How many players away from a legit championship level D?

Are we sure we know what we're getting in Gregory? I'm not bashing him by any means but we KNOW what we have in DLaw. How will Randy react to his first major contract? Not all players respond well......
Exactly. I would offer Gregory at team friendly deal with low guarantees. The local mediots for some reason think Gregory is worth a Tank deal. He basically has played well in about 8 career games in 7 seasons. The Cowboys are ok without paying Gregory. Hopefully he plays like Lawrence Taylor for the rest of the season.

3.

Run stuffing DT. This is a much improved position from years past. But we still are vulnerable up the middle.
MLB. LVE is garbage
Free Safety. Still need a ballhawk and somebody who can tackle

Yep. Right down the middle. 3 even above average players at these positions and you have a chance.

Can’t rely on getting turnovers, especially from the elite qb’s. This defense has struggled in giving up the big play either on the ground or through the air

All defenses do these days.....idk how you stop big plays because everything is a penalty these days ...The Rams have a dream squad on defense i would lose it if we had Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, and Von Miller but their defense isnt doing it right now

all you can hope for on defense is you get a critial stop on 3rd down to shift momentum or a turnover

the days of just dominating and teams going 3 and out with only getting 120 yards of offense are sadly over

I think a talented, huge 1T who can push the pocket or hold the line against the run is essential. I like the DL improvements thus far, but don't think this guy is on the team yet.

I am not sure I understand the exercise, are we looking for a defense they can win championships with or a defense that can win championships despite the offense? I will assume the first case since the offense is good enough to win with.

In this scenario, I think they need one player and that is a space eating run stuffing DT. It is amazing how good the LBs will be when a big DTs forces a double team and keeps the LBs clean. The way the Saints just ran right at the Cowboys getting 6 yards per carry was ugly, but we have seen it too much. Maybe Gallimore is that guy, but I don't think so. I need to see it first.

Who cares.

Defenses will be good sometimes. Sometimes it won’t.

It’s an offensive league. Defenses are nothing but a complimentary piece these days.

Expecting consistency on defense just isn’t a realistic goal anymore.

What Dallas has done with the state of the current NFL is something every team would be glad to have.
No one wins the Super Bowl with average defenses.

Let's assume, Dan Quinn doesn't leave for another HC position. What is still needed to transform this defense into championship level?

Although the scheme has changed, let's go look back at the legion of boom personnel in Seattle where Quinn was their DC:

DE-Avril, Bennett (Gregory, DLaw if both are back are comparable, think DLaw can kick inside as well)
DT-McDaniel, Mebane (more space eater run players then pass rushers, Osa fits, need for another one)

LB-Wagner, Wright, Smith (1 superstar, 1 good linebacker who can play all the spots, need that 2nd LB)

CB-Sherman, Maxwell (We have Diggs who is a ballhawk like Sherman, jury is out if we have our other starting corner on the roster, keep in mind we are more of a man press scheme now)

S-Earl Thomas, Chancellor (I believe Kearse is a similar player to Cam, can do it all inside the box, yes, we need a legit FS and doesn't have to be as good as Earl.

Based this comparison, summary of what I believe is needed to make this D into championship level:

-Need to resign both Gregory and Kearse. Figure out how to also retain DLaw.
-Find another quality space eater for the interior of the DL
-Draft a quality LB who can play next to Parsons, but also has the ability to multiple LB positions
-Need another star DB and a quality role player, doesn't matter which position

2 key pieces at LB/DB and a few good role players
we need another CB (better than brown) and at least one legit Saftey and a decent LB....not asking for stars or all pros, just good players...our saftey play is very very average to below average. brown has his moments (good and bad). parsons is the only legit LB we have. LVE is a liability. Cox got injured....we need another viable LB

It’s more about the QBs. Defenses are just along for whatever ride their QB takes them on.
The common denominator in the history of Super Bowl championships is defense. Sure QB play is major but the history of the league is full of great QBs that never won a Super Bowl.

It’s more about modern era of football.

The league isn’t built for defense. I’d argue nearly all defenses are the same. Maybe 10 above average defenses and the rest are just absolutely terrible.

Dallas would be in the championship level for the modern era.

We’ll go as far as Dak can take us. That’s our reality.

There isn’t a current Super Bowl contender that would have their expectations change if they had their defense.

Good article, believe that Cox comes back as the LB we need. Also let's wait to see how Gallimore plays coming up. Would be nice shows up next year like Diggs did. Be a homerun to get Hamilton at S in the draft but probably impossible. Also really need a LT in the draft early.
Need to resign Gregory, Pollard, Gallup and Kearse.

Totally agree

1T DT
Another starting MLB who can lay the wood and stop the run
FS (I think this can be Hooker)
Good CB (hopefully this can be Joseph)

A lot of tough decisions ahead from who they keep and what they decided to target via the draft. We have been asking for a quality safety for 15 years!

Clearly we have to upgrade LB and the FS position. We do have a few young prospects at corner, same can be said about DL, but LB/Safety have to be the #1 priority.

I agree, no more dominating defenses, but there are solid ones. What is maddening about our squad is their poor tackling, that leads to many chunk plays. That play late against the Saints was disgusting, the same thing happened against the Raiders and Jackson. No, it's not only having enough stars, but rather quality role players.

not disagreeing, but we have been saying that since Jenkins, Hamlin, Claiborne, ....Just pick someone.
They have used an high investment on Joseph, you have to believe he is the future opposite Diggs at the position.

When teams struggle to stop the run, they control the clock and have the offense watch on the sidelines. Very difficult for an offense to get in sync when they are off the field for long periods of time.

We need a big nasty game wrecker upfront who can create havoc, stuff the run and collapse a pocket. We need to be more physical upfront. I’ve seen too many times this season where we’re being manhandled upfront. You can’t allow an offense to impose their will on you.
