Championship defense

We definitely don't have a championship defense, however, I think they've been holding their own. That could be enough to take us into the postseason. I do think as the season marches on this unit will continue to mature and gel. Also, despite what some posters may say about this, I think it will absolutely help getting back DLaw and Gallimore down the line.

Gregory seems to be finding his groove. If he can keep heating up, that will go a long ways too.

Most cowboy fans. Realize if you can keep the other team from scoring 27 points or less. You should be able to win some football game. I truly believe we have a championship offense. I do not believe we have a champion defense at this time. I still want a middle linebacker. Strong safety. Defensive tackle. Sure we are looking much better than we have in the past. I just don’t know if it’s good enough for a championship. . We’re getting there lol

Thanks for Sharing ...

For now I’m really good with Kearse as SS.

I don’t have All 22 like the podcast guys but I’m guessing he is grading out well and better in coverage, (especially man) than Wilson.
I used to always observe that while Wilson creates big play hits and turnovers, he’s not always in position he needed to be in.

If Wilson has it in him to make the plays that outplays Kearse, ..so be it.
But the way Kearse continues to grade out, it doesn’t look to be that way remaining of ’21.
Kearse seems to do his best work as a box safety, around the line.

And aside from Gronk in Bucs game, I haven’t had the feeling that TEs are feasting on us on a regularity as they used to in the past. (ditto with screens)
In 2022, It’s a very good chance that if Kearse gets a substantial FA offer and departs, we’ll have Donovan Wilson returning to his starting role next year.

- Only thing I’ll keep saying and insisting is ...we still need a field general at the safety role, a signal caller and leader that will properly place secondary members in place,
stabilize assignments and keep teammates encouraged - especially when the going gets tough.

- Kazee is familiar with Joe Whitt-Quinn defense, but I don’t get the vibe that he is a leader.
And it’s still way too much confusion and mishap blown assignments in this defense. (and that's not including issues vs run)
New scheme or not. this is getting too far into this season for it to continue happening..

- I really hope it doesn’t catch us come stretch time to secure home field... or actual playoff time.

Championship defense? No, not yet. Championship defenses don't get burned for 75 yard TD's against middle of the road teams with a rookie QB. The Dallas D made Mac look like a pro bowl QB in just his 6th start in his NFL career.

Did you happen to watch what Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow were able to do to NFL defenses last year? They were playing with worse teams than the Patriots against better defenses than ours (not saying much) and were able to light them up at times. It happens.. Unless he is a complete boob a good rookie QB with a good coach can do some damage against decent NFL defenses. Which at this point is all we have.

No this absolutely is not a championship defense.. I don't have much hope that it gets there this season. The one saving grace could be if Lawrence, Hill and Gallimore come back and energize the d-line. Both against the run and in the passing game. People harping on the 75 yarder against New England should remember two things.. 1) Kazee was just fined for a routine hit in the last game or the one before and might just have been trying to save money for beer and bail (sorry couldn't resist) by not blowing the receiver up there and 2) At game speed both he and Diggs saw a white jersey in position to make a play on the ball and both pulled up to let the other guy get it. I think going forward they will communicate better as to "who got it" in those situations and it won't be a problem again.

Though i'm liking development of rookie Osa, ..he's already among league in interior pressures., we're still struggling vs run and much responsible is from the middle gut.
I'm not yet feeling rookie 320+ Bohanna, and Urban and Watkins are not holding it down like it needs to be.

- we've been seeing bits and spots where teams were tinkering with running on us, but Pats really buried us -even on one scoring drive.
And Pats don't make their living running the ball.

- Sorry but it brings up memories of Rams playoff game loss or near 300 yards rushing .!
And one element to help stopping the Cowboys offense ... is by run game ball control.

- Getting run defending DLaw will help, but i don't place faith in Gallimore and Hill who were not stout run defenders to begin with.
We still do not have that imposing player vs run .. this year. And that greatly affects the LB unit as well.

i believe the Packers and Saints won the SBs with a defense that was among the bottom NFL teams in yield yards,..but was either tops or among tops in collecting turnovers.
It's not totally out of the question with a suspect defense and its flaws.

But i also do not want to lax and count on those two particular teams- that's how they manage to overcome and dealt with it.
and we'll have to deal with our own flaws ..and either we'll make it happen despite the flaws, .. or it will be the very likely reason why we will not advance in the playoffs.

I'm one of those that firmly believes Defense is the reason most SBs are won, and even the offense benefits and feeds off the works of what the defense provides in most critical of moments
in the playoffs.

As I been saying. This defense leaves way too many receivers wide open, and the rush defense giving up a high YPR average.
We all know it takes a good 4 games for most teams to show who the really are, especially with the lack of PS play. They need to clean that up pretty quickly, as we get more into a few tougher games.

I said it may take 4 to 6 weeks, but maybe close to 8 to 10 weeks to see what our defense really is, time to gel. As it install basically a new defense. However, with all the injuries and several key players, new faces, rookies. This defense is still in flux, they still need more time.

It could be week 12 or so by the time Gallimore and DLaw are back and have a few games in before we see any huge improvements.
Which is ok, as long as the turnovers keep coming, as that is their "defensive stops" we need at times to help the offense get and maintain a lead.
I say that, because around week 12 or so, come playoff push, and if needed HFA push time, and into the playoffs. The defense playing at that higher level will be needed.

I don't think we seen the best of this defense yet, however, it is still a year away from calling them elite, if they improve over the off-season next year as they did this year.

Nah brother.. that Packer defense in 2010 was 5 in scoring and 2 in yards. They were REALLY good.. Now the Saints were the ones who were 20th in scoring and 25th in yards but #2 in turnovers.. I think were like record good in defensive scores that year.. as evidenced in that Super Bowl..

Strong safety? What the hell is wrong with Kearse's play?

The most impressive aspect of this team is not the high powered and balanced offense, but the defensive take-aways. If the pass defense can improve and we can reduce the opposing teams "splash" plays, we will have a championship team.

One thing people forget is that this defense is still new, so many new faces and new schemes. These guys are still learning the schemes and learning to play with each other, it's encouraging where they are so far. They're getting turnovers and have made some stops when they had to, there's also a lot of yards there that were effectively garbage time. It's not a finished product, but they are trending the right way and it's what this defense looks like at the end of the season that will really count.

Pro Bowl QB? Lol. You people say the dumbest stuff. All he did all game aside from that one play was dink and dunk. We gifted him a score when we failed on 4th down on the first drive. His one good play was a blown coverage. Blown coverages happen. Mac Jones played the same type of game against Tampa's defense a few weeks ago, too. He drove them into a game winning field but was missed.

You act like a championship defense means giving up zero big plays at all. Even the most scrub QBs hit on big plays every now and then.

This will take time. A lot of young guys on the defensive side and still no Lawrence, Gallimore and hopefully soon Joseph. But a D is definitely developing here.

We need LB, a pass rusher and or a BIG BAD DT like the kid from Georgia, Jordan I think his name is, a WR, and 3 offensive linemen.
