Where Big Mac and his staff deserve some credit

Big Mac is terrible at his job.

His coordinators are making him not look completely foolish right now.

That about sums it up.

And the defensive coordinator still needs better game plans. Those soft, vanilla zone defenses are damn near pointless, as they rarely work. Maybe they'd work late in games after applying pressure or the threat of pressure. More run blitzes and more men around the LOS. Need more of a chess match at the LOS, too easy to pick apart the Cowboys defense. Turnovers are covering up the bad defensive play calling during long stretches of the game (thankfully, adjustments do get made, but sometimes too late...or not enough of them).

Moore's coming into his own, thank goodness.

He’s been hands off on those things.. Kellen Moore and Dan Quinn run their side of the ball.

“Teams being prepared to play”.”Adjustments.” Such a fan thing to say.

McCarthy is bad. Everyone knows it.
Yea, youre wrong here.

But its ok. Most casuals are…

“Hands off” LOL

This same coordinator has been here for 3 seasons now. The Offense has never looked like this.

make it make sense

I believe the title says “some credit”, not “total credit”, lol. As I said at the beginning of the OP, I don’t like everything he’s done. He has to clean up his in-game management or we’re going to lose a game we shouldn’t.

But I also believe the guy deserves some credit. It’s not an all or nothing thing.

I 100% agree.

Jerry has got coordinators to stay before when offered a head coaching job.

He’s not going to let another Sean Payton walk out the door. That decision cost us 10 years of Garrett.

I am always fascinated by cowboys fans takes on their own team when they do not even know their own teams history.

The cowboys, Bill Parcells specifically kept Sean Payton from leaving for the Raiders in 2005. He made him the assistant head coach in 05, fired Carthon and Promoted Payton to passing game coordinator and play caller.

then when the season is over Payton took the saints job.

Now ask yourself since Parcells convinced Payton not to take the raiders job and work with Al Davis after the 04 season what do you think he told Payton in private about working for Jerry Jones as the head coach?

In other words, sure there are probably a couple of decisions/calls he'd like to take back, but doesn't mean he hasn't done a good job.

I'm glad to see we are building something special. We have been September champions before so the test will come later in the season but for now, you can't ask for much more! One exception is keeping Zurline, who should have been given his walking papers after throwing the Bucs game with all those missed points. Zurline will cost us another game or two because he sucks.

He gets credit by association. Dude has made questionable decisions ever since he got here.

He wants to do the cool young hip stuff that cool young coaches do but he has no clue when to press the button or not.

Anyone trying to convince me that this team is being coached well during the game, with all these clock management issues, a useless challenge, strange game management at times...come on, man.

The Cowboys should be 4-0. Why not aggressively try to run the clock out by getting 1st downs during the Bucs game? They obviously played for a FG, only to punt the ball back to Brady with wayyyy too much time AND timeouts. That's Football 101. When you're a HC and you can't get the basics right, then I know you ain't got it.

Maybe he's a hecuva coach during practice, but during the game, he and his staff have been stinkers...Quinn needs to step it up (turnovers are making this defense look better than it is). Moore is better though, which helps, a lot.

Ummm seriously we should be estatic about the D.....if I told you who would be starting on D the first 4 games, is there any way you would have responded with "Damn straight we will lead the league in turnovers and be tops in defensive pressure"..come on now

Also the team has great camaraderie. They all are happy for each other. No one player feels above any other players. They are a team.
So give that credit to the coaching staff as well.

You listen to the post game PC's, the players all praise each other as well as the coaches.

This team is finally playing like a team. I've said for years that they didn't look like they were having fun. The mental makeup of this team has changed for the better. I totally agree with the OP that the coaches are getting everyone involved. I just hope the coaches can keep these guys grounded...

Diggs has 5 of the TOs, which is awesome. But he's covering up a lot of other defensive lapses.

And do the Cowboys really lead the league in defensive pressures??????

Why do I feel like even if we win a Super Bowl, there will be fans who say we did it all despite McCarthy.

I blame the Switzer memories on some fans thinking everyone but Big Mike is carrying this team.

Big Mike did not inherit a Super Bowl winner, and has to take a team with the franchise’s worst defense ever and make it into a winner.

They are in the top 5 for it yes...again there are few complaints to go around but one of them is NOT the DC

Exactly...Also what happened the last time we propped up a young OC to take the HC job as his first?

What the OP mentioned about culture, recognizing and developing young talent, getting backup players truly prepared to play when needed, knowing how to organize practice, realizing when to push the gas pedal and when to let off, keeping coaching staff relationships harmonious and smooth, seeing how and when to adjust during games... all of these are more important than calling timeouts or challenges during games. I'm surprised more people don't realize that.

Mike McCarthy has been rightly criticized (in my opinion) for some of his in-game management issues. It’s still a concern for me. BUT- I also believe in giving credit where credit is due as well.

Here’s where Big Mac and his staff deserve a ton of credit through 4 games:
  1. Next Man Up working- Unlike the previous coaching staff of the Clapper, this staff has proven that you can still play well and win some games with several starters out. Under Garrett, the loss of a starter- on either side of the ball- was practically a guaranteed loss. Followed by excuses. This staff should be commended for making “next man up” mean something.
  2. This staff uses the whole roster. I’ve been so impressed with the use of lots of players in creative ways. Some examples:
    • Tony Pollard- getting 12-15 touches a game as opposed to 2-5 under Garrett. Gives the running game more punch and preserves Zeke more.
    • Using Micah Parsons all over the field and in different positions besides LB.
    • Connor McGovern being used as a fullback. McGovern is being used on the OL and the backfield.
  3. Players are being developed- Its great to see young players being patiently coached and developed. Examples:
    • Terrance Steele- what a difference a year makes. This guy is at least an excellent swing T now. Maybe even a future starter.
    • Cedric Wilson- in his fourth season, he has become more than a just a backup WR. He’s provided some excellent plays.
    • This list could go on and on.
Mike McCarthy and his staff deserve some credit. This is a much better team because of some coaching and development. Would this have happened under Garrett? Hahaha! It’s early, but some credit is deserved.
They deserve more credit than that. Some fans take one bad decision and run with it....even Landry and Jimmy made bad decisions.....I give MM all the credit....he could have had other jobs but chose to deal with Jerry and still managed to pick his staff. He's had a positive impact on Moore and is also vested in the defense, since he has become a walk around coach.
