I like Payton but no way does Jerry send a first rounder for him. He aint worth it

Yep, not making this another Dak thread, but we are in 'win now'. With very little CAP available to plug holes need all the draft capital we can get and taking it that late 2nd round wont be able to realistically become a starter until 2023 we are left with a team having to trade/cut some of our better/costly players but not able to replace them.

I dont see Jones sticking with McCarthy with Payton potentially available. Even if that availability comes at the cost of draft capital. Dont see Nola turning it down if he is just going to walk anyways. I dont know how much it would take. #24 would probably be the minimum, but I think Jones makes the bold move.

Payton is his best shot at winning it all in his lifetime, and he has a strong relationship with him. Word his Jones back chaneled to see how available he was late 2019, so Im guessing Payton was his first choice. I think he pays the price for him this year

I think it would be the best move JJ could make. Payton is what this team needs.

Gut feeling? I can’t rely on gut feelings, let me see if I can find the janitor or the liquor store clerk

I wish this were happening. But I have a hard time seeing it being real.

Unless we see an exodus of coaches. Then I could it would actually make sense.

But I wouldn't want to lose more than a first. We need new players, just for the fact that half our starters are leaving in free agency

I’m not sure Payton is going to be able to wiggle his way out of NO without destroying his relationship w that city. I don’t see him doing that w all that he’s done there. If there is a way , then maybe but I haven’t been able to think of one.

I think it’s much more likely that he takes a year off and then returns to coach a different team. That will keep his legacy in NO intact. I’ll say the stars align and he will be the next head coach here in 2023. Just my guess.

That's true. He doesn't seem like a burn your bridges guy.

Then again, money talks. And most fans eventually move on to the next problem (especially if their team is compensated)

In my opinion, makes no sense to give draft capital to get Payton to come here. Both he and MM have a similar track records winning just 1 SB with hall of fame QB's. His teams have disappointed more then been successful.

If NO is looking at Payton retiring then a 3rd/4th round pick might sound pretty good.

Just wondering what Payton has done without Brees. Draft picks for coaches just seems insane to me especially when Jerry is in charge of football operations anyway.

If he truly feels MM isn't the guy he should be fired now. Jerry isn't making a move.

I think it is more likely that Payton will take a TV gig for a season and then depending on what happens next season in Dallas with McCarthy would a decision be made on Payton coming to Dallas. Personally I don't see the Cowboys handing over draft picks to get Payton. I think for this team and our cap situation that it is the draft where we will need to hit big since these players come with much less cost than vet players.

Payton is good, no doubt about it.

But he has the same baggage as McCarthy - no NFL coach has ever won a SB with two different teams. Do we really want to give up draft capital, which is the lifeblood of any NFL team, to take the chance we can once again make NFL history? (First team to start 0-2 and win the SB, first team to have the regular season rushing champion and win the SB).

And typically SB winning coaches do so fairly early in their career, and not again - Landry a good example there, as well as Shula and Noll...

I don’t think so. I think Payton either goes to the Saints or takes a year off to recharge but he won’t be cowboys coach. At least now.

This would be yet another stupid move on his part. If he did tell MM not to be involved with the offense, he needs to lift the gag order, that's why you hire an offensive minded head coach who has a SB. We also need to use those draft picks and free agency to upgrade the OL.

what’s one more wasted year after 26?
My only concern would be that we make the playoffs and get a crappy team like Philly and beat them
Now it will be “don’t blow it up, MM is building something “
I’d rather just do what has to be done right now

What has he done in the 1 year that he didn’t have Brees. This is your point? Lolol

1. Highly unlikely one playoff win next season is enough to appease Jerry. But who knows. Maybe you are right.

2. Its not really up to Dallas. It’s up to Payton. How can he wiggle his way out of NO without tarnishing everything he’s built there. He’s a legend. Maybe it’s possible. I just haven’t thought of how to do it.
