coaching staff, namely Landry, in his sights. Makes an interesting What If.

Carter seemed rather innocuous.

Buss was extremely successful with both the NBA and WNBA by being a businessman first and a pretend coach never.

I have no idea about the Japanese person.

Jerry Buss or Donald Carter would have been interesting.

Buss would likely have gotten us to the same level Jones did if you see how he ran the Lakers.

The biggest thing here is Jones' decision to hire Coach Johnson. Interestingly enough, Johnson was already being rumored to Dallas even before Jones bought the team.

I know I'm in the minority, but I actually like the Cowboys owner. Only twice has he aggravated me. The Emmitt Smith problem. The Jimmy Johnson problem. One was corrected, the other not so much. Other than that not much else. He makes mistakes, yes. IMO it's mainly hiring coaches. He's hired one good coach since Johnson, Parcells. This one remains to be seen.

Buss runs a circus too!
Sounds like back room cigar smoke involved Jones and Johnson long before it was announced.

I wish the only things Jones has done that aggravated me were the Smith contract and the Johnson split.
