If we win the coin toss, should we defer or take the first possesion?

It's really not about much more than the unique ability to double down on consecutive possessions.

Your defense can potentially rest for 30-40 minutes of real time.

Think that doesn't matter at the end of a close game?

Couldn’t care less. Teams alternate possessions. Defense needs to get stops and offense needs to score points. Don’t care which unit is first up to do their job.

Make a meteorological decision instead of predicting the half-time mood. It's going to be sunny and there might be a nice glare working. Pick the end zone accordingly.

What do you think should be the plan here for the wildcard. I’m usually a defer but I think getting an early lead would really do wonders for the Boys. We want to try to get the 9ers to become a passing team.

Defer and set the tone on defense. This way if our offense sputters to start, we at least have the ball to start the 2nd half.

The problem is, our offense comes out looking like crap in several of our losses. The last thing I want is to give the 49ers offense something to cheer about before they even touch the ball.

Even though I was a defensive coach, I would take the ball when I felt I had a good match-up....that said, in this game.......I'll take the ball.

They can also sputter to start the 2nd half.

Yeah. but it's better than the 49ers getting the ball to start the 2nd half. Then there's no chance at all for the Cowboys offense to sputter or do otherwise. But then again, the Cowboys may surprise me and move the ball with their first possession.

I think it's 50/50, but in this scenario, I'd take it in the 2nd half after you've seen a thing or two. Count on our defense for a quick 3 and out early and it's up to the offense to score on possessions.

It depends if the coin was made in the USA. And the stupid refs...

If it were my team, I get into the fight...we get the first bullet...the Cowboys walk down to the end zone. Get that first fight. Set a tempo that they never expected...run around as much as you want...the Cowboys will find you, waiting at ATT&T....for the game...then go back to Cali...no trick catch this time.

If the 49ers get the ball to open the 2nd half, the defense needs to make a stop.

well it kind of depends on the score does it not? If we are up by 21, a stop while a bonus would not be "necessary"
Sure but the goal of every defensive possession is to stop the other team from scoring whether that be the first drive of first half, first drive of the 2nd half, or any other time they take the field.

I feel like we always squander the first drive anyway so kick the ball play defense for one drive then go take the lead with the luxury of having the ball come back to you in the 3rd.

100% defer.

The defense is our more physical group, offense is a bit more finesse. Let the defense come out, force them to get a stop and that will allow the offense to not feel pressure on opening drive jitters and give the benefit of the ball in second half...
Bingo! You have no idea how the San Fran defense is going to play you going into the game. You have the opportunity to see and adjust at half.

One area I have disagreed with McCarthy. I think you defer since you can't win a gam on the 1st series of the game. However by deferring you have a chance to cut the lead if trailing after halftime or you have the chance to extend the lead if winning at halftime. I think the start of the 2nd half can go a long way in determining the outcome of the game. Just my 2 cents

Exactly..............if you can "double dip" by scoring at the end of the first half and at the start of the second half that is huge.

That is why I always want to defer if given the option.

Would be interesting to see how our offense and defense performs on the first drive of each half. If I have time tomorrow, I will chart it out.
