a big deal is made about florida and california HS talent but Texas is right there.
The QBs.

You won't find many starting QBs from Florida, but they otherwise pack the NFL with talent.
I think Mac ones is the only one from there of the 14 playoff teams.

Brees and Luck are gone now, but they were Texan High Schoolers too.

Drew Brees and Nick Foles played for Westlake, a suburb of my hometown Austin.

Westlake is consistently a top HS in the nation. They won state yet again in 2021.

Playoffpalooza for former Texas HS Quarterbacks this year

Mahomes
Stafford
Murray
Hurts
Tannehill

5 of the starting QBs

:omg:

I wonder if that is some sort of record?

What's a bit funny is that none played at Univ of Texas

Not starting obviously but Colt McCoy will be at least making the trip with Arizona.

Anyone who can stay in the league and have value for more than a decade has had a relatively successful NFL career.
He managed to make a very good living playing a game he loves.

UT would probably have had a 2nd national title under Mack Brown if McCoy had not gotten injured in the Title Game.
Awful luck that day

Just… Right there? I don’t know how it is now, but high school football in Texas was treated like a religion when I was growing up. Texas has always had one of the largest (if not the largest) talent pool in the nation for football players.

California of course has a lot more due to its population; Florida has a fair number due to its climate; Texas is kind of interesting when looking at it that way.

Now as regards it being a religion of course; but once again I was talking about public perception nation wide. Ask a lot of college football fans and not many will realize this. Now that is mostly because Rivals and all the rest and ESPN and so on rave about Florida and California and rarely talk about Texas.

And thus its really shameful how UT has fallen so far. AD and company not getting good enough coaches. Its like with USC and UCLA, no excuse at all for not being top ten programs annually. Except incompetence. And in Florida no reason Florida or Florida St cannot be annual top ten programs.

Here are the number of NFL players by state, top 10
  1. Florida…192
  2. Texas…189
  3. California…168 (huge per capita drop-off….as it is twice size of Florida)
  4. Georgia…124. ..(similar to Florida)
  5. Ohio…70. (Another big gap)
  6. Louisiana…68)…(25th largest state..Best per capita?)
  7. North Carolina…(61)
  8. Pennsylvania…(61)
  9. Alabama…58….(similar to Louisiana)
  10. New Jersey…56

Texas looses too much talent to out of state and the talent gets spread around Texas schools as well and unlike the great state of Florida, cannot get regional help from other states. Top talent from Louisiana are going to go to LSU and the players in the other gulf states aren't going to go that far west for the most part. California to certain extent has the same issues as well.

True
OU and OSU are the worst culprits for stealing Texas talent.
They may as well be Texas universites in that regard…..seemingly entire rosters of Texans…esp OU

On the other hand, the very best states for producing NFL talent on a per capita basis are Louisiana and Alabama. They always keep their best while still swiping from Florida and Texas
