What to do about Moore

I just don't understand all this hand wringing over Kellen Moore.

Maybe because the Cowboys not only have the #1 offense, they are nearly 30 yards per game ahead of #2?

And maybe because the team also was #1 in 2019?

And maybe because the offense is balanced and customized to the opponent?

Oh...and maybe because he designs the offense and calls the plays...and will be a very hot commodity.

Your talking about the guy who fired a 2 time SB coach who built the greatest team of the 90's.

You do realize this right?
I'm always surprised when I still hear this from good fans however
When Johnson won his first of two Super Bowls as head coach with the Cowboys in 1992, Jerry Jones looked like a genius. ... But in a bizarre turn of events, Jimmy Johnson quit his job as head coach, eventually stating that he and Jerry Jones had a strained relationship.
Jimmy Johnson wanted out so he could live in Florida and coach the Dolphins.
He approached the owner of the Dolphins and as they talked the owner [cant remember his name] asked Jimmy who do you recommend to coach the Dolphins and Jimmy said,"well how about me"? so no I dont realize that

Jimmy was forced to resign by Jerry.

You dont give a 1M payout to a guy who voluntarily leaves.

Let's be real now.

Not fully sold, sorry.....the 2pt conversion play stuck out, the frequency we make the defense adjust vs doing the adjusting, and the fact TRomo has become the PR person.

I like Moore but a lot of people are connecting Dak's success solely on him. MM has to get some credit as well, Moore was also the OC with Garrett and Dak never looked this good.

We've seen this show before. Moore becomes paid like a HC and is given assistant HC title. The 1st losing streak, fire MM and Moore is HC.

We been there already. Remember how Garrett was promoted to HC. McCarty is a good coach a Superbowl winning coach so stop treating him like Wade Phillips.

Jerry doesn't have to fire anyone, just give Kellen a pay raise to stay where he is.

Fire McCarthy and make him HC. We get rid of our biggest weakness and get to keep our best coach

MM as pseudo GM and Kellen HC. Simple enough. And only if we get to SB. You can’t fire a SB HC but you can promote him.

QBs make the OC not the other way around. Josh Daniels MIGHT be the exception to that rule.

I'll disagree and use Cam Newton, Tim Tebow, Kyle Orton (after trading Cutler), and probably Mac Jones as examples.

A pet peeve of mine is when fans worry about the future, instead of the present. If we win the super bowl this year, I don't care what happens next year to the coaches. Sure, it'd be great to keep Moore and have this amazing offense forever and ever, but what does it matter if we don't win today?

If McCarthy as head coach gets us a super bowl win, isn't that the whole point?!

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I guess some people enjoy getting kicked in the rear just to get up and get kicked in the rear again..

Remind me.... Didn't we just recently take a good (not great) OC (Yes, I'll give JG credit where credit is due) and promote him to HC to learn on the job only to have 10 years of nothing? And you want to do this again?

Make no mistake, KM is an OC Wonderboy. He's an Offensive genius. I love seeing some of the plays he draws up... Sometimes I think we have some of the wrong players to fit what he wants to do. But is that his fault?

My point is (as others have said) Dan Quinn, Wade Phillips, Josh McDaniels (all of who are one of the best in their perspective side of the ball) are great coordinators. It doesn't mean they are cut out to be head coaches.

Fire the box of rocks and keep Moore.. You do this Jerry and I'll officially bow at the throne of Jones.

There is a precedent for this with how Booger took care of Garrett with that 3M OC salary and most likely some assurance he was in line for the HC job.

The real question I have is did McC really suggest bringing Moore back or was that suggested to him? Was that one of the comforting things he said to Booger in that 12 hour interview?

depends on if we have our current DC. If so, then I'd be for Kellen as HC.

I'm guessing my statement should have been:
I just don't understand all this hand wringing over Kellen Moore situation.
Because despite me turnaround and saying:
Again, if I had my way, Moore IS the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. But that will be later, rather than sooner.
You seem to take that as "Screw Moore, he sucks" based off your response here.

But since I "hate Moore", I will play along.

Who was our OC of virtually the same offensive personnel last year?
Yet, when the starting QB went down the offense failed to score 20 points in 7 of 11 games Dak did not play in.
And that WAS with the arguably "the best backup QB in the NFL" and with even some fans believing (or at least saying) the Dallas Offense would not miss a beat with Dalton instead of Dak.

Hey, and I get it, it wasn't "only Dak" that went down last year. But yet when hit with adversity, the offense that has been innovative, balanced and customized for our opponents failed to score 20 points in 7 of 11 games.

So without a doubt, the players played AT LEAST a small part in the offense's success and failure and even though having a customized game-plan for our opponents has been lacking in Dallas for what seems like forever, I think that is because Dallas has been behind the times when it comes to modern coaching practices in the NFL.

Give me an OC that is NOT stuck in the 90s or a complete moron, and I think our offense will still be one of the best in the NFL with the talent it has.

Now that I'm done playing devils advocate, here is all I was trying to say:
  1. You, I, or anyone on this board (unless Stephen Jones is secretly hanging around) has no control over what happens with Moore, so let's enjoy 2021 and worry about 2022 AFTER the 2021 season is over. Otherwise I'm afraid IF Dallas wins it all some will be unable to enjoy it and that would be really, really sad.
  2. While I am not 100% "you will not change my mind" opposed to Moore taking over as the HC as soon as next year, I do hope he proves to understand the difference between, and has a plan as, a HEAD COACH and not just an Offensive Coordinator.
  3. I mean, how many "Great Coordinators" have become HCs just to fall flat on their face? For every Payton and McVay, there are dozens of McDaniels, Manginis, Ryans (father and son), Mornhenwigs, Capers, Callahans, Phillipses, Turners, Weises, Crennels, Spagnuolos, Whisenhunts, Camerons, Haleys, Strongs, ect ... I'm sure I could find more, but I think you get the point.
  4. While again, and I quote, "I want him (Moore) in Dallas in 2022 and beyond" if for whatever crazy reason I had to pick between Moore or Dak, see ya Moore with absolutely no hesitation on my part.

I feel yucky now because I'm sure this is going to come across as very "Anti-Moore" or as a "Moore hater" but I AM NOT.

He is arguably one of the best young offensive minds in the game and I DO want him in Dallas for the foreseeable future. But that does not make him an automatic slam dunk at head coach.

Not saying that automatically makes him a terrible HC either. He just better have a plan that he can execute as a HC before we just "hand him the job" like we seemed to do with Garrett.

That's all.

If things continue to go our way this season, there is no doubt Kellen Moore could be a hot HC candidate for someone next year. Do we just fire MM and promote him to HC? Do we have someone else on the staff to continue with this offense? I know its premature to worry about this, but its a likely scenario
The plans are already in place IMO. He isn’t going anywhere.
