It is likely that there would be zero need to "close on the deal" if McClay had already been given the deserved recognition and correct job title that fits his responsibilities. Of course, that action is an impossibility when the person completely able to do so is a multi-billion dollar owner and self-named president of a National Football League franchise. I mean, seriously. That guy has no power whatsoever to make that happen.

Lol. A major move coming. You mean status quo with a bigger salary right? Major news would be a new GM. Or at least Stephen losing his seat.

Do you think if a team offered McClay to be their GM he would take it? If so why? If not why?

It's amazing how people still want to run with this narrative that Jerry doesn't really GM the team. There was a video just a couple of years ago of the war room where Garrett and Stephen were interested in a trade offer and as soon as Jerry found out about it he squashed it. They all fell in line with his decision.

People see that and yet still pretend he's just a figurehead.

I don't live in that fantasy land.

You're not a GM unless you are the final decision maker in personnel. Will McClay isn't even 2nd on that list. He's merely the top advisor to the real decision maker and his son.

I guess the final decision makers have finally come around then huh? Look at you showing love to the Jones boys. Homer.

McClay has previously stated he wants to stay in Dallas. Doesn’t want to upset the family dynamic by pulling kids out of school and moving.

Yes. Jerry's the GM.

Jerry is probably just involved in the contracts and staff management and that’s it. Maybe he’ll give his opinion on draft day, but it’s clear he’s not as heavy handed in the management of the team like before.

Dare we dream that the big move is an actual GM title?!

Saying “yes” or “no” does not mean you’re doing GM duties, it’s much more than that. I’m not denying he doesn’t have a final say because it’s obvious he does, but he’s not performing the usual duties a GM does.

Even if he is a micromanager, he is still delegating.

Yes. Jerry's the GM.
So you feel like this teams personnel decisions are similar to the ones in the mid-2000’s?

For me it can’t go both ways. We can’t say Jerry is/was a terrible GM but not acknowledge the almost 180 degree turnaround from the way we did things in the past. No more big trades or multiple draft whiffs. We aren’t perfect now but we are definitely a top 10 talent acquisition team.

So it’s either Jerry got significantly better at his job or someone else has huge influence. I doubt you think Jerry has gotten better, so must be the latter.

If that’s the case then you have to applaud McClay for being able to at least steer Jerry into normal to high quality roster development. Just because McClay doesn’t make the final call doesn’t mean he has no significant importance. I don’t think it’s an all or nothing situation.

He doesn’t do it all alone so he’s not the sole GM. But to act like he hasn’t played a large role in the stabilization of our personnel decisions is disingenuous.

Sounds like you don't have a clue of what a GM's role is.

McClay is basically Jerry's go-fer.

We'll soon see if McClay has been awarded more responsibility, although I tend to doubt it. Jerry isn't likely to pass on his "toy" of the last word to anyone else. I'd like nothing better to see McClay be officially declared the GM but it's been too much to ask for decades now. I'm still relieved to see that he'll be sticking around, though. His talent expertise is a valuable asset to the two clueless ones that comprise our front office.

Serious question:

Is there a GM out there in this league that doesn't have to run the deals he promotes past the owner to get approval.
Does the GM, without agreement from upper management, cut / aquire players?

Seems to me all he doesn't have is the title.
