:facepalm::facepalm:

Payton still under contract with Saints for 3 more years. No matter if Payton has decided to sit out 2022, when he decides to come back AND IF he decides he wants to go coach for the Cowboys, Saints will want players AND draft picks as compensation. Cowboys can't afford that.

plus he’ll want power and JJ won’t do that

Do you think that Payton wants to come to a team that has an overpaid QB, that is 21M over the cap, that has 21 free agents, and that his best coach is Quinn? I do not think so

if these were the main reasons then yeah he would come..unfortunatley there is a much bigger reason and thats no going away anytime soon.

I think the saints still own him for a year.

another poster made this point in another thread which makes sense that coaching contracts are not “rights” contracts and not part of the NFLPA therefore once the coach is let go by the franchise they are free to sign with anyone

But not if the coach resigns or retires....the franchise would have to forgo the rest of the contract to not have rights till the end. Its not exactly like the NFLPA but it is a pretty straight forward contract, think of it like signing a no compete contract, if you leave you cant do that job for a competitor unitl the contract runs out or i forgo it.

So if this 2019 story is true and Jerry was ready to move on from his son Garrett after at least winning the wild card game, then why wouldn’t Jerry do it now? I think it all comes down to Sean Payton. If he wants to come to Dallas it’s going to happen.
Thats my take away too. It might even be an easier coach situation given Payton lives in Dallas. I do wonder what the agreed upon compensation was

Makes sense, but knowing he's gone they may consider compensation for releasing his rights, or transferring them to Dallas right?

I doubt NFL contracts have non compete contracts that extend even when the contract is terminated
I can’t imagine they are paying him to not coach them
If they’re not paying him, the contract should be null and void

But what if he quits on the contract. No recourse for the owner..

quitting without consent of the employer is different but if he quits and the agreement is to terminate the contract that’s different. If they don’t terminate the contract and want to own his rights I’m guessing he’d want to be paid. Do you think the saints will pay him to not coach them?

How does this make any sense?

Payton has informed the saints that he isn’t going to work next year. Why would they pay him?

I wonder if Payton just needs a month off or a year. I'm not hearing anything definitive, to be honest. Only that he needs time, right now, and doesn't know what he wants yet.

People are always strategic when they're not definitive

Payton taking over Aikman on FOX. Troy's heading to Amazon Thursday Night Football streaming.
You heard it here first.

If JJ wants him he may pay the saints his contract if they agreed to it..
