I know it's still very early to look at the defensive needs for next off-season, but it's a good time to start the discussion on what we have seen thus far:

(don't kill me if I forget a name or two)

DE-DLaw, Gregory*, Armstrong*, Basham, Golston, Anae, Kamara

I don't believe DLaw's roster spot is in trouble. Gregory is a priority resign, where Golston should replace Armstrong as a key rotational backup. Anae, Kamara will have to fight for roster spots

DT-Osa, Gallimore, Hill, Urban*, Watkins*, Bohanna

Team still could use a legitimate 1T/NT. Bohanna is developing for that role. Hill still has 1 yr left on his deal at a low rate. Don't think Urban/Watkins return.

LB-Parsons, Lve*, Neal*, Cox, Gifford, Bernard

I believe 1 veteran (Lve or Neal) gets resigned at an affordable rate. Cox should see a larger role next season, possibly a starter.

CB-Diggs, Brown, Lewis, Joseph, Wright, Canady*, Robinson

A lot hinges on development of our 3 young prospects. If they show they are ready, Brown/Lewis could be off the roster. Don't think Canady resigns. Will Reggie Robinson win a roster spot?

S-Kazee*, Hooker*, Kearse*, Wilson, Muku, Thompson*

A lot of upcoming fa's to this positional group. Would really like the team to resign a few off this list, it will come down to price. Team still has Wilson under contract, which makes keeping Kearse more challenging. The front office has to add youth via the draft at the Free Safety position. Think Kazee or Hooker will be back.

I'm actually a lot happier with our D than most of my posts sound, but I'm not even close to being satisfied. The FO has tried beefing up the D, but it's only in the last 2 drafts that they've really started hitting on some promising players. I hope their rebuild continues in the right direction.

Same as we needed coming into this year. This team is a CB#2 and health from being really, really good. Yeah, some other needs for sure, but by far this is the biggest.

Let Neal walk and make Kearse your rover. Wilson is a significantly better coverage S.

CB could definitely get look inside the top 30/60/100 in the draft.

DE would be my highest priority. DLaw may not get cut, but they have to look beyond. With Golston, we could probably cut him and not have the position be a weakness. However you really want that position to be a strength

  • I don’t think the CB room changes other than Canady goes out
  • It’d be nice to hold on to Kazee and Kearse
  • LB room need to be rebuilt
  • I’d like a 1T
  • I’d probably cut Lawrence unless he takes a pay cut and sign Gregory and Shultz with the money

Good post as usual ......

I'm bracing for Gregory playing himself out of price range unless we restructure DLaw or let him walk with a post-June cap hit. If he gets double-digit sacks, I think Stephen follows the same template he used for DLaw. He tagged DLaw after his first double-digit season with a promise of long-term if he repeated it. 2020 DE tag value .......$16M. This is what I think is the floor to keep Randy off the market.

BTW........what are odds of us going to complete 3-4. Would it not lessen the impact of losing Dlaw or Gregory coz Parsons then becomes a primary pass rusher.

Everything depends on how they choose to manage the cap. We will still need help at all 3 levels of defense even if the young guys continue to step up. We are probably ok at CB if either Wright or Joseph step up, better if both grow. So many jags along the Dline, we absolutely must draft a couple more guys at least 1 interior and 1 pass rush specialist. We still need to be more consistent at free safety. If the front office figures out they can replicate what Dlaw does on the field at a much cheaper rate then they can afford to keep some of the kearse type role players who are making a big impact for little money. Next year will be vastly different than this year, I think we lose much of the depth that has allowed us to win 5 straight games so far. We all need to enjoy this year, no guarantee we look this good next year.

I think if keeping Lawrence will cost you Gregory, I think they will dump Lawrence

I believe Cox is slated to take over the role of Neal so he may be expendable.

I think and hope LVE walks after the season. I held out hope for him but I have not liked what I’ve seen this season overall.

I’m intrigued by Kelvin Joseph but I would not hold my breath. This is going to be a deep corner class and if we can find a bookend to pair with Diggs we should be open to that.

We should always be looking to add DE/Edge talent.

My thing with CB is: What are the odds both Joseph and Wright hit? Neither Brown or Lewis are going to be here long term, and you need 3 starters at CB. If one of Joseph or Wright aren't starting caliber CB's, then we are weak at the position

I believe the team already has earmarked a big extension for Gregory. They have always prioritized edge rushers. Don’t think DLaw is in trouble yet, maybe after next season. It is possible Gregory does get tagged

Still a lot of unknowns at the corner position with Joseph, Wright and even Robinson. It will friend how they feel about the group if they address the need again, think corner will not be a huge need in the off-season

Think DT, FS and Mike LB are the top needs

I believe the front office/coaches are much higher on Lawerence then the fan base

And that is the problem. Now I like him but we already proven we can replicate his production through scheme, other players, etc. The issue is his price tag. If he was 9 million then fine, but he's 3x that with crazie high base salaries the next 2 years. It will be interesting to see what they do. I expect stephen to use the cap as a crutch, keep him and let many free agents walk then say its not his fault the team has issues.

I disagree, his loss has been felt. Outside of the Chargers, we haven't face a top QB in his absence.
