The horrible culture of this team can be attributed to the man on the hill. The man in the owner’s box. The man who refuses to stop talking, having a weekly radio show, the man who runs this franchise like a dictatorship or some country under a war time regime.
Jerry Jones is everything that is wrong with this team. He epitomizes the lack of accountability, lack of passion, and lack of hunger on this team. Let’s first start off by comparing this team to other teams that are successful around the league.
First question. Which other owner or GM has a weekly radio show that they get to speak on?
Answer. None. On this same radio show earlier in the year he called out his own players before a big game about how they weren’t running the routes correctly. Real smart move. Jerry has this show for one reason. So, he can hear himself talk and try to convince the rest of the world (after 27 years of futility) that he is a football guy and knows what he is doing. Sorry Jerry. The proof is in the pudding, and if it wasn’t for Jimmy Johnson you wouldn’t have even sniffed 3 Lombardi trophies. Jerry is a narcissist who only cares about 2 things. Money and being relevant. Don’t believe me? The guy fired the coach that was probably on his way to winning 3 straight championships because he wanted to do things “his way”.
The regime of the Jones family goes further than just Jerry. His son Stephen Jones holds a lofty title on the team. Did he earn it? No. The Dallas Cowboys embody everything that is wrong in a business model as well as a football team. Nepotism runs rampant as all of Jerry’s kids have positions on the Dallas Cowboys. I do credit Jerry for being all about family. However, if you want to be all about family. Retire. Don’t decide the first week of free agency is a good time for a family vacation (the Jones family did that as well). It’s a slap in the face to any fan of this team when the owner and his minions don’t even care enough to be in the office for one of the biggest weeks on the NFL’s calendar. Even if you aren’t going to do anything, act least act like you care.
You may wonder why I keep saying regime and comparing Jerry and family to a dictatorship.
Well. Look at it this way. In what football city do you fear your job as a journalist for asking hard hitting questions about the football team in said city? Again. The answer is. Only one. Arlington Texas. Journalist are forced to ask softball questions to the players and coaches because if they don’t, they lose their credentials to the locker room and press conferences. (sound like freedom of speech to you?) In what successful organization are roster calls and playing time being dictated by the owner? What successful franchise allows players to dictate to the coaches? Only in Dallas. In what successful organization is a player allowed to play a position because they want to and not because it benefits the team? La’el Collins should have been moved to left guard as soon as he came back and Steele should have kept his spot that he had earned at right tackle. Zeke should have been forced onto the IR and Pollard should have been starting. Not in Jerry’s world. Jerry needs to have final say on roster choices and playing time.
Jerry has created a country club of rich, spoiled, and entitled players who have no hunger or desire to win, because, well, why would you? You play for the Dallas Cowboys and you’re a star the minute you get drafted. You’re coddled to the point where bad play gets you rewarded, and the coach has no say in discipline of players. When the GM of your team hasn’t put together a team in 27 years to go to an NFC Championship game. Said GM would be fired anywhere else but in Dallas. Players see this. And they know that if ownership and the front office isn’t held accountable why would they be?
Go watch the game on Sunday. A game where everyone could have proven the doubters wrong. They fell flat on their faces. In front of the nation. They were undisciplined, showed no effort, and did not display one iota of fight. That was embarrassing. As a fan of 30 plus years it was disgusting. And the comments after the game from the “leaders” of this team were even worse. Dak at least apologized but Tank? Why are you pointing fingers? Because the owner allows this to happen. Because the owner himself is a finger pointer.
He hires coaches and staff, only to undermine them, and completely go against what they say to then point the finger at everyone else but himself when things go wrong. He hires yes men who will bend to his will while he treats one of the most storied franchises in sports like a personal fantasy football team. His “expertise” over the last 27 years has amounted to 3 playoff wins. 3. Him and his family have turned the Dallas Cowboys into the laughingstock of the nation.
As a fan I feel like a piñata year in year out. I get excited as the year starts, and towards the second half of the season, things start to happen, and I lose confidence. And Jerry does not care. The Cowboys are a license to print money, and until fans stop going to games, and stop buying merchandise, he will keep filling up his yacht and going on family trips. Its never going to happen, and I am too old to change teams. So, I am stuck with him. I can only hope that when his son takes over, he leaves football operations to the football people and worries about signing the checks and working on partnership deals.
Jerry is a dictator plain and simple, and everyone around him is either to scared, or to incompetent to tell him enough is enough. He is so desperate to do it his way that he has wasted the careers of great players to prove himself right. Its a travesty.
Anyways. This all needed to be said and I needed to get this off my chest because next year I am not doing this with this team anymore. I refuse to waste my Sundays. If they don’t care. Neither do I anymore. I refuse to give this team any more of my money, my time, or my energy.
Sincerely a dejected fan of the Dallas Cowboys
