I'm usually not the kind of guy who is quick to jump on the fire wagon, but when you have a team as talented as we have and they're not put in the best position and it's obvious, ya gotta make a change. McCarthy is a seasoned HC that was expected to come in here and make it happen and the very first win or go home game the coaching staff choked throughout the game if not the entire game.

Good, level-headed post. You listened to the interview. My comment about preparation came before I listened to the interview. After I listened, it was just as you described it.

However, I do think penalties is a matter of coaching. I say this because it seemed as if Jimmy Johnson's teams (and Belichick's) were among the least penalized and less turnover prone. How does that happen? Why is it that one team is more prone to penalties than others? That is a factor of teaching and practice.

Unfortunately, we don't have the opportunity to know how or how much teams practice staying on-sides so we don't know exactly how penalties are being addressed at practice. But we make too many penalties. It's not just dumb players. And if it is, maybe those dumb players don't need to be playing. That's an issue of coaching too, i.e., if you're letting players who are consistently making mistakes stay in the line up.

That's why Dee Ford is no longer a Kansas City. Stay on-sides and the Chiefs are looking at playing in their fourth straight Super Bowl.

I do agree. Funny thing I was listening to the NFL radio station the other day and Michael Irvin was on with the usual talking head. Irvin was talking about how Jimmy Johnson would cut players who repeatedly made mistakes. He said Jimmy would never tolerate the lack of discipline by this cowboys team. Although he also said Jimmy had a line. Certain players who were good players he would not cut, like Leon Lett. Irvin talked about the Miami game when Lett touched the blocked kick giving the Dolphins a chance to recover the football and win the game. He said Lett was crying in the locker room because he was sure Jimmy Johnson was going to cut him. Irvin told Lett not to worry. He was not going to get cut because he was too good of a player.

I think today, with the salary CAP ot is really hard to cut most players for making dumb mistakes. Sometimes the consequences are worse for the team. And for a guy like Connor Williams, cutting him when there is no worthy backup would be a very hard thing to do.

2:05 mark. That was his answer to a question about 'what surprised him'. He sounds like a defensive excuse-making buffoon throughout the interview. If you can stomach it, listen -

Mike McCarthy, just stop. Please.

There is no way you can consider this team prepared:

1. The chronic slow starts are a clear indication of a team that is not prepared.
2. San Fran defense knowing exactly what are tendencies are but we are not prepared to take advantage of it.
3. Penalties are a clear sign of a team that is unprepared.
4. San Fran taking advantage of our defensive tendencies like Gregory not holding an edge and Diggs biting on double moves. We are not prepared to adjust.
5. San Fran being allowed to run their preferred offensive schemes (in cuts) and we are not prepared to force them out of it.
6. The amount of trick plays that end up failing like the play after the fake punt, the miscue on the lateral, the insane QB sneak at the end. All signs of poor preparation.
7. If you think Dak looked ready and prepared then I don't know what to say anymore.

"We were clearly prepared..."

So what would the 49ers have done on their first possession had you not been prepared? Scored two touchdowns?

With all the questions McCarthy is getting on his job security you can just imagine the type of pressure he’s going to be under going into next season.

McCarthy is playing with "house money"....after all he is happy to be coaching period, or should I say, standing on the sideline!!!

Have mentioned this before on other threads, but the pregame video of the respective teams in the tunnel told you all you needed to know about where the game was headed. The Niners were hopping around, eager to take the Cowboys' lunch money, while the latter were gazing at their navels. Wish I could find it on YT.

Unprepared, and unquestionably-unmotivated.

Just because youre prepared doesnt mean youre going to win

sometimes you go into a game well prepared and you get your butt handed to you and sometimes you shoot yourself in the foot

the business is competition it happens
Just because you prepared...doesn't mean he's any good at it.

I watched these same things you describe here. Nothing that simple film study of opponent and self scouting of yourself couldn't have fixed in aiding the preparation.

All these examples mentioned point to a clearly unprepared team.

I am just not sure why the head coach would lie to the press.

A real head scratcher on his puzzling behavior being the highly pedigreed past champion that he is.

Slightly concerning.

Just slightly though.

Yeah I have no idea what you guys think he should say

So strange...

Jerry/Stephen can't believe that they're sitting here with all that talent. So I guess that infers they did their job. They supplied the talent.

McCheese claims the team he coaches was totally prepared. So I guess that means he did his job.

So if they were so talented and so well coached/prepared then I'm truly drawing a blank on WHY and HOW they lost?

Extremely puzzling to say the least.

The team was both nervous and clearly prepared. Anger and perhaps even Zuerlein were clearly prepared, while the rest were nervous.

What are the Cowboys going to do about it is my question….

Status quo? Line up and try again? Rookies?

Sorry but your team is going nowhere if that’s your answer.
The answer to your question is nothing...Cowboys print money, winning is secondary...

Two days ago he said he could feel the nerves (angst) int eh locker-room pregame. Now he says they were prepared?

If they were prepared and ready you wouldn't feel that. Which is it?
I think he means they were prepared on an X’s and O’s Viewpoint. Players can be nervous despite knowing what there job is to do on each play and the overall game plan…
