What makes a GM?

Just asking because I really don’t know. Obviously he has to be someone with an eye for talent. What makes someone a good GM candidate?

In the NFL, it is someone w/ an extreme comprehension of the NFL and exactly what it takes to field a super bowl contender, someone who is willing to drop almost everything else and make it their life. They must live and breathe football, watch mountains of tape, and understand how each player's skillset should relate to NFL football. They cannot fall for flash and media crapp and must realize what is important and what is not.

*Team building (which includes matching personalities)
*Not just recognizing player talent, but coaching, scouting and administrative talent.

Take a look around the league. All owners are getting more involved in everything about their teams. All owners are ‘GMs’ whether they want to be or not.

Good stuff.

*Understanding the role of every position. Yes, especially DT and S.
*Being able to see not only weaknesses, but upcoming weaknesses which you must start drafting for a year to three early.
*Honestly assessing all players weaknesses and strengths.
*Seeing past optimism and player love and any other emotion.
*Understanding what injury prone is and how it affects a team.

One underrated aspect is having a good relationship with coaches that’s the knock against Trent Baalke.

A combination talent evaluator and roster builder whose team building philosophy should be in lockstep with the Head Coach to whom he chose for the job.
