I like both.
I think both have a pretty good number of songs.

If it is just about who I would rather listen to or who I like more I say it is a toss up.

If you are going to talk about influence or something along those lines, I would just say that Van Halen did covers of two of their songs in Girl You really got me and Where have all the good times gone.

I know many knew about You really got me but I imagine there are many who did not realize it for Where have all the good times gone on Diver Down.

Oddly enough Diver Down is full of covers.

Where have all the good times gone
Dancing in the Streets
Pretty Woman
Big Bad Bill
Happy Trails

So there were 12 tracks on Diver Down
5 of the 12 were covers.
3 of the 12 were small instrumentals (cathedral, Intruder, and little guitars intro)

So for a total of 4 original songs out of 12 (again not counting the instrumental/intros)

On a silly side note...In little guitars there is a line that says catch as catch catch as catch can....for the longest time it sounded to me like etch a sketch etch a sketch lol

Gotta go with the Cars just on the popularity/massive airplay of their first 5 albums.

Haha you aren't the only one that misheard those lyrics:laugh:
Pretty Woman{the single}was released around January 82 just as a single. The band didn't even have a album to go with it. After pressure from the Warner Brothers they went in the studio and recorded DD in 12 days. Not my favorite VH album but the Full Bug and Hang em High are worth the price of admission.

Read the title and thought this was going to be about a 74 Pinto.

The Kinks or The Cars?

I don't know. Much tougher than the Beatles or the Stones.

I may have mentioned this previously. I was turned on to The Cars by my younger sister; my Mom asked me to chaperone her and her friends to a Cars concert at Hartford Civic Center. Been listening to them ever since. The Kinks are good too.

I think the Kinks are sort of an acquired taste. The more you listen to their songs the more they grow on you. A bit eclectic in the make up of their music.

The cars could be considered a bit more popular music where they were able to hit a certain sound or groove that was resonant with listeners in that time period. A bit more mainstream if you will.

Cars' debut album is among the best ever, start to finish.
Cars' music, especially the earlier albums, is really terrific. Lyrically less impressive ("Let them brush your rock n roll hair...").
Some Kinks albums venture into dandy folk material that I think I might have to be English to really get.
But both bands produced a great series of bangers, probably about the same number.

The Kinks have to give it to them. Earlier band 60s& 70s and The Cars more 80s. Kinks adapted to the 80s

Two very good groups that I enjoyed too much to choose between. The Cars took the world by storm when I was in HS. Great party music. Kinks always a very solid play.

I never was a Kinks fan, no matter whoever else was...

The Cars ... made one the best MTV videos ever, with Drive.
