Bones Fassel is the only coach that isn’t joking when they talk about the importance of special teams and actually buys into the importance of it like some of our fans on here.

The job on special teams is really easy.

1. Make your kicks.

2. Punt it high and far.

3. Don’t let the return game screw it up for your offense.

That includes things like running into the kicker/punter & not returning kicks because you know 9 times out of 10 you won’t get it to the 25 and if you do cross the 25 there is probably a holding call coming.

So Fassel needs to chill out and know his role. His job isn’t important and he needs to take a page from Garrett’s playbook and start coaching scared and get rid of the confidence.

I agree to a point. Though I think there’s some hyperbole in your post.

special teams just needs to play sound, fundamental football.

no big returns given up. Be solid in field position. Make our kicks.

There was no reason to go for the block on that roughing the kicker play. 2 minutes left. Offense can move the ball. Get the damn football back and let our offense try to be the ones to get us into scoring position.

Yeah but too bad McCarthy loves him and trusts him...even more than Mike Nolan. In that postgame locker room speech, Fassel was standing right there next to McCarthy, smiling like he had just coached a perfect game. That's his lieutenant

Is this sarcasm? I honestly can't tell.

Yep. Again, if he has the authority to make that call at that point in the game then that's a poor decision made by Fassel.

IF Fassel has been given this overall authority on all decisions of special teams then McCarthy needs to take that authority back.

And again, this reflects poorly on decision making on the HC imo to have given a ST coach carte blanche authority in the first place.

Kinda like choosing Nolan as a DC ya know?

I had a feeling, and commented in the game thread that Fassel was trying to make things about himself.

Now he is standing next to MM at the post-game PC? Didn't know that.

We do not need a reckless special teams, just don't lose the game is all. Looked like an all out rush to try to block that punt, as if we were down three scores in the second half.

The line between aggressiveness and stupidity isn't all that fine.

While I agree he needs to fine tune some things I like the aggressiveness. Having said that I didn’t like it at that particular time in the game. JG’s conservative fair catch Beas and never once blocking a punt was for the birds.

My only beef with Special Teams is that the runner keeps trying to take it out of the endzone, and barely makes it to the 20 yard line. Letting it go gets you 5 more yards. Not sure how they are being coached on this. Maybe the runner sees a large hole in front of him and thinks he can get a big gain, only to see that gap close fast and then gets tackled short. Who knows....o_O

When is it ever good to be aggressive?

You can try all year for a big return or block punt and you’re lucky if you ever get 1 or 2 of them but you know what’s not rare? Getting a penalty and screwing it up for your offense by setting the team back 15 yards or just not getting possession all together because of these flopping punters.

The solution is don’t be aggressive and don’t screw up the game for your offense.

On a rare rare occasion should the return team be asked to make a play and if you want to do it then give me a gadget play or something on the return (which is likely to still get a penalty).

Ya I was not happy with that call. I mentioned it in the game thread not to rough the punter I just had a feeling something stupid was going to happen and that was the first thing that came to mind

We were moving the ball well on offense and the timing of that call was atrocious

I was very excited for him last year after all the hype, fast forward to this season and I can’t wait for him to be gone. He took a horrible special teams unit and somehow made them worse??

He wants to “be the man”… instead of simply doing his job. Way too eager to make a huge play— and the punt rush penalty was absolutely inexcusable. One of the worst special teams play calls I’ve seen in awhile considering the game situation and field position.

Sloppy return and coverage units as well. Throw in the missed kicks from week one— and Fassel’s unit has the most to improve on. Kudos to Greg Z for nailing the 56 yarder yesterday— impressive for sure— but overall, Fassel needs to settle down and help the team instead of trying to be the hero

Ditto here.
That's really all i'd like to have - flat up fundamental disciplined special teams

- I'm to a point where i'm often saying, now i can see why the Rams moved on without re-signing him.

- i used to think Bones aggressiveness and unpredictable ways made him exceptional ...but now i see some of the deal is ..

- i would think most of the reputable head coaches and sound organizations would prefer that ..vs the exotic gimmicks and gung ho antics. It looks like an extra gun and alpha aggressive, but
the unneccessary overaggressiveness looks to come back to bite us and put us more in awkward positions than what's needed..and the timing is even more crippling.

Instead of getting together a key 2 minute huddle offense. we do not even get the ball back until it's the shake and lateral gimmick try before the half.
Coaches cannot/should not place their teams in shaky situations like that .... and if Bones (Bonehead ?) has such a green light to keep these type of maverick plays, then i'd also
blame the HC for giving him such a green light.

I'm pissed at the block call he made.......but if we're being honest....it wasn't Bones fault they committed the penalty. Just because you sell out to block a punt doesn't give your player the pass to commit a penalty.

That roughing the kicker should have been called holding on the Chargers. He was held and took his momentum right into the kicker.

Same thing happened to the Ravens and Chiefs game. The refs had the right call then.
