The defense is a little smoke and mirrors right now. The smoke is the offense averaging 34ppg; the mirrors a CB playing at one of the highest levels of any CB in Cowboys history.

I agree Lawrence will help the DL, and Gregory specifically, and Quinn needs to get Parsons more involved to increase impact and take the pressure off the secondary.

This defense can work against most teams but come playoff time and the better offenses like TB, LAR and GB are involved, they have to get better than this.

Since we have a bye, I will share a few thoughts..we will be better with Collins, Conner is not as bad as many think, Gallup is good, but won't make a big difference, Dak is great, but we need a good backup....our defense s not as good as it seems, Diggs is saving our butts for now.....that may not continue....Tank will be a great upgrade.... MM and his staff are doing a great job.....I hope JJ trades for a stud defensive player.

I agree with everything you said but you skirted around something... Dak is great but his calf strain is worse than is being said. As you pointed out, we need a good backup, which we do not currently have. Until then we aren't winning anything.

Gallup and Dlaw aren't elite but they will allow us to do things differently than we've been allowed to do without them. Gallup is a better more consistent deep threat than Wilson and Dak may go deep a little more once Gallup is playing at 100%. Moore may employ a little more 3wide as well. With Dlaw we certainly upgrade the strong side run defence but I hope Quinn finds a way for him to get more 1on 1 looks and continues to let Parsons bring pressure.

The pats did our worst nightmare. They used the blueprint teams have used in the past years. Put it on Daks arm and shut down our run. This time we have the talent to hammer the ball and keep them honest but if they stack the line Dak has the tools to get it over the top and the WR and TE to get open. Daks game has improved and he sees the open man. Experience has got the game slowing down. We need to improve on Defense. They ran the ball against us just like other teams did. We have to stop the run. We do come up and stop it after a while but need to do it quicker.

I agree, but I will add this: the defense is going to continue to improve as the season wears on. Osa will improve. Micah will improve. Joseph will get back and help. All of the guys will get more and more used to Quinn’s defense and his playbook will expand as they continue to grow in his system.

Like you mention; Tank will return, which will help draw pressure off of Gregory and others.

The defense isn’t perfect but they are only going to get better and better.

You’re right though, Diggs INT streak can end at any time.
I agree except the part about Joseph. He hasn’t impressed at all. I actually like our other rookie CB better, so far. Also just because Diggs doesn’t get an interception, he still impacts the game a lot( he can play man, while Brown or the slot CB get help etc.).

Some rookies do, that’s true… but not all. Look at Diggs last season. He improved throughout and by the end of the season, was playing his best ball, by far.

I don’t think as many guys hit that rookie wall these days because they pace the players with only so many padded practices, etc.

I really can’t see Parsons, Odighizuwa, Golston, Cox, and Bohanna not being a lot better in the second half of the season and into the playoffs. They will be, IMO.

Even other young guys like Anae and Wilson should continue improving as the year goes on. Anae especially. He basically didn’t play last season and he’ll get better even getting a few snaps here and there this season.

Also, Kazee and Hooker should get better as they get further and further away from their injuries. As they learn the defense and regain their confidence, I expect them to make more and more plays.

Kearse too, has been growing weekly as he gets to stretch his legs in a new, unique role that Quinn has formed for him.

And of course, the biggest thing is just everyone learning to play together and learning Quinn’s system and how he’s calling games.

Heck, even Quinn himself will grow and improve as he figures out exactly how he’s forming this defense. It is different than the defenses he ran at Seattle or Atlanta. He has branched out significantly from what he had been doing. He’s playing things very differently now. As he sees what is working, learns the skills of his new players and their strengths and weaknesses, his defense will become more efficient and have fewer mistakes.

I’ve been wrong before but I’m expecting a better defense as we go past the mid-point and towards the playoffs. I honestly expect some serious growth on that side of the ball, including more and more pressure on QB’s.

About the only thing that I expect to fall off some is the ridiculously torrid pace at which Diggs is intercepting the ball. That just can’t keep going at this rate, although I still think Diggs will get his hands on some more balls.

Anyway, yeah… I don’t think anybody is going to want to play the Dallas defense by the time the playoffs roll around.
Great points and well thought out!

I agree our D should get better and better as the season rolls on.

Even though our O is playing extremely well, all it takes is one weak link to blow up a play or our season. I am a little worried about Biadasz and William. I wish the coaches could find upgrade( McCovern, etc. ) for at least one of them. An upgrade for both would be even better. When we play teams like Tampa Bay, the Rams, and the Steelers we need to be STRONG in the interior of our O line.

Turnovers helped our defense , but we have a good group.
Only injuries will stop our ofensse.

McGovern is on the team, if Philbin thought he was better, he'd be starting.....

We need defensive help in the worst way

Parsons and Osa will hit the rookie wall in December unless they get a break

They have 2 weeks now to rest and reset. Play 6 more games and get 10 days before the final 5 games. Hopefully a bye week for the playoffs. Or they get rest for week 18, the 17th game.
I understand what you are saying, as NCAA plays 11 to 14 games, and then the NFL we had 4 PS games, then 17 regular season games. Plus Micah took a year off of college football.
So they could get tired legs by then.
But hopefully those periods I mentioned will help.
