They saved a player that they want to keep and give other players playing time.

For Jaylon's salary this year, we saved nothing, but that was baked into the cake when we let his salary guarantee in March. The cap hit risk we *did* avoid was the injury guarantees for the next 2 seasons if he got injured this year.

LVE might be earlier than that if they can trade him this year.

ninja--- i know LVE suffered injury in 2019....but what happened to the 2018 LVE and Jaylon?...they both were flying to the ball getting off blocks etc....noticeable decline in both??

He was really good for 1 season and they thought they could get him cheaper by paying early.

Catch17---- if you watch the 2018 tape of Jaylon against Saints...he is bench pressing guards off him ...shedding blockers and ram-rod into ball carriers....what ever has caused this noticeable decline

is the reason the let him go....they thought he would even get better from 2018...but that was his only year he looked that way....been comparing tape and watching analysts who compare tape...our DC

wants his defense fast and "dawg" like getting to whoever has the ball....and Jaylon consistently gets blocked and washed out of the play 2021...LVE needs to step it up or he is next...my lowly opinion

Seriously? They had ‘no idea’ how a guy they were committing $7 million to ‘would respond and play’? Even MORE reason not to do it then.

hey stash--you commented to a guy named phillycowboysFan....can there be such a fan?....we hate the Sheagles and they hate us....or is this a guy who lives in Philly and just happens to be cowboy fan?

wow dude living dangerously

This is the equivalent of a parent telling their child i wish you were never born. I hope J Smooth enjoys his giant pile of dirty money cause he will be remembered as nothing more than a stinking festering wound that took forever to eliminate.

Jaylon Smith is to be congratulated for the classy manner he handled his release.

It never occurred to me that he was capable of such highly mature understanding.

Here's hoping his experience in Green Bay is one that he'll be quite pleased with.

Great leaders lead by example..he was far from a real leader. More of a verbal mouth who didn’t back it up on the field. He was detrimental to the team IMO. I’m glad he made 35 million dollars, good for him and his family. Wish him the best

I didn't say he was a great leader, the team and coaches said he was as good leader. Parsons called him a team leader. They made him a captain.

Again, no issue with the move from me.

Spotrac is reporting a 6.8 million dead cap hit for 2022.

really didn’t save a lot.

His salary, had he stayed, would've been added to the cap in addition to the dead cap, as I understand it. The DC is money they've kicked down the road. I think that's how it works.

What adds insult to injury is that this team wasted so much time on him. As you state, 2018 was the only year he looked like he was going to blossom into what they thought he would be coming out of college. He got paid the following year and maybe that had something to do with his decline. But I say also, his lack of football smarts probably became too much to over come too. From what everyone says, he's just the perfect human being, with an infectious smile, which is great. But how many times did he make BONE HEADED football mistakes. Alot more than I care to count. Betcha that had something to do with it too.

There wasn't a trade possible? Why couldn't we have been able to get a mid to late round pick at the very least?

Spotrac is reporting a 6.8 million dead cap hit for 2022.

really didn’t save a lot.

He would have counted $11.8M against the 2022 cap so Dallas actually saves $5M. In addition, any money he makes with Green Bay in 2021 is actually subtracted from Dallas' dead money hit because Smith's 'guaranteed money' was against injury and not 'truly' guaranteed.

"Thanks to offset language, if Smith is signed by another team, any new compensation he earns in 2021 will be subtracted from the remaining $5.6M owed to him by the Cowboys."

So hypothetically if Smith is paid say $2M (fabricated figure until contract details are released) then that money is subtracted from the $5.6M remaining on Smith's 2021 salary thereby saving Dallas money. So, the hope is Smith signs for a decent amount so as to save Dallas money.

Nobody else wanted him with that bloated contract. All he had to do is get an offseason cleanup surgery and a team would be on the hook for another 9 million.
