Use a premium pick on an interior DL or even a pass rushing edge player.

The first two picks should be on a DL and an OL. Both are lines are suspect.

Any plan that involves counting on Trysten Hill to improve in Year 4 is a flawed plan. And note, it's not that I don't like Osa or Gallimore. I do. They both can be part of a really good DT rotation but the interior DL lacks a playmaker.

In FA, I'd look for a big run plugger. A guy you know can just sit there and eat up space. We don't have a guy like either.
The only guy worth a premium pick at dt is Jordan Davis and I'm not willing to support drafting him early. But I do think we should sign an actual good player like dj Jones from San Fran at 1 tech

I think we have a pretty strong DL.

Problem is our DL is built to shine when they can pin their ears back and go after the QB.
What?

Why are fans so bad at evaluating the DL? Especially you, Catch. You tend to have a pretty good view on things. We agree a lot. How do you not see it?

On a scale of 1-10, here's our DL starters

DLaw: 6.5
Gregory: 5
Galley: 6.5
Osa: 6
Bohana: 4

Not sure who was starting by end of season, but these guys played a lot and started some.

Where are the game changers on D? What do you mean by pretty strong? We don't dominate decent OL's, why do you think it's OK? I mean, this is some Jerry way of thinking.

Now let's look at 9ers:

Armstead: 9
Bosa: 9
Ebukam: 6.5
DJ Jones: 7
Jordan Willis: 5.5

Subjective, of course. However, what becomes blatantly clear is that their backups and 2nd tier players are the same level as our starters.

IDK......if you think about it, with the exception of stopping the run ( which is huge), this D was about as good we could expect. We lead the league in takeaways, top10 in points allowed. Something getting loss is the offense's inability to convert those turnovers to points, time and time again we settled for FG or no points. I haven't done the math but I am willing to bet it cost us at least two wins. We left a ton of points on the field for sure.......
The O is guilty for sure.

However, you gotta get past the stats. We can't stop teams in the 4th. Our D needs serious upgrades as well.

Why not? A huge playmaking NT is the absolute necessity of any good D. You'd be shocked at the difference it would make.

Every year I am pretty sure you convince yourself they did a nice job in assembling the DL and every year they go out and play mediocre to poor.

You'd think some of you guys would finally figure this out but I guess not. This team needs a talent infusion at DT. It just does.

PS - You do realize that Armstead was largely injured his 2nd and 3rd years, right?
For the life of me I cannot comprehend how fans analyze the DL so badly, and it's year after year after year. Unfortunately, Jerry falls right in line w/ them.

I remember when we had Traffic Cone(Spears) and Speed Bump(Igor) at DE and they did nothing. But people kept claiming they were good. Didn't do any good to point out that other 3-4 DE's were getting 6+ sacks while ours did little more than fill a gap. Really really strange stuff.

Here's a thought. Payne and Allen don't like each other. I'm guessing one has to go. One of those guys would look good on our DL.

This is one of those oft-repeated things in the off-season. One of those things that fans here keep repeating, over and over and over, like we know better than the coaches and front office.

Because it just so happens to be one of those things where we're right and they're wrong. This team needs to stop halfassing the DL, treat it as seriously as they do the OL.

Bring in a really good DT and fix the LG and C spots and you instantly have a better team IMO (assuming we don't hemorrage tons of players in the offseason).

I wonder when Jerry and Stephen will wise up to that reality?

Its challenging to build a great Dline without being in the top of the draft. D lineman also seem to go early.

Doesn't help we went through so many years with Marinellis terrible influence in the draft room.

Our DL is far from strong.

DT play his highly suspect. They have two nice rotational pieces in Gallimore and Osa but no real sure fire stud at DT.

Lawrence is our best player along the DL but he's not elite. The 49ers are trotting out Armstead and Bosa, two dominant defenders.

Ours fans don't remember what a truly strong DL looks like. This certainly isn't one. They excel at nothing.
