Tipping question

I've noticed there's a grey area in tipping. If you order delivery, do you tip a percentage of the subtotal of all the food or do you also include the delivery fee? For example, you order a sandwich and drink, which costs:
$22.50 (food and drink)
$3.00 (delivery fee).
$2.14 (tax)

I know you don't include the tax. However, if you want to tip 20%, do you calculate $22.50 X .20? Or do you add the delivery fee and thus calculate $25.50 X .20?

When I saw the title, I was going to say, "Put your shoulder into it, but more importantly make sure the cow doesn't hear you coming."

As for the money, since 20% of the delivery fee isn't really significant, I'd just throw it in there to be nice. Of course, if you're not satisfied with the quality of the delivery service, tip accordingly.

I normally just guestimate the 20% of the total and round to the nearest dollar. Anything close to that and your delivery person should be happy.

20% of the grand total, round up to the next dollar if past the .50 mark :thumbup:

Yeah, it’s not a gray area to them. More like slight of hand when they provide you those suggested tip calculations.

In your scenario I would only tip on the food and drink.

Also, if they charge a $3 delivery fee I would only tip what is necessary to get you to that 20%. For example, 20% x $22.50 = $4.50 tip, so I would add $1.50 (tip) to the $3 “delivery fee” to get to $4.50.

So, I’m your scenario the final breakdown would be:
$22.50 food
$3.00 delivery fee
$1.50 tip
$2.14 tax

Remember, all a “delivery fee” is a way for them to ensure some sort of “tip.”

Do the drivers get that delivery fee, or does that go to the company who hires the drivers?

I tip 20% of the total bill....tipped 30% at the height of the pandemic, back to 20 since the restaurants went back to 100% occupancy.
